Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan -
Man if anyone can make this happen I know you ladies can!! How exciting a pool!!
Kristen, I don't think it's the KOP tho. I believe Justin and his co. got moved to a new location (still no Hilton by far!) and we're talking about there?
Sharon, i have one contact in D co who I'm not positive went to the same place, but I've sent him an email asking if he can get anymore info for ya too. Asked him about power, dimensions and if maybe even he could email a pic. This fella can't/doesn't always email back, but I gave it a shot. I'll let ya know if he can be of any help.
Hugs all for doing this!! I'm in for a noodle or somethin' : )

Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan -
Hi Shelly,
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Justin made it VERY clear that he does not want ME purchasing a liner or cover (as they're too pricey). But has said if I get someone to go in on it with me, he wouldn't mind. So fellow AS Junkies, I need to collaborate with you on this project. Needless to say this should be done via PM to avoid unwanted eyes seeing/learning things they've no business learning. I think Justin is the greatest, really I do & I love him like he were my own. That being said, my daughter doesn't get to tell me how to spend my hard-earned $$ and neither does he. However, I don't want Justin thinking I'm going into debt to send him things because I know he'd feel bad. Making him feel bad is the absolutely last thing in the world I would ever want to do. So, I ask for your help. I need to find overstock pool equipment stores or discount rate stores that will still provide good equipment. Any pool owners out there that can help with the information I'll be needing. I'm counting on everyone's help....especially in knowledge about pools and advice. Thanks all.
Hugs to all,
Sharon O'Malley (Irish)

Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan -
Hi Sharon, Shelly, Renae, Kristen, Brit and all the KOP gang!!
I have to smile when I think of our hardcore KOP soldiers soaking in a little pool with their floaties and noodles...sipping cool drinks with little umbrellas in them perhaps? Silly! It would be so nice, though for them to have a pool...even a small one... after working in that 100 degree heat. I wonder if they would need some sort of canopy overhead to keep the water from getting too hot? Anyway, I have in the past had really good luck in getting help from on line sources for our soldiers. Maybe try to contact a few, explain the situation and what is needed...who knows, they may be willing to make donations. Sometimes people get really excited to help...they just haven't known how or where to look or how they can make a difference. Who would ever think a pool equipment store could help our soldiers?? Just goes to show that everyone has a part to play! Sharon, do you have any ballpark figure of how much the supplies would cost and what they would need ongoing...ie...chemicals....I wonder if there are restrictions on sending those kinds of chemicals? Please let me know what you find out.....I really like this idea and it's something that would be available for everyone there to benefit from! take care everyone, Laura

Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan
Hello Ladies,
OKAY sooooooo as for the welcome home of the soldiers. I know that the company Michael is NOW with, the FRG is gathering up donations of items and money for the single soldiers. We are wanting to put a few sodas, beer, sandwhich stuff, frozen dinners, snacks, etc in the barracks rooms for the guys to come home too. Something to get them started for a few days. Are fast food options are next to none here on post and off post is only McDonalds which is NOT the same! haha Soo the guys get pretty burnt out pretty quickly of BK, Taco Bell, Anthonys Pizza and Subway!!! Also we are already in the making of the welcome home gear. If any of you would like to send items or donations you can either send them to me or if you PM me I can give you an address to send the items to the FRG leader. We are doing bake sales and all that we can trying to raise enough money ourselves but we have alot of single soldiers and well...like I said before things including craft wise are slim over here. Sooo alot of the stuff we might need for the welcome home posters and things WE want to make here we have to have ordered from either someone back in the states or good ol' WalMart. haha
Anyways, thought I would let you all know that HHC is trying its best to show some support. Since I am no longer with B co I have no clue what their plans are. Sorry
Take care everyone,
Angela

I would like to contribute to the "pool fund". I can't contribute a lot, but I can send $10.00. If you are successful in this project, let me know and I will mail you my contribution.

Hi Sharon,
I don't know if this is a good suggestion or not, but here it is. Have you considered a salt water pool? It helps to soften skin and is friendly to allergy sufferers. Since the water conditions are so bad there, it would probably be better for their skin and they wouldn't have to smell like chlorine. I don't know anything about the pump and filter for this, but I would guess it is different than for chlorine. It would be safer to ship salt than chemicals.

Hi Vicki,
I know absolutely nothing about salt water pools. However, I do know how to search for things on line & I'll use the AS search engine!!!!
Thanks for the suggestion

Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan -
Hi Teresa,
Thank you!! What I'm hoping to do is be able to determine exactly what Justin & the guys need and find it at somewhere, reputable, on line. Then place the order for everything and get an Order No. Then people can send their $ directly to that store and put the order number on their checks. God willing, we'll get enough to pay for & ship it to them before it gets too hot over there!
Thanks so much for being willing to help.
Hugs,

Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan -
Sharon, that's a great idea! You must be doing quite a bit of research-I'm a pool novice myself and wouldn't have a clue where to start. But I would love to help pay in to the order, I'm afraid I don't have much but whatever I can-will you share the information here?

Re: Korengal Outpost, Afghanistan -
Hi Ya'll - Here is my 2 cents worth on the 'Swimming Hole or Cement Pond' just depends what part of the country your from. 1st I would not use a liner. I would paint that rascal!! I did some checking around & Acrylic Pool Paint can be bought for $45 a gal. I figured a 15' x 40' x 4' hole. Based upon those figures it would take 7-8 gals of paint to paint two coats. Approx 5gal 1st coat & 3gal 2nd coat. OK now your thinking who in the world could afford to ship 8 cans of paint weighing 11 pounds each for a total 88 pounds. Put that rascal in your postage calculator ... watch it blow up or drain your bank account one!!! OK here's my answer I have found a paint manufacturer that will ship to a APO/AE for a flat rate of $19.95... yep that's all. And top of that paint is on sale for 25% off. (44.75 x 8 = 358 x 25% off = 268.50 + 19.95 = 288.45 total) btw a liner is around $1000 more is you have to custom make to fit a odd shape/size (non-standard)
OK this paint is meant for pools & is safe to ship (water based), can withstand pool chemicals & has a expected life span of 7-10 yrs depending upon application conditions.(done perfect) OK so lets figure half that 3-5 yrs ... I hope to goodness we are still not in A-Stan then, o well nuther time.
OK idea #2 .... Still paint but not use regular pool paint, use military paint available to soldiers in the field. I'm sure their company has a 'scrounger' & they can find OD green, Tan, Battleship Grey, etc etc in A-Stan. Paint the concrete, let it dray fill with water poof!! Only drawback is that regular Oil-Base Paint (standard Mil issue paint) is not meant for abuse by pool chemicals so life span will be greatly reduced.
............ Anyway I have emailed Irish/Sharon about this option & she is checking with her contact if 'Pool Paint' will work for their needs.
Just something to think about ........
