Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Thanks Joanne.
I already have Jonathan Kane as a contact, so I'll add those items to his next packages.

Another contact in that same area is SPC Keith Jeter. The reason to request different contacts from the same area is that typically share within thier own squad and sometimes stuff doesn't get around like it should.

Hi Tamra, I know what you mean about head versus heart! Sometimes it helps to step back and take a deep breath and then start breathing again. You are a mom and you have every right to be worried, we all understand. My Uncle Ralph Brown also served under Patton and has actually been written about in a book on Patton. I wish I could remember the title. My dad has a copy in his library, but he has so many war stories in there, I can't find it and he can't remember which one it is. He is my mother's brother. I will have to ask one of my cousins. Maybe our uncles knew each other!! Take care,

One of my dad's brothers also served under Patton. He told a story about Patton yelling at him because his shirt wasn't buttoned. War or no war, they had to look like they were a real Army!

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
How wonderful, all of the amazing stuff being sent!! My little guy was home all week with the croup, so my box of medicines had to be put off till next week, but once I sort through everything I'll let you know how much advil, tums, alavert, etc went to Jonathan and Garrett. And also FYI, I sent 2 50-count bags of plastic spoons/forks/knives and 2 5-packs reusable ziploc bowls/lids and a can opener last week. So at least that's a start and I'm sure they'll go through it fast and need more.

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Hi, I'm new here and I have a question....
My contact Jacob is also at the same place as Jonathan & Garrett. Do you think they share appliances or should I send him stuff separately?

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Hi Kristin, sorry to hear about your little guy. Croup makes them sound so terrible. Hope he is feeling better.
Thank you for continueing to support Garrett. Not sure what is going on with him. Looks like he will be put in the old contacts list. He has never been great about keeping in touch. If he contacts anyone it will be me and that has been far and few in between. I am trying to be patient. I really don't have much choice. He seemed pretty exhausted last I heard. He had alot going on and his job requires him to be on call at a moments notice, plus that whole area is active. Not sure if this and other things are keeping him from communicating or if he is just being a Knucklehead. Probably a Knucklehead! He is really a cool guy though. I am proud of the service he is doing.
I kinda went crazy at Sam's club and the Dollar Tree store. My next packages are for Salinas and his group. I also plan to send several packages to someplace where the soldiers are in more desperate need.
All for now, Donna (mom of PFC Garrett Hall)

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Since there was a discussion of keeping track of what is being sent to Salinas or those in Vegas: I picked up a large variety of spatulas, serving spoons, potato peelers, ladels and so on. Even a couple of manual can openers and bottle openers. It will likely take 3 FRB boxes to fit it all the servingware in. Also some measuring spoons, plastic measuring cup set and large 4C pyrex measuring cup. Most of these items will go to Salinas, but I have enough to send out a box of it someplace else.
From Sam's club I bought several medium plastic bottles of spices. Then I kept seeing more and more things I thought they might like: 208 box of gallon ziploc bags (won't fit in the FRB so might have to go with a larger box), and a bunch of other things. Again to Salinas.
Now I need to get a contact from one of the remote areas that you suggested. I bought some socks, adult bath wipes from Walgreen's, instant coffee, tea, sugar, creamer and snack foods.
A friend bought the GE 20 cup rice cooker, Pam and 10lb bag of long grain rice for the soldiers that was on sale at Walmart. Did someone already buy or send these things to send to Salinas?
I ordered 1 Black and Decker waffle maker / griddle to send to Salinas. It will be sent directly from Amazon.
Now I will have to take a little break from spending I can't think of a better way to spend my eating out and Christmas money though.

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Donna, Since you have all that going to SSG Salinas, I will direct appliances to PFC Kirk Calvert at Vegas. I will simply note in the letter that I am sending it for general use there. I am up to my eyeballs at the moment, but I will try to post something much more definitive in the next 36 hours. Thanks to all!! Bob

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
I think I over did it with all the serving utensils. I will request Kirk Calvert at Vegas and send some of them to him also.

Hi Kristen,
welcome to the forum, and where to learn trivial things about Afghanistan that you never knew
I believe Jacob is with Jonathan, just put a note in to share. Garrett, I am pretty sure is at a different location.
Hope that helps!
Joanne

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Maybe the Air Force can drop off some mail Try shooting at their airdrops! ha!
I sent a big box o fun to Arroyo, magazines and DVDs and such... also a box of canned food and pocket snacks.
Me and CWP (Carol) also ganged up and sent 4 cartons of cigs out there... two to Vegas, one to Arroyo and one on my kitchen table getting ready to go but I think I'll get an address for the other firebase for that one.
Just a quick shout out to Tamra for letting us know about the blackout. I'd a been freaking out about now! Usualy blackouts mean bad things :( So i really really appreciate that. I'm so sorry you have to endure the silence. I'm sure you'll hear something soon and we'll keep your son in our prayers!

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan
Your Welcome Shelly. Thank you for your prayers and support for our soldiers! I do hope the blackout doesn't last very long ...I really would love to hear from Shawn...the sooner the better.
I'm not sure if I told all of you about my son Shawn and his love of music, but for some reason he was unable to bring his guitar with him to Afghanistan. So, I bought one and need to know the fastest and safest way to get it to (Vegas) Afghanistan...anyone know? I would like for it to arrive, at least, by Christmas if not sooner.
Shawn loves....I mean really loves music. He lives for it. The weekend before he left to go to Afghanistan, he was with some friends at the Guadalupe River and his buddy and girlfriend thought it would be cool to have sex in the river and they got arrested. So, Shawn and Shane (another Army buddy...loves music too!) spent the next day trying to find a way to get $300 to bail out their Army buddy. So they had the music equipment with them and they pawned about $2000 worth of guitars, mixers, a mandolin, etc. and got $305 for all of it. They went and bailed their buddy out of jail...needless to say that buddy owes them....HA! So, anyway Shawn lost alot of his equipment & his really expensive guitar. I guess these guys will do just about anything for their buddies. I was really proud of Shawn to give up so much....so much of what he loves for a friend. So, anyway I need to get this guitar to him A.S.A.P. because he's so bored and really needs it.
I hope I haven't told too much...you know how mothers can be when they get talking about their sons.
Well, it's getting late and I have to work tomorrow. Talk to you all soon!
Tamra
