    Dog Food

Has anyone shipped canned dog food to the dog handlers?  I had some coupons for some free cans so I got them thinking they would be great to send, but when you read the labels, I am not sure if the brand I got has pork in it or not because some of the ingredients are just labeled as "meat by products."  The words "beef" and "chicken" are also used on the label with no mention of the word "pork."

    Any input would be appreciated.

In my mind I would believe that the 'No-Pork' was referring to human consumption ... ie canned bacon, pork Vienna's, pickled pigs feet, ...etc etc

Now pork being contained in "Dog Food" I don't feel that is what they had in mind.

    IMHO

You might email or call the company that made the dog food.

I'm a devoted label-reader and I don't recall ever seeing pork listed in dog food. But "meat by products" could be anything, so you'd need to check with the company to be absolutely certain.

    Re: Dog Food

Hi : ) How wonderful of you to support a K9 unit!! That's how i got started on anysoldier and I always have at least one Dog I have learned that a lot of the dogs are on restricted diets, and the handlers cant really feed them off diet. Some request you only send toys. My suggestion would be to write to the handler first and find out before you ship it. I can point you to a unit of 8 who will probably write back to you, just pm me if you need that.

Also, if you search, a lot of the units have picked up local "mascots" because there seem to be a lot of strays around. So if you can't find a working dog unit to support with dog food (who of course I'd love to see get the goodies first!!) then there is almost always a contact asking for food for their new friend :)

    Hope that helps!! Shelly

ps The manufacturers website's almost always have the full ingredient lists for the dog foods...

Hey, Tony!  I think the pork restriction is pork in any form - whether for human consumption or not.

OK I felt I should do a lil more investigation to see if the 'Non-Pork' restriction was for dog food as well.  I sent a email to "Oconus" & asked them for guidance about the 'Non-Pork" restriction when it comes to dog food.  Below is the response I received.

    Hi Tony,

No, you should be okay with the dog food.  The Muslims dislike dogs, too, but there isn't a restriction on dog food!

Thanks for your support of our overseas military personnel, and please help spread the word about
    Oconus.com!

    Best Regards,

Well, that's good to know, Tony!  Thanks for doing the research on that.
