Hi, My name is Terri and I joined because both of my children joined the military. My son is Navy, stationed in Japan, and my daughter is Army, stationed in Germany. Neither one will be home for Christmas but they are not in Iraq so they are safe. My heart goes out to those with loved ones currently stationed in Iraq...may they all return safe.

    Ok, I'm game. :)

Hi! I'm Jennifer, from Ohio, and I actually just joined last night. :) I'm a grad student working on obtaining a MEd. to teach English and history to grades 4-9. I actually joined for two reasons. First, I just finished a world history course with an amazing military professor and during the final exam, he expressed his wish that we would take some time our during our winter break to acknowledge a soldier, because there are still so many who need support. Second, I'm sort of here as an information gatherer on behalf of myself and my two closest friends - we have decided that the best way to show our support, considering we are all in school and usually broke most of the time, is to write letters. We don't have to establish a rapport or develop penpals, although that would certainly be welcomed, but we all like to talk incessantly anyway, and we thought that it might be a good idea to write chatty letters to people who would need to tune out for a moment once in a while, even if it's just by reading a letter from a stranger. So I'm kind of here, just feeling things out and trying to discern the best way for us to accomplish this goal.

If anyone has any insight or helpful tips, please don't hesitate to offer them - I'm friendly, talk a lot, and have an affection for exclamation points, and welcome advice!

     Awesome!  They will love that!

Hi, I'm new too!  I found anysoldier.com from an article in my newspaper this past week.  I was curious, so here I am.  My step-son is a Marine.  OK so he's not exactly my step-son anymore since his father and I are divorced, but he's a brother to my two boys so he's still family.  He returned to CA from Iraq in November and is in for a visit.  In fact my boys are spending the weekend with him and loving every minute of it.

I asked him today if he had heard of anysoldier.com and he said yes.  He had not signed up but his commander did and they would sort and distribute everything that was sent.

I live in a small town in south Louisiana and am an "older" student at a university near me.  I want my kids to get excited about helping our soldiers.  One of them went for a granola bar this afternoon and the other called out, "That's for the Marines!"  Smile

I asked the director at their school if students could make Valentine's to send and I'm waiting to hear back after the Christmas break.  I hope they say yes!

    Hi Jennifer,

Welcome to you and your friends who are game to write letters.  Many troops who post state that while they love a package, it is the letters that are especially enjoyed.  They want to stay connected and chatty letters are perfect.  Soemtimes it is the only news they get from home.  So write to your hearts content nad some lucky troops will be very thankful at mail call.

Letters are always great and it is hard to write to someone you don't know.. include comics clipped from newspapers, sport team photos, Hollywood star articles.etc. If you are under 30, most of the service personnel would be thrilled to hear from you young ones instead of us middle aged gals who could be their moms or very much older sisters! I am writing and emailing one fine young, healthy and fit sailor and we both are learning about life in general from each other. I do wish I was 25 years young again!!!! Many do have email contact as well so be sure to include that but truthfully, there is nothing like holding a letter. I am sure you could even scrounge up alot of deposit 5 cent soda/beer bottles to fund your efforts if want to send some stuff over. Hey, and it's a good thing for the environment as well!!!! People are willing to help,, how about a used CD collection at your college???? You can ship about 20 cd's over in the flat rate box for $8.95. I bet that if you were to show up at your professor's office with awhole bunch of collected used CD's,to send to the troops, he would give you the $$ to ship them over. It's amazing what happens when you ask...Be leader! You and your friends can and will make a difference!!!!!!!!

Hello,  My name is Matthew and I live in town near Baton Rouge, LA.  This Saturday I participated in the funeral services for fallen soldier SSG Gabel with the Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle group.  My intentions were to "adopt a soldier," when I came across the Anysoldier site. I have since signed up to support a small Army platoon in Iraq that is based at Fort Polk, LA.  This particular platoon returned home from Afghanistan in April and was shipped out to Iraq for a 15 month deployment in November.   I'm happy to be able to help out this particular group of soldiers, and plan on being as loyal to them as they are to all of us back home.

    Hi,

I'm from the UK - is it still OK to join?

I sent a parcel to a UK soldier a few weeks ago full of goodies but wondered if an American soldier would like something a bit different (or do you think they would prefer things that they are familiar with?).

I live in England but was born in Wales. I am married with 3 beautiful sons. I care for other people's children in my home (Child minder).

Would love to hear from others and receive advice as to what to send and also if it's ok to send stuff from the UK.

    Thank you for any replies.
