    Re: Seabees

Technically they are sailors, because they're in the Navy. Some of them refer to themselves as "Sand Sailors" or "Dirt Sailors". If you do a search of the AnySoldier contacts using the term "Seabee" or the letters "CB" you can see the posts of some of the AnySoldier/AnySailor Seabees.

i have to reply to this post...we are not sailors just because we are in the navy...we dont go on ships, if you had to class up up with someone it would have to be a Marine, i hope i dont make any Marines mad by saying that but its true..a Seabee is a Seabee  we are like no other...but people get us confused all the time...because 70% of the military eather doesnt know what a Seabee is of they dont take the time to read up on us and just go with what they hear...we work hard and we party harder...thanks

Hi -- I have a question about your rate -- BU2(scw) -- what does that mean? and can you tell us what job/s you do? (without breaking OPSEC?)

LOL Hey Mustanglover, oh yeah, stomping grounds...too long ago.  I went to E.O.Green and then Hueneme High and the last year there, they transferred my dad to Adak Alaska, where I graduated.  What a difference, from 100s in my graduating class to 20.  LOL

My dad started out as regular navy on the Kearsarge and then cross trained to the SeaBees about 1969.  I have lived on Kauai, and been to Australia...ah the life of a navy brat.  LOL I keep telling everyone I am a retired navy brat, well...my dad is retired Navy, I am still a brat.

Hey Seabee Sniper, see what you started....LOL Ah the memories.  Thanks for joining us.

Okay took forever to look it up...we should have made a game out of this one.  But in the military acronyms:

BU2 = Builder Second Class (Naval Rating)

    scw = SEABEE Combat Warfare

And this is a pretty cool website with the acronym finder on it.  http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/The_Orderly_Room.htm

Hey! Thanks for starting this thread. My best friend's dad was a Seabee in Vietnam. I didn't know the difference between Navy and CB. Welcome to the forums from Long Island NY!

This is a great thread.  I've learned so much.  Thanks, everyone, for sharing all this great information.  I never really knew what a Seabee was.

To seabee_sniper,  welcome to the forum.  It's always great to get first hand information.  Thanks so much for all that you do.

    Hey Sniper...

CB's during WWII- also known as confused  *astards.... or because of the CB logo on their left sleeve, small sized path- The Marines in Austarlia told the local gals that the path stood for "CONFINED TO BARRACKS" because they had a " social disease"... oh those silly Marines!!!! And if I recall, it is the Seabees who are welcome to stand and sign the Marine Corps Hymn and vice versa but I doubt too many Marines know the words to the Song of the Seabees!!!!

On a serious but humorous note, while making our dad's funeral arrangements, the funeral director said in response to us telling him that Dad was a Seabee on Iwo Jima in 1945,, he asked, Oh, aren't they part of the MARINES?? We laughed and thanked him for the compliment on behalf of our deceased dad...well, dad was attached to the 5th Mar div for the battle of Iwo Jima and it sure was not pretty for him, either! And Dad NEVER called himself a SAILOR,, he was always a Seabee.

And in reply to if you don't have it you make it,,, well there is another line, if you can't make it... you midnight requisition it..And if you are a true Seabee, you always share it with the Marines or SELL it to the ARMY!!

Well that answers my big question!  I was wondering what the heck the Seabees were building in Kuwait. GeekedBig Smile

Oh, and... I guess calling a Seabee a Sailor is kind of like calling a Marine a Soldier... you just don't do it!?!  Tongue TiedSmile

Seabee = easy to get along with.

i like to let people know about us, there is only about 10,000 or less seabees navy wide..last time i checked that is. there are more people on a navy...ship...so we are a small group but we do big things..thanks for reading and any questions you have i will be happy to try to answer.

    Re: Seabees

Today a little more info on Seabees..... thanks for reading

Rhino ferries are not used to keep rhinos from getting wet while crossing water obstacles. They are very useful inventions by the SEABEES that made an irreplaceable contribution to the amphibious landings of Army and Marine forces in World War II. Without them, many of those landings would not have been successful or would have cost much more in lives and lost equipment. Rhino ferries were an outgrowth of the "magic boxes" of steel called pontoons successfully used by the SEABEES to provide a floating steel bridge between cargo ships kept offshore by shallow water and the target beaches where men, vehicles, and supplies must be unloaded quickly, often under heavy enemy fire.

The ferries themselves were deceptively simple. It was only matter of joining a number of the pontoons to form the desired length and width for the floating barge, and then attaching one or more of the specially built outboard propulsion units to the rear of the barge and it was done! But that was the only easy part. The hard part came when it was time to pilot a large slow moving target, totally unprotected, and loaded with critical cargo of men, tanks, artillery, and ammunition, towards the landing beach through the churning waters of a hotly contested combat zone. Many brave SEABEES died or were horribly injured undertaking this hazardous mission. Many more were lost overboard and never seen again.

Without the additional rapid transport of large quantities of vital warfighting equipment to the beachheads, and the ability to provide offshore refueling platforms out of range of enemy fire for the fleets of small craft making several round trips to the beaches, many landings would have failed. In other operations, pontoon barges provided mobile support bases for PT boats, and other river and coastal patrol craft, including even seaplanes used extensively during the war.

And finally, did you know that U.S. Navy SEABEES at the Normandy invasion followed the invading troops far inland? They aided in crossing numerous water obstacles across France and eventually helped ferry Gen. George S. Patton's fast moving Third Army across the Rhine River and onto German soil ! The Rhino ferries never went on Safari, or maybe they did in a way. Certainly the sweep across France into Germany, was as dangerous and exciting an adventure as any African Safari could ever be!
