My Grandmother asked me (back in 95) if I had written any poems for my children (three at that time and I was a single parent). I told her I hadn't and she said... because she knew how much I loved my kids it was surprising that I hadn't. I imeddiately set out to write a poem and chose the baby because I was not yet close to him. The doctor told us RIGHT UP TO the day he was born that the infant was going to be a girl. He came out a "he" and the I went off to Basic and AIT (ADVANCED INDIVIDUAL TRAINNING) for the military. Six months after I got home my THEN wife and I split up. I moved home with my parents, which was when my Grandmother asked me the question. The poem turned out to be my first song that I ever wrote. It looks like this:
SON OF MINE
(chorus) Sonny son son son son of mine
Are you gonna grow up waisting time
Sonny son son son son of mine
(chorus end) Are you gonna grow up drinking wine
You live in a world that moves to fast
What will you do to make yourself last
I'll teach you to talk and how to walk
I'll teach you to run and have some fun
And all about the world today
You'll probably throw it all away
-- Chorus --
I'll teach you about the "A, B, C's"
And all about your "1, 2, 3's"
When you get older you'll learn to fight
And I'll teach you wrong from right
And all about the lord above
And yes I'll give you all my love
-- Chorus --
When your a man you'll probably joke
About old Dad and the things he'd smoke
You'll laugh at the way things used to be
And then one day you'll really see
You'll get a wife and have a son
And see the truth in the things I've done
I know theese things cause I've done them too
Yes I was wild just like you
Son his son I was his son
And I'm ashamed of some things I've done
But he taught me wrong from right
And in the end I learned to fight
-- Chorus --
-- Chorus --
I like to think of it as.... "Cat's in the Cradle.... Part Two". I hope you enjoyed it. Are you all still reading these? Thank you for your tmie and the assistance that you send to us all!!
