Thanks Rosemary for pointing this one out.

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
SPC D Nicole Starr's unit is working on humanitarian efforts to win the hearts and minds of the children and mother's in her area. She has posted quite an extensive list of items that are needed.
Her most recent post is quite a good read and well worth the time to peruse it. She and her unit have also been gracious enough to recognize that their humanitarian efforts and people with needs are not the only people in need and has asked that for the month of September things meant for her group be sent instead to victims of Gustav.
She also posted some interesting comments about children not being allowed to have toys, electronic items and why.

Rosemary - Why didn't you warn us it was going to be a two boxes of kleenex read
Do you think she'd like some nice cards to send back home to her kinfolk?

Hi Ann,
Sending cards for her to keep in touch with family is an excellent idea!

I agree with Ann - SPC Starr's posts need a tissue warning! Thanks for pointing her out, Rosemary.

She has posted quite an extensive list of items that are needed. Like all of those working on Humanitarian missions, SPC Starr is trying to prepare for the winter and gather warm clothes, shoes, blankets, etc for the children she serves (according to her update on 27 Aug). I'm going to send out a message (another message, I should say!) to all of my family and friends asking for donations of gently used winter clothing. I'm just wondering what other people might be sending?

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
Hi Jenifer,
I have a bunch of yarn here I'm going to use up by making hats and/or scarves for the kids.'
I also need to look through my stash and go over her list again. I'm sure I've got some things that will work fine for her. I'll let you know when I get it together.

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
Hi Jenifer - am making some cards for SPC Starr and her Team. Will let you know what else goes with them when I pack it.
I have some stuff here - just not sure what yet. Am going to break out the knitting needles too so wish me luck. May have to switch to crochet hooks.
Have a good one,
Ann

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
My dear Junkie friends --
SPC Nicole Starr posted (9/15/08) one of the most moving and eloquent posts I believe I have EVER read -- here or anywhere.
Please -- you owe it to yourselves to read it. I promise, if you ever wonder if what we do makes any difference -- if it helps in any way at all -- after you read her post, you will NEVER wonder that again.
Thank you, SPC Starr, from the bottom of my heart, for your beautiful words.
Love to all, --Marilyn

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
Rosemary - I found one of those free project sheets at Michael's over the weekend for a hat and scarf pattern - woman's size - but it can easily be adjusted to a children's size. Crochet pattern - they also had lots of yarn on sale - and 50% coupons in Sunday's paper for the yarn that's not on sale. Can't remember which wool it was but there's one good one that's a double skein for 5.50 - good deal with a 50% coupon.
Happy knittting /crochet

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
SGT Robert E. Sinner is one of the contacts we helped support in '05-'06, and is deployed again in Iraq. He posted 9/26 that they would like to get toys for the local children in addition to their other own requests.

Next time you eat breakfast, take time to check out Miguel Lira's post from September 18th. The pictures will tear your heart out.

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
ATTENTION: SGT Robert E. Sinner supporters. He posted today that he had been promoted to SSG, and was moving, so hold off until he can access a new address. I noticed that he had a number of address requests since his first posting of 9/26. I had gotten a package ready to seal Saturday, but stuff got in the way, so it didn't get sealed up yet. I guess there was a reason now.

Re: Hearts and Minds Contacts
CH Brandon S. Harding, USN, Chaplain has 500/10 Marines from HI and is asking for winter shoes and coats for the local Iraqi children. He says the temps get relatively cold 30s-40s and most have only sandals if they have shoes at all.
The Chaplain says "To get them here by mid-December they would need to be shipped prior to Thanksgiving. ...So the sooner they are shipped the more likely they would get here on time."
