Re: CSM Jerry R. Callaghan - help Wounded Warriors

I got about 20 T-shirts, our wall mart had 5 to a pack for $10 in white, and I got the boxer's briefs, 3 to a pack for $8.50.  I also got a big bottle of laundry soap concentrate, 10 towels, a bunch of $0.59 empty bottles, and some huge bottles of body wash at Costco, 12 decks of playing cards, and did 100 postcards last night.  Should go in the mail nlt thursday.  I couldn't find any real shorts for less than $10 a pair, and I just can't handle that for a price.  No flip flops up here yet, we still have ice.  oh...and 42 tubes of toothpaste, walmart had for $.59...course, no tooth brushes.  yeesh, this is so hard.  I can't even do one week of what they need, maybe if it was May and we got the extra tax refund.

Sometimes this website makes me want to cry (or I do cry).  One of my friends came over last night to help me paste labels and told me to quit reading the site, or only once a week.  No wonder they call us junkies.

Oh, I know -- believe me, I know. I cry, too -- more than anyone knows.  I've been told to *stay off that website* myself -- HAH! as if I would!  But, please, take some comfort in this -- you are doing a lot to help, Lisa, a whole lot -- and, you are not the only one. You are not alone, and you don't have to do it all yourself.  We junkies are all together in this -- doing whatever we can to help -- and to let our troops know that we care.

    Hugs and love,

Well I said I wanted to help the wounded, so maybe this is the answer I was supposed to be looking for. I am going to find out what I can get first, and then request the address. My supply on hand doesn't contain these items (it is mostly food) BUT in NC yep the flip flops are out.. will flip flops work then?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention..

    Hi.

I sent out a couple boxes today for Callaghan. Just wanted to give you a heads up and tell you that I found shorts at K Mart yesterday. They had the Athletic (?) brand black or navy poly mesh workout type shorts for $7.99 plus 25% off at the register. I plowed through the clearance racks and found the same shorts in navy marked down to $2.99. So, you might want to check out your local K Mart and dig through the clearance rack.

Jenifer, they also had black cotton shorts on the clearance rack too,. I didn't buy any cotton shorts but they were exactly like the mesh ones I bought. Also, a lot of t shirts on sale too for around $3.

I found some flip flops at oldnavy.com.  They were 2 for $5, and you save money on shipping.  I ordered 40 pairs and the shipping was still just $5.

I also found some cheap t-shirts at cheapestees.com, just haven't ordered yet.

Girls, I'm choking back tears just reading THIS thread. LOL Wow, Lisa-that's a LOT! As I was walking through Walmart I was having one those "someone talk me down from this "I can't provide for everyone who needs this' ledge" moments. When the need is so great and desire to help even greater, it's so hard to keep perspective! But you're all right-together we will definitely make a difference! So, my Walmart (in NJ) had $1 flip flops! yay! I tugged on them pretty hard, and the construction should be more than fine for temporary shower shoes. They're white with black swirls-they also have camo, for $2.44, but I opted to buy more funky ones rather than fewer cool ones, but for anyone who's looking, it's a good spot whatever you prefer. Walmart also has 100% poly athletic shorts for $6.98.. it sounds like that might be the best deal so far? I would think poly is fine for being in the hospital, heaven knows it will wash better and won't shrink, and I don't think we're worried about the burn factor... right????? They also had bath towels for $3.50, and Purex for $3.00... I know sales come and go everywhere, but I figured I'd post what I found this week in case it helps.

I found poly Reebok shorts for $4.99 and shower shoes for $2.99, so that's what I'm sending, along with some towels ($2.99). I was pretty lucky on prices today.

Re: CSM Jerry R. Callaghan - help Wounded Warriors

I found a website  www.dollardays.com that sells wholesale. They have flip flops for 0.97 a pair. I wasn't sure how good they would be. So I ordered the men's water sandal, which looks like a generic croc. They were $5.25 a pair. I think I had to order 48 pair. When I did the check out the shipping was going to be $45. But I thought that I had seen something about free shipping. When I looked, it is free shipping through 4/4 with a purchase of at least  $279. So I found a bunch of toothbrushes to bring it up to $279 and then got the shipping free. I'll let you all know the quality of these things when they arrive.

I also found some golfer shorts on sale for $4/pair at Kohl this afternoon. Target has colored t-shirts for $4 also.

Re: CSM Jerry R. Callaghan - help Wounded Warriors

I picked up a bunch of t-shirts today and I got some boxer briefs and regular briefs.. add to the flip flops I had.. BUT it kills me that I cannot find regular cotton shorts. I got what little Target had, but I wanted to ask:

Do you think it is ok to send more of one item than another or do things need to equal? Ex: I might send 10 shirts, (very nice T shirts) and 4 shorts, etc. Or is it better if I send a one to one match of the items? I guess I am concerned about how it might be received, though I am assuming it will go into a "collection" (don't really want to say pile :) ) to distribute out.

     Any advice?

    thanks

    Lynn

Re: CSM Jerry R. Callaghan - help Wounded Warriors

Lynn -- I'm sending mostly t-shirts & hygiene items, because that's what I can lay my hands on the quickest Smile  I think the hospital staff will collect and distribute the items as they are needed.  For example, it's possible that during recovery, because a catheter is needed, that particular wounded warrior wouldn't need shorts right away, but he or she would need t-shirts.

So -- my two cents -- don't stress over sending matching sets -- from what CSM Callaghan said in his post, the need is *desparate* -- so the more of whatever we can send, the better.

Hi.  I wanted to pass on what was mentioned with the Sew Much Comfort program.  Some of the males were begging for the basketball type of shorts.  I don't know if it was for any particular levels of recuperation, but I thought some of you might want to know about it.
