Hello and welcome! You can just go to the WHERE TO SEND page and pick a name or two; there are lots of search options if you want to be specific about branch, location, names, etc... Then just write like you are introducing yourself to a new friend! I think your career field is really interesting, so that is an idea of topics. Pictures are always warmly received! Maybe a few local postcards to show them what your are is like. Then just mail it off (one normal stamp is all that is required unless it weighs over-which I believe is more than one ounce). You are gonna really enjoy this program! Blessings, Sara B.

I am a proud Air Force Mom of a daughter who is about to leave for her second tour in the Middle East. While in Qatar the first time around, she told me about the number of soldiers she served with who never received anything from home...not even the occasional card or letter. I started sending extras along with Gen's box for her to share, and when she returned to her base in the States, I wanted to find a way to continue sending to the troops. In searching the net one day, I found the ANYSOLDIER.COM website, and I was hooked! I started with a drive at work, and in one month, we shipped over 40 boxes overseas. When the drive was over, I continued to pick a soldier every week and send out at least one box to them. Last October, I received a very touching letter from a MSgt. in the AF...the boss of a soldier I had sent a card to, thanking me for my support. We began a correspondence, that started with letters, went on to emails, and continued with 5 and 6 hour phone calls from japan! We finally met in person this past April, and I am very happy to report, that we are planning on being married next June...when my daughter returns from Iraq! My guy is retiring from the Air Force in early 2008, after proudly serving for 24 years. I am so proud of both my daughter and Rob's service to our country, and I will always support the work ANYSOLDIER is doing.

Welcome, Shirley (and everyone else!) -
Since you have a law enforcement background, maybe you could do a search and find someone who is also in law enforcement? I know I've seen soldier postings that mentioned being in law enforcement. Just a suggestion! I've found there's really no magic formula for choosing someone, just go with your instincts and write from your heart.
You'll see it written here on the forums over and over, but it bears repeating: letters are the most treasured thing you can send.
Good luck!

Hi AFMOM! I too am an AF mom...my son was at Qatar, or as I pronounce it guitar..LOL!!.....He was there a couple of times. I kind of found anysoldier the same way you did. My flyboy is home for a while now,he had five deployments and then was assigned flight instructor so will be home,(U.S.), now for awhile. Welcome to the forums and congrats on meeting Rob,who sounds like one special guy! Thank your daughter for all of us and make sure she signs up so we can send her our support.

Hi to another AF mom!! Where is your son stationed right now? Glad he made it home to the U.S. ok, and thank him for all of us too! I am constantly amazed by the courage of our children...I doubt I would've gathered the guts back when I was in my early 20's to do what they are doing now! The amount of dedication both my daughter and Rob have to their jobs and their country, make me so proud of them!
God bless you!

My son is in the very exotic location of Columbus, Mississippi! LOL!!....Not to far from home,I am close to Atlanta. He has another year there and then will re-enlist and get back into his KC-135 tanker...that is the plan I have heard, but you know how those things go. You are right about the couragious and dedicated nature of our sons and daughters these days, My pride overflows for all our military people not matter what their job they serve the country. They can't all be kicking in doors so to speak, but think of all the support personell that serve, from mechanics to cooks to firefighters to medical and computer techs and commications, well the list goes on and on. They are over there in the heat and dust and danger doing their jobs round the clock 24/7 and many going back 2 and three and four times. My husband was in VietNam,AF also, and I was also in the AF but never left the U.S. What field is your daughter in?

Its great to have your son nearby! My daughter is AFOSI and I am extremely proud of her commitment...she has WAY more guts and determination than I EVER did ! Her grandpa (my dad) is a WWII vet and a retired cop...37 years! He was a great inspiration to her, even though he was hoping one of his two grandsons would be the ones going into the service :) She volunteered to go to Iraq and will do so in November...she will have a much more dangerous job this time around, and even though she KNOWS how worried I will be, I will try my best to not show it, but I am definately sending her off with a blessed St. Michael's medal! Rob and I will wait until she returns next May to marry, and I know having him for support will help get me through those 6 months.
My best to you, your husband and your son...thank him for his service! God Bless!

Hi, I'm Patty, from Texas, but live on the road in a trailer, I sell my bead jewelry at festivals all over the eastern US- I am just getting started on sending packages- I was so happy to find a way to show my support of the troops in a tangible way. Thank you anysoldier for giving me the ability to give back to our soldiers. I am now up to packages 16, 17 and 18 going out today. If I had the money, I'd send dozens and dozens every day. I send what my wallet allows and happy to do it. I wish I could just send them all one. Thanks also to all those who send out thru anysoldier, it's nice to know I'M not alone, I get obsessed thinking I need to send all of them something- it IS like an addiction like other posters have said! Gotta get to the post office.......

WELCOME PATTY!
We're glad you're here!
Do you sell your jewelry at bluegrass festivals perhaps?? LOL
And we have another member (roadfollies) who lives in an RV too--you'll feel right at home here!

Hello everyone, Greetings from Bozeman, Montana. I wish my story of finding AnySoldier.com was more interesting, but I wanted to report that I found the site in the May or June issue of the magazine 'RealSimple,' which I got as a gift for something to read when I had my tonsils out. So I checked it out and was SO VERY interested. I am 29, maybe someday soon my boyfriend will ask me to marry him, I work for Montana State University as a copy editor and designer, so it's my unofficial job to fill the packages with letters. Those that have donated to my first packages said they were happy to help, but had a hard time writing. We worked it out--I just wrote more cards! My brother-in-law is in Army reserves and has served in Bosnia and Iraq at Camp Taji/Cook. Since he has a 1 year old and another on the way, I selfishly hope he doesn't have to serve another tour, but we shall see. I love that this website brought to my attention the little things we can do to help. Brother in law did not want us to worry, so never said much about getting mortared weekly and whatnot, he just let us know the okay day-to-day stuff (which I'm sure it helps to focus on). This site makes me so much more passionate about even sending the little things that might make someones day. My dad is retired Air Force (which helped me to choose a contact) and all my uncles were in the service. With Brother in Law home right now, I am happy to send to a few soldiers that need support. I am so proud that we have such brave people that want to be in the US armed service. AND I am so grateful to Brian, Marty and Sue for making this Web site a reality, and finding the means to continue the hosting and upkeep and all the work that goes with it. You are clearly making a great difference in the lives of many...especially thank you for all you do. ps. passed on the site to the postal clerk here--her daughter is getting re-deployed in 2 months and will be looking after about 100 soldiers, so I was so happy to write the Web address on a card and tell her that her daughter should consider using it for anyone that needs some extra love from home. Talk about warm, fuzzy sharing.
Cheers, Sara D. Bozeman, Mont.
