    Something really special

Just after Christmas, I posted a piece about my class and how we sent boxes to 8 units in Iraq, with little goody bags and letters for each soldier with the smaller units, and a few staples and some letters for some bigger units.  Well, 4 of the soldiers wrote my class back, and two of them just about communicate daily, graciously answering questions form my group of middle school exceptional children like, "what's for dinner?" or "did you have clean clothes today?" or "do you have a Valentine?".  One contact, has been especially gracious.  When I taught percent of change, I asked for two pictures, one with all the gear, and one without, and there on the overhead, was Charles gear and no gear, and the kids were glued to my math lesson for the day.  We've read letters, emails, edited letters and emails to send, and figured out just how much each of those goody bags was worth for the customs forms...ok...well more because there were decimals involved and I was being sneaky..(but don't tell them...;) )  We sent poetry we wrote, and I shared poetry that our Marine enjoyed and had sent us from Iraq.  We've enjoyed pictures with Santa Hats....all from my classroom, and they've been able to see what a total difference they have made by using what they had, with a little help from their teacher...and they've become better people.

Well, just when I thought that it totally could not get any better..today rolls around.  Today, I got two emails from "our Marine".  One was for the class, thanking them for the Valentine's package with the 30 goody packages and letters for each Marine in the unit. The other was directed  to one particular student, who had written specifically to him because he loved poetry, and she can write it.  She told him about the losses she has experienced (including the loss of her mother) and about how poetry has helped her to get through it, and she included a poem.  He shared that he too had experienced loss, of several family members, and that her poetry helped him to think of things differently.  She and I talked about the power of her words and thoughts, and she teared up.  He helped her to realize the power in what she said, wrote, thought, and shared with the world. Wow....words cannot describe this....

Then, I got a strange email from him, asking about food allergies, lunch times, and numbers of students.  Well, then I sent one back, about how what he was hinting at, whatever it was, was sweet, but unnecessary...and he told me he had already sent an email to the principal to ask permission to do what he wanted. He told my principal that my class gave some people in his unit the only Christmas or Valentine's Day presents they had (including him), and that everything that we had done had meant alot to him and his guys, and that he wanted to do a little something in return.   My principal told him the "guidelines" we had to have for him to do what he wanted.  The long and the short of it is that next week, he'll be "surprising" my kids with pizza, "delivered from" Iraq, for a special lunch from he and his guys, to let them know how much what they have done, shared, and said, means.

This is one situation where I honestly don't know who gained more from this experience, a group of Marines in the deserts of Iraq, or a group of kids, who don't always fit, and who don't have alot of confidence in themselves, in North Carolina.......I'm kind of thinking its a tie!

Wow, that's such a nice story! I'm so glad that this soldier is doing all that for them. The kids must be so happy. Which grade do you teach?

    Tricia,

Your posting is one of the most moving and powerful ones I have read on this entire forum.  How great that your students connected so much with soldiers and marines who sound like they are wonderfully moved by that connection!  Please post again and let us know how the surprise pizza delivery goes over. How cool!!!

What a wonderful experience!!  Your students are very lucky to have such a special and creative teacher.

You have given them the opportunity to enjoy "hands on"  and experience history in the making.

The caring and compassion of  these two groups (students and servicemembers)  is so heartwarming.

Congratulations to you and your students for making a difference.

    Hi,

This is such a wonderful story!  I think this is the kind of story that the TV stations should share with the country!  It goes to show just how special all of the students and marines(?) are.

Congratulations to you for being such an insightful teacher and great influence on our country's future.

    Re: Something really special

Tricia, that is absolutely Wonderful.  Not only what your students are doing for the soldiers, but that the soldiers get to do something in return.  That, I'm sure, makes them feel really special too.

I have three soldiers still deployed who I am supporting (plus the groups with them).  Two are female.  MSG Debra and SSG Donna.  My male Sgt is presently on patrol in the mountains of Afghanistan because his e-mail is bouncing back and that's what happened last time he was gone for over a month.

Anyway.  Last week - out of the blue - I got a package from SSG Donna in Afghanistan.  In the package was a one of the T-shirts from her group with their logo on it.  The fron has a circle with, "Joint Task Force Paladin - Afghanistan" written in a circle around what looks like a "transformer" or something (not much on these military designs, sorry).  On the back in large letters it says, "OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM - Protect the Innocent - Execute Justine - BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN.  I am so proud of it I have worn it every single day since I got it (yes, I've washed it) Today I wore it to the mall to buy soldier goodies.  It's really cold here in Wisconsin, but I took off my jacket so everyone could see the T-shirt clearly.  I am so unbelievably proud of this T-shirt.  I can't wear it to work because I work part-time at Target and have to wear a plain red T-shirt, but I pinned this T-shirt up on the wall in the break room with a note that I got it from a soldier I support in Afghanistan.  Target has a policy that says NO ONE can solicit funds or advertise charity causes, etc. on the property.  But they let me get away with my t-shirt deal.

To say the least I am very proud to be a part of this organization.  I yammer on and on about it every chance I get.  Today I spent a good deal of my Federal Tax refund for my soldiers and can't wait to get the boxes sent off.  I have enclosed Wisconsin T-shirts for everyone.  (NO bright red ones of course - red being UW colors).  But the guys will get grey T-shirts and the girls with get either grey or pink.  All have WISCONSIN on them.  It's just so darn much fun to send to these people.  They are so grateful for anything and everything.

Thanks Horn Family for providing this for us.

    Ooops

The troops are NOT going to Execute Justine.  I meant to type JUSTICE.  Now every Justine out there will be ducking for cover.  Sorry,
