    Question about canned tuna

I searched but can't find a reference to this. How does canned tuna (sardines, other canned seafood) hold up in the heat? I don't see a heat exposure temperature on the label. I like sending tuna with a can opener in my boxes but have steered away from it until its cooler.

    Re: Question about canned tuna

    Hi, Patricia!

I send canned tuna year 'round. The soldiers I support usually ask for tuna in the foil pouches, but recently have been asking for it in cans, as well. Just this week, I shipped off canned tuna, Spam, chicken, roast beef and canned chili (hey, it's what they asked for - LOL), w/a can opener. I also included a small plastic container with assorted spices (Walmart - $4.97) and some hot sauce. Gotta love their imagination...Confused

FYI.  ..  Spam is a pork product and can not be sent to Islamic countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. . . even if they ask for it. Smile  You also have to check the ingredients of  dried sausages as well.

Most spam is made of pork BUT they do make turkey spam and I have sent that when they request spam.

    Re: Question about canned tuna

When i send tuna pouches, i stop by Long John Silvers and tell em what i need and they give me a spork and a packet of tarter sauce to tape to each one :) Sometimes i get all crazy and give em taco bell sauce instead.

    Re: Question about canned tuna

That's a great idea! I've been sending the Gold Seal and SnacknLunch tuna (cans) in Lemon Dill, Peanut Satay, Thai Chili, Mayo/Water Chesnut etc. as well as regular tuna or salmon salad. I've sent them to my friend for years and he'd never reported a problem. (He'd tell me.) I'm inspired by your ideas! I was worried about the little packets, but I see people have sent them without problems, so now I have some thoughts... The cans of flavoured tuna are more common up here (Canada) but I try to get pouches as well, I figure depending on what they are tasked with that day they could use the one that suited.

    Re: Question about canned tuna

    Hey Books,

If you haven't already found it, check out the thread on Themed Care Packages for some incredible ideas, plus, of course, just the threads on food, hygiene, tactical, etc.  I love the themes and particularly love the idea of building each around a book or DVD or finding one of those to support your theme.  Great fun.  Also...just wander through a Dollar Tree Store and things will jump out at you...  Don't forget to take an FRB (Flat Rate Box--APO/FPO) with you to see what fits.  That is the way to get the most bang for your postage buck.  Remember to buy LOTS of zip log baggies and double bag things which could leak (even creams & lotions, not just liquids).  Avoid putting food in with hygiene stuff or it may make a snack taste lke perfume... Be particularly careful with sending mints unless you put them with stuff like writing materals, or books, or other "toys" as mints can sometimes cause things to smell & taste minty.  That could be a problem if sending other edible items.  Read the threads as well as the guidelines Marty put together in "What to Send" tab at top of page.  If you've got Marines or soldiers imbedded at a Marine base (It will say "Unit 123456789) above the APO, you can send free Motomail.  Search here for info on that.  Good luck with everything and have fun.

When I send cans or pouches of tuna or cans of sardines I included a container of jalapeno mustard.  Goes great with them.  Its put out by Woeber's and it comes in a 16 oz plastic bottle and is quite inexpensive.

    Re: Question about canned tuna

I just packed a 12 oz. can of turkey in a box of other canned food for J.D.Willis and included a squeeze bottle of honey mustard to give it some flavor.  That's the best I had in my stash, and thought it would help the taste buds.
