    Veteran's Day

I have always wished a Happy Veteran's Day to those currently serving when I send a card, letter or package this time of year. But I've always wondered if that is appropriate. Is Veteran's Day strictly reserved for those who are retired? I guess protocol isn't that important when mostly what we all want to do is let those who wear (or have worn ) the uniform that we appreciate their service, but I'm just curious as to what is correct.

    Re: Veteran's Day

I had this same question on protocol and could not find a definitive answer anywhere.  I wrote to the Coordinator or the Veterans Day National Committee and received this response:

    “Hi ,

Thanks for your support of our men and women overseas. I can say from experience, that it helps to know that people back home remember and appreciate your sacrifices while on deployment. You’ve posed a good question, one I receive quite often. By definition, a veteran is someone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces. However, on Veterans Day, it is customary to acknowledge and reflect upon those who are currently serving, particularly during this time of war. So, by custom, it is perfectly suitable to send Veterans Day cards to active duty troops overseas.

    Sincerely,

    Matt Bristol

THANK YOU! That is just what I wanted to know, and you have the information on good authority so I'll continue with my good wishes for Veteran's Day to members of our Armed Forces, both active and retired.
