    Pat Hodges Furth:

The $1 Spot at Target currently has little clay pots with a packet of seeds and dirt. I bought a tomato and a marigold, and sent to one of my soldiers. Not sure if he's tried it yet, but he'd mentioned previously that he liked growing things in his garden at home.

    Gotta love the $1 aisle!

Okay, I'm getting ready to ship the most unusual thing that I have ever had requested before to me at least.  One of our contacts in a combat outpost said that some of the Army men were doing their cooking for their small post, and were having problems with their plastic aprons that they wore in the kitchen and thought some linen aprons would be good.  I have made some butcher-type aprons to send to the Army!

Not really strange, but I never thought  would be sending a Coffe maker to Iraq ;)

Troops have told me they can use the coffee makers to heat water for everything tea, cocoa, instant soup, instant cider, ramon noodles, dried "camper meals" etc.

The oddest request I filled was for horse products and equipment like girths.  This Afghanistan location used horses for transportation.  Since I know horses, I found a tack sale, and shipped off two saddles girths as well as the horse "wormer" that they requested, a horse brush, and dog shampoo.  They were a veterinarian group.

I felt an immediate affinity for a female soldier who lamented the unavailabiliy of size 44DD bras in any PX. So I went on a bra and underwear-shopping spree at Wal-Mart, getting mostly 44DDs. Her thank you letter cracks me up to this day. She said: "Now that's what I call 'supporting the troops'.

Cindy, I almost spit coffee all over my computer just now! TOO funny!!!

Her thank you reminds me of one I got from a soldier in Afghanistan: She said she was so happy to see name brand tampons in the pacakge I sent: "There's nothing like a good tampon on a bad day!"

The oddest request I've ever seen?  Someone asked for a pregnancy test!   HOOHA!

I got a great response from one request.  I saw that the soldier did counted cross stich and was teaching it to others at their base- so the next time I was going to meet with my "stitch and b*&ch" group I asked that they bring anything from their stash that  they didn't need anymore. The whole group got into it, and we ended up having 3 full boxes of supplies.  I  filled in the edges with things like needles, scissors, etc and set the lot.   The contact couldn't believe the amount (and variety) of items that were sent.   (Some of my friends bought a number of "male" themed kits so that it wasn't all "girly" stuff.)

My pen pals normally didn't suggest any items that were beyond basic necessity.  But every now and then you just have to slip something in the box for "sh*ts and grins".

The Fart Machines are always fun, but tend to get someone in trouble.  Self inflating woopie cushions, available in the toy section at Wal-Mart, are much cheaper and just as effective.

By far the strangest item I sent was an inflatable Halloween costume.  It was an adult sized, huge ballerina costume, with elastic at the neck and cuffs, and a battery powered fan that inflated it to the size of (just guessing here) a 300 pound person.  I did it for 1) laughs on their end, and 2) to get some communication back from my contact that wasn't very good at writing.

Unfortunately, I don't know what ever happened to that box.  About the same time I mailed it, the seargent was shipped state-side for emergency (sympathitic) re-assignment.  He and his entire extended family is from the Mississippi gulf coast and everyone lost everything in Katrina.  Fortunately, no one died, he was re-assigned to the area, and FEMA actually helped his family.

One thing that I think I forgot to include was nylons - pairs of pantyhose and knee-highs.  They (two contacts) said that the pantyhose were to help keep warm, and the knee-highs were to help keep the mosquitos at bay?  Seemed strange to me, but I sent them anyway.

Oh Gran!  I think I'm supporting that same COB!  I've been looking everywhere for some "appropriate" aprons.  I had just decided to make them, and now I see you've beaten me to it.  Have you heard from Dennis at all?  Do they need more?

    sorry everyone, I'm off topic!

Woopie cushions...what a great idea!  I can see those Kids just having a BLAST with them.  Oh man, next time my contacts request "entertainment" I know EXACTLY what to send!

I loved reading all of these!!  You all are wonderful!  I have adopted a soldier from Michigan....he's from the western side of the state near beautiful Lake Michigan.  Our family will be going to Lake Michigan over the fourth of July and I plan on filling a ziplock baggie with Lake Michigan sand and maybe a petosky stone we find on the beach to send to him.  Also, there is a wonderful Michigan poet, Gwen Frostic who wrote beautiful books about Michigan's natural beauty...I want to send one along with the beach sand:)  A little love from home to Afghanistan!
