Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
Clever idea about wording, need to keep that in mind next time.
I was very fortunate both units received the movies.

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
Valeta, I have the same attitude toward such movies that I do about "girly" or news magazines with "negative" stories...I don't have any problem sending them, but I wouldn't want them to think I'm sending any kind of message. If I had a movie (or a magazine) I was concerned about, I probably wouldn't send on its own, but with several other movies (or magazines).

Hmmm, I hate to say this but I didn't actually watch V for Vendetta myself so I missed the anti-government message. Well, huh. I don't send straight out war movies, I just don't but I wasn't thinking in that direction. So Star Wars is out too? Kidding. Thanks for the input. momof6

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
Lol, Momof6, I think I just overthink stuff. ;) It's a really interesting movie, compelling characters and such. Really, I doubt they'd see it as anything more than a neat summer movie. It is a bit bloody at the end, though. That's a good thought, Free Spirit, sending more than one DVD together with the one I'm hesitant about. I, too, don't want to give any impression I'm trying to pawn off a message. I have some fruity yoga magazines that I'd like to send. I'll send 'em with other mags. ;)

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
I loved Flyboys. I imagine pilots and airplane lovers would especially like this move. I thought it was very romantic.
I seem to remember Marty advising people sending dvds and cds to write on them with a sharpie "property of anysoldier.com" or maybe it was "donated to anysoldier.com" to discourage theft and reselling to our troops. The black market appears to be alive and well and operating in the war zones. VickiV

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
This may be a dumb question but are WW2-themed movies (like with John Wayne) the type of movies they would like? They usually have an overall good message but there are scenes involving warfare that are true-to-life and may not be entertaining to them. Thanks if any knows.

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
No, not a dumb question at all. I've sent many war films actually requested: "12 O'clock High", "Sands of Iwo Jima", "The Desert Fox" - these are all black & white by the way. "Tora-Tora-Tora", "the Dirty Dozen", "Patton", "The Great Escape" and my own copy (sigh) of "Band of Brothers". More than once I've seen requests for John Wayne movies - I wouldn't hesitate, particularly if you see a request. For myself, I don't send horror movies, but history of war stories seem to sit okay.
Without a request, well, you could bundle the Duke along with something else. I sent "The Longest Day" along with "The Wizard of Oz" to a group of snipers, who after attending to gear, etc. on returning from long periods outside the wire enjoyed a veg-out with movie. They said they appreciated the film about the D-day invasion (blk&wht) remarked much on it in fact. Regarding Dorothy? oh yes, they said they watched it: "lots of color" and "you can't imagine the grins, you'd have to be here". (laughter) Try a seach as there are lots of good postings about movies here in the forums.

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
Mom of 6 - as a Mom of 3 teenage boys, thank you for all the movie ideas. This whole thread? is so helpful.
Valeta ~ V for Vendetta was great!. My 17 year old even went with me to watch it! (That was a Big Deal for me!!!) I wouldn't hesitate to send it. It seemed almost fantasy - like (Phantom of the Opera thing going on there). Political story line wouldn't be a problem. My thoughts. I really can see what a deep thinker you are!!!! Love it and use it, even though sometimes it can lead to overthinking...
For a total no-brainer, just comedy - I like the Jacki Chan team ups in the Rush Hour and Shanghai sets of movies. Maybe it's more for women? I am amazed by Jackie Chan's martial arts and think he is just a cutie!
P.S. - I know that somewhere it is recommended to write Any Soldier in permanent marker on both the jacket and the DVD. They were being stolen somehow by locals that would then sell it back to the soldiers. Almost think it was Marty that said that. Will look...

Re: Favorite Movies to Send to Soldiers
My favorite place to find action/comedy movies (which seem to be a real favorite) is at http://www.secondspin.com/ - they sell used DVD's, CD's and Games for PSP, Playstation 2, Xbox, etc at really reasonable prices. Check out their clearance bin and also search by prices from lowest to highest (I've actually found more using this search than the clearance bin). I've gotten great movies for only $2.99 (including 2007 releases!) I've also put "home movies" or "home CDs" on my customs form. I figure they are movies and they were at my home, so thats not technically a fib while still discouraging thieves from profiting by taking away from our soldiers. Who'd want home movies? Big winners for me have been Gladiator, Alien and any of the sequels, 300, Robocop, Resident Evil, We Are Marshall, Wedding Crashers, Reno 911, Johnny Mnemonic... they seem to love action and comedy, although truthfully they don't seem very picky so when I find a good deal I add it to my cart. My guys have said that their cable only has limited channels with 'nothing really to watch' (isn't that the way we are even with 200 channels? lol) and I've read posts where some don't have cable that seems to work at all. I've been looking for a good deal on a television series like Two and a Half Men or CSI... I remember reading an account from a returned soldier who said that on their first deployment a veteran of past deployments said it was important to measure out the time there with something tangible, so every week they would meet in his tent to watch Law & Order, an episode a week going through the season. He said it helped them get through by bringing a little piece of 'normal' into their time there and the weekly tv show got such a big following they had to hold it on two nights. I thought that was such a great idea.
