Andrew is in the 1st Infantry, 3rd Brigade.  He has been there for 2 weeks.  He just sent me his address.  What Troop is Chris with?

My son is in the 173rd. Reports are 9 killed and 15 wounded. I don't know of anyone who has gotten word in or out yet, I'm sure they are under a communication blackout. We have spent all day by the phone.

Our prayers to all the soldiers in the Korengal.

    Dianna,

Chis is with 1-26 IN, 3-1 IBCT I am not exactly sure what that means.

I just heard about the soldiers from the 173rd.  It is my understanding that Chris is one of the soldiers that is replacing this group. I am very worried.

So I guess "Dara-I-Pech district of Kunar province" is in Korengal? I really need a good map. Thanks for letting us know about 173rd - I have been reading about the incidents but found no mentions of which COP or units involved.

Anyone know which FOB/COP was involved?

Many prayers for all our Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen... and their families and friends.

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan - July 2008 edition

Kind of but other way around. Korengal is in Dara-I-Pech. The Korengal Valley is just one part of the Pech River Valley area in the Kunar province. Not sure how big the whole area is or how far the guys are likely to travel from base to base. I remember back when the 173rd first got there, they talked about hiking "6 clicks" to the KOP from their outpost. None of the news items have specified this was the 173rd or even Army. Clearly this is the area though so I'm pretty concerned. No word on what base, except that on a map.. the KOP is pretty far south of the village ( i guestimate 6 mi by air) so it's an outpost of some sort... no idea which one yet. It could be any imbedded team, marines, or anyone operating in the area. Seems like communication is blacked out like someone said cause no one is getting emails that I've heard of yet. Just praying and waiting. Families on the forum... my thoughts and prayers are with you right now.

Angela....( 1-26 IN, 3-1 IBCT ) Army address' go small to big. So start at the far right for biggest part and go left to more specific...

The 3-1 IBCT i believe would be the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division of the Army. (A brigade is 2-5,000 soldiers, a Division 10-15,000).

Then there are Battalions and Regiments within the brigade.... 1st Battallion, 26th Infantry Regiment.

There are then companies within the battallion. You probably have more address that says A co or B co, etc. Then platoon, section and finally squads and fire teams of 3 or 4 soldiers.

Think of it as City, County, State. City is Company. County is Battallion. State is Brigade. I live in Missouri is not very specific. The entire Brigade is probably deployed at once. Sometimes not. But then each smaller portion is often located in different areas. I know under the 173rd... The 1/503, 91st Cav, 2/503 and 4/319 are all deployed in Afghanistan but mostly it's the 2/503 in the Korengal area. I am sorry but the 3/1 guys are new to me and I'm not familiar yet with who is where to help out with that. Maybe your son has told you the name of his outpost? Don't post that out on open forum for his own security, but i have some maps and can probably help you with a location if you want to email me....

If you look at this site, there are two videos in the upper left corner.  They show a map where the attacks occurred.  It gives an idea of where in the country it took place.

Just checking in with all you ladies...  you are very lucky to have Shelly here-she has a really thorough understanding of the KOP and all of it's complexities (and is a great person in general :o).  I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about your brave men, and nervously awaiting some sort of news along side you.  I simply cannot believe that the 173rd could be this close to coming home just to suffer this kind of loss. :o(.........  Praying so hard for everyone...

Aw Kristen you're sweet. I'm the lucky one to have gotten to know a couple of our finest and have had a year with them to google it all down as it unfolded. All the new folk will be schooling us pretty soon. I hope it's ok I don't really want to be here right now :( Bet y'all feel the same... Wish none of them were there... Shelly

    Shelly,

Thanks for the lesson in "Army speak".  Both my husband and I were Air Force but this Army "city, country, state... can be so confusing.

I am praying for all those families that have lost their loved ones even though we don't know exactly who they are or where they were.

Sounds like Chris and Andrew can be in the same infantry and brigade.  My prayers go out to those who have lost love ones.  May God be with our troops always.  Please keep the forum posted on all that goes on.  This just came on the news last night.  It was nice to be in formed a head of time.  GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!!!
