I know I don't post much, but my family and I have been supporting Any Soldier for almost 2 years now.
K, so I like sending the Troops quilts, the quick kind, rag quilts, Irish Chain, you know, weekend deals. To me it's my way of sending a hug, one they can grab whenever they need it.
Anyway, anyone wanna make an 8 1/2" square, send it to me (I really think you could send it folded in a letter for 41 cents or slightly more), I'll put it all together, all participants can help agree on a recipient, and I will ship it.
It's really more of a fun project than anything else. I'm thinking "throw" but no more than "twin" size.
Of course each quilter will receive a photo of the finished product.
Anyway, just putting it out there. If this takes, I'll totally micro manage it and get every detail worked out for you.

This sounds really fun! But do I have to know how to sew? I can't do much more than a simple stitch, and I don't have a sewing machine...

Aw Jen!!!
How about you cut out a 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 square of fabric and write / paint / color on it with fabric markers? Or sew some buttons to it? Or even a silk flower? Let your imagination go :)
These are the best fabric markers (I don't work for the company :)):

I get them at my Walmart :)

I could do a collage-type square. That would be fun! And wouldn't require sewing skills. How "lumpy" can it be? I have a couple ideas in my head now, so count me in! What's the time-frame for this?

Re: Quilting Bee, anyone?
Well, so far it's just you and me :)
Just remember, it needs to be washable, and I need 15 quilters to make a decent quilt.
Here's a 20 piece of 6 1/2" squares, (I had my son's class make this one) but you get the idea:

Re: Quilting Bee, anyone?
I am willing. As long as you don't have to sew. I can sew buttons on, and sometimes thats a challenge! I have dreams of quilting, but alas that dream has not come to pass! I will go for the marker thing though! Any color you are specifically looking for?
Thanks

Girls, I'm just excited YOU are excited.
Cut out an 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 square of your old sheets, pillow cases, table cloths, placemats, old shirt of your husbands etc....
Leave 1/4 inch blank around the square for me to sew.
And then do decorate as you please! Submit 1 or 2 or 3, we can make many quilts. Any color.
Remember, it does need to be washed, that's all :)

You can count me in for a few blocks... I'll commit to 4. PM me the mailing addy and tell me if you think they'd go all on the same quilt- or on several different ones (don't want to repeat)

Re: Quilting Bee, anyone?
Hi,
Seeing you write about making square out of your husband's old shirts reminded me of a recent funny experience. I visited an Air Force base, and learned that a 1st Sgt in the Air Force is sometimes referred to as a "shirt." Well, my very first anysoldier.com adopted soldier is a 1st Sgt. So I started making him a quilt out of my husband's old shirts, which I had been saving for some time - I thought he would enjoy the joke and the quilt. HOWEVER, after I had started sewing, I learned that in the Army, a 1st Sgt is not referred to as a "shirt." He tells me that they are referred to as "Top."
So, my 1st Sgt in the Army will have a quilt that is partly shirts and partly other fabric! And will love the story when he hears it.
I'm a little overwhelmed right now with work/The Soldiers Project, but I will keep you in mind for a square.
Barbara
