Christian and others interested in wwii subs, , do a google serach about the uss grunion, it is an amazing story  about how the sub which was lost during wwii was located by the 3 sons of the captian of the boat. i hears them speak in the fall in my hometown and it was also a reunion for members families of the crew since all were lost at sea.

    Re: SUBMARINES!

A submariner's favorite is taping. This requires a few sailors to take a guy out and ambush him, then use a roll or two of duct tape to secure him in the oddest of places and positions.

There are so many more. Most of the jokes are pretty vulgar. It's a good thing women aren't allowed to serve on submarines because they would most likely be highly offended, thus putting a damper on the shenanigans.

The guys who work in the engine room have the best stories I've heard about pranks and such.

Taping must be the prefered way to prank...lol!....my son's first deployment they were in tents on cots and the pranksters duct taped one of the crew to his cot were he layed sleeping, and then...carried the cot outside the tent onto the volleyball court....

Oh myyy I heart this thread!  I have always been sooo curious about how it was living/working in a submarine..I will be munching my pretzel, going back to the beginning to read.  Thank you so much.  And oh, happy to see you here.

I checked with Marty prior to this post about sending packages to submariners...we have a contact through the PGR.  Marty said there wasn't anyway to know their port of call.  (correct me if I'm wrong Marty, it's been awhile since I emailed you and I do have senior moments lol).  Cards eventually catch up to him but they have been weeks old.  jz

Christian - I was wondering if there are physical requirement to be a submariner.  With the limited space, is there such a thing as being too tall or too big to work in a submarine?

    Maria-

As far as I know there are no physical requirements for submariners aside from the Navy standard for all sailors.  I've worked with submariners  who were 6'6" and honestly, I have no idea how they put up with the low overheads (in some areas) and 6'X2'X2' boxes we call racks.

    Re: SUBMARINES!

David Robinson was in the Navy.  We visited Annapolis last November and the tour guide told us when they accepted him into the Navy he met the height requirement, but hadn't finished growing yet.  Because he grew even more, the Navy made an exception for his service or something.  Annapolis was really interesting.

That's funny!  My dh grew after he turned 18, and in fact so did I!  I was 5'10" when I graduated HS and in college I grew 2 more inches!  My heart goes out to the tall men sleeping in those 6x2x2 racks!!!! {{{HUGS}}}  My back and my toes ache just thinking about being squished in there!
