    Suggestions for Girl Scout Cookies

Girl scout cookies solicitation has begun.   It be great if there were a way to use the obligation people feel  to buy the cookies and send the cookies to the soldiers.   Does anyone have any suggestions or know of a plan or program that has worked in your area?   hb  Brighton, MI

Re: Suggestions for Girl Scout Cookies

I did attempt that last year with my niece's girl scout troop but they already had a committment with another military organization.  As my sister in law explained...customers could donate the $$$ per # of boxes that they wanted to purchase for the troops...but not which kind.  Most of the cookies actually sent to the troops were what the Girl Scout organization chose and what was left after the Troop Sales. This was done on a more corporate area wide venture of sending to the troops  rather than the individual girl scout troops.

Not gospel...but what I was told by my sister-in-law.

I also asked if I could submit a few names of groups that I had been supporting at the time and was told No,

they were already working with an organization - so I left it at that.

GOOD LUCK to trying in your area....It is a GREAT Idea!!!

Re: Suggestions for Girl Scout Cookies

Our local Girl Scouts have been great about cookies for our military.   When they stand outside a store or go door to door soliciting people, if they say No because they don't eat cookies or whatever other reason, they then say, "Well can you buy a box for a soldier?"     Every year I get at least a dozen boxes from them to send over (I buy a bunch myself so they appreciate that too).    They have also been great about giving me cards and letters any time I have asked for them.

We usually get about 40 bucks worth for ourselves(yeah, I'm a sucker for the Samoas), but my kids aren't to keen on the cookies....yes, they ARE kind of weird....so this year the troops are getting them...and if the G.S. ask if I want to donate to a soldier.....well, of course I can do that too....

Hi, my name is Matt, and I'm becoming a "Problem Supporter"(get it???  Ya know, "problem drinker"? Yeah, kind of stupid....and I can say it cause I used to be one....:-)..)

I'm not doing this because it makes me feel better about myself...I'm doing this because every time I hear about troops getting hurt or killed over there, I think, "That could be one of my daughters." And yeah, I'm a dad.

Matt (and family) welcome to the Any Soldier forums and the family.

I just wanted to remind in case anyone new forgets that if you are asked to donate soldiers, reguardless of who asks, you can't give them the addresses you have requested.  You can tell them where to find the addresses and they have to request the addresses themselves.

    Hugs,

Re: Suggestions for Girl Scout Cookies

Any time someone wants to donate, I always ask them to give it to me with the offer that I will pay for the postage.   This way I know exactly what is going and don't have to give out any soldier contact info.   Most people are happy with that.

This also gives me a chance to read every card and letter to make sure nothing is offensive (you'd be surprise what even a kid will ask like "Have you killed anyone yet?").   Those go in the garbage.    I've also received some expired food in a collection box once so I totally check every item before forwarding it on.

Here in the Upstate of South Carolina, the Girl Scout Council is partnering with the Blue Star mothers to send GS cookies to SC troops wherever they are stationed. The scouts sell the cookies and keep them to be shipped to the troops. I think the Blue Star mothers must pay for shipping. Last year the scouts partnered with the National Guard. I get to support the Scouts and the Troops and don't have to worry about the temptation to eat any.

Our local GS Troop is collecting dollars during lunch periods to send cookies to the troops.  Clearly the school is in cooperation, is there a troop in your area that might be willing to do the same? (If they don't already-this is my first year with a kindergartener, so they may have been doing this for years and I just didn't know!)

Gee... I was just happy to find a Girl Scout.  After reading this thread, I queried some of the doctors (I work at a VAMC) and wow - one had a girl scout ready to push cookies. Haven't heard from a soldier yet who met a cookie he or she didn't like.  Made a rapid order on the thin mints for some favored Marines.

For those who know me I own a convenience store and I have bought cases of GS cookies for the past 5 years then I resale them to my customers that can not find a GS. I have a donation box where customers can buy a box and I send it to the troops. Last year I sent 25 cases of donated cookies. I hope to make it 50 this years. This way the GS gets the money and the troops get the goodies. And my customers feel they have done there part in supporting our troops.

Before any ask I do not make anything extra off the cookies LOL

I may not have everything I want but I have everything I need. Family and Friends. Be thankful for what you have because tomorrow you may not have it.

Well, I know a lot of council's work with local food banks and the like.  But my Troop and I brinched out on our own and chose to work thrugh AnySoldier for our donation boxes!  Most councils do a "Gift of Caring" program, where the Girls can also collect donated boxes for whatever the council has decided to participate with.

a_mom I'm with you...hard to find here believe it or not.  I'm hoping the troop that was outside the grocery store last year is there this year, otherwise I will try the GS council in the area.  Got to send some thin mints on request, should be cold enough to send.  Joyce
