Well, the first box of books for the library has been mailed.  They were donated by the staff of the school  where I work. We have also heard from the three websites contacted and they will soon have books headed that way too.  Thanks for all your help.

    Hi!

New here and just reading the posts.  I, too, believe in sending good reading material to the troops...We might improve literacy as a by product as well!  It's reassuring to hear of those who want to read.  If you send me your son's name I'll add him to my list and get a box off to him as well...  If you speak with him, find out if there are any particular requests at this time (and if they need any "mushy romances"...lol...for ladies?).

A message from Cpt Dan:  Thanks to all who have sent books for the library.  Please do not do send any more at this time.

Note from Cpt Dan's Mom:  Dan received 21 boxes of books yesterday!  He literally has no room for any more.  He is waiting for shelves to be built to house the over 50 large boxes of books that he has received so far.  He asked me to convey his thanks and to explain why he can't accept any more books at this time.  My thanks to all of you for your concern and help.  Lynne

    Re: starting a FOB library

Dan has received several more boxes of books and wishes to express his thanks.  He also wanted us to know that some of the books are now out of the boxes as the first book shelves have been built.  They underestimated the number of shelves they were needing, however, so they will have to build a second set.  As fast as the shelves were finished they were filled with books, freeing up floor space and allowing the guys and gals better access to see what was actually available.

Thanks again for all your help with this project!!!Yes

Question...what kind of books has everyone been sending? I've seen requests for specific authors and military books...authors like W.E.B. Griffin and general fiction by Stephen King, John Grisham, and Dean Koontz. I'm assuming they want books, in paperback format, that have been published in the past couple of years. I have lots of books, paperback and hard bound in bins that I could send out. So, what kind of books are you sending?

    Thanks.

My son has asked me to send Star wars books (Legacy of force series) and books by Robert Ludlum. He also liked the Harry Potter books.

Just as a friendly reminder to those sending books, you can save a lot on shipping if you ship either "Bound Printed Matter" or "Media Mail".  For example, a 10-pound box shipped Priority Mail costs from $9.80 - $18.65 (depending upon if you're using a flat-rate box or not), and the cost of Media Mail is $5.38 (based upon Atlanta rates). The heavier/larger the box, the more you can save.  You might think that it will get there faster with Priority Mail, but actually, once it is to the departure point in the U.S. all of it crosses the water the same way.  It might be a little faster to get to the departure point, but it's not significantly different.

P.S.  And if you're guy/gal is looking for lots of books, don't forget "Books for Troops". . . They ship books for free.

    Re: starting a FOB library

Can we actually give the address from our anysoldier.com contact to the gotbooks.com folks?

You may not save a whole lot by shipping via media mail.  The large priority box can hold up to 20lbs and ships for just over $10.  I'm not sure how much one of those filled with books would weigh, but I just filled one that ended up at 10lbs from games and cards with tea and snacks for filler.

The large flat priority box can hold more that 20 lbs when it is shipped to APO/FPO.  That restriction is for non-military flat rate.
