Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
Yes, I know the 1-26 FRG Advisor well. I’ll ask her tonight and will get back to you on that. I do know that they have several strong supporters found through AUSA (http://www.forthoodausa.org/adopted_first_infantry.shtml), and I’m pretty sure they have the Blue Spader Organization (26th Infantry?) supporting them, too. They helped out a bit for their ball, I THINK, and I’m hoping they’re helping out now, too. I will talk with her and get specifics, though. One point I'd like to make, though, our entire BDE works as a team. If we have any excess in one area, and especially see a need w/someone else, we work hard to fill that need. The 1/6 FA is spread throughout, some guys serving in different areas. This is another group we've been looking to help out, share our supplies with. One of our Troops is with the Special Troops Battalion (STB), and we're very close with the 2-2 IN, even though they're "down south". All of the Advisor's wives have been talking, sharing our unit's ideas and resources, looking out for our guys. ;) I'm checking on the hat thing. I THINK the face covers, other supplies need to be black, but I'm waiting for an "official" answer. I'll be the first to admit when I don't know something, but I will sure as heck try to get a good answer when needed. --KLM

Deborah,
They may not be not allowed to wear the face mask if they are a synthetic fabric. The synthetic will melt in an explosion and stick to the skin which causes more injury and risk of infection.

Does anyone know if the silk balaclava's (sp?) are in the same category as synthetic? I can just imagine that they might also melt if burned.

Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
Just an FYI-
Please consider sponsoring the Griffith Family in the Carolina Challenge~They are walking in honor of the wounded members of their son Hank's unit ~the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd ABCT that recently completed a difficult tour in Afghanistan. Donate here http://www.carolinaschallenge.org/
If you are in South Carolina-you can just go to the events (10/22-25) and cheer on the Wounded Warrior heroes! It is an amazing event, bring some flags and banners! Pass out anysoldier cards!
Ft Bragg, Wilmington, Carolinas Beach and Spartanburg are just some of the areas. https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/content/blogcategory/127/1011/ for more info.

Thank you for your responce. I was so busy thinking of them being cold I forgot about the heat from an explosion. I will look for something else.

Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
SAD NOTE:
My thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Sgt. John M Penich, KIA, October 16th in the Korengal Valley. He became a anysoldier contact just two weeks ago. We are sad to know that our letter of thanks for his service did not reach him in time. To all of those who are serving or have a family member serving, THANK YOU!

Marty doesn't have it posted yet but....Sgt Penich was lost yesterday. :-( The DoD report just came out. To
counter sadness with good news....we have about a thousand blank cards
on the way to Korengal. Christmas and other kinds....hopefully that
will help. I'm praying those boxes sprout WINGS and rush there.

Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
I have heard this info, Sgt Penich was a very close friend of my son, they first met at bagram AB. To his family and loved ones, my deepest sorrow, you will all be in my prayers! On a lighter note, rough as it is, my son, pfc R.Dewater, was cited, and the paper work sent in for a comondation ! I am not sure why, but know him it was not anything small !! I am very proud ! scared but proud. Again my deepest sympathy to friends and family of sgt J, Penich May God bless and comfort you. My very best, Bob

Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
Sigh ... just praying...
Deborah, I believe there is at least one supporter that was able to get Sgt Penich an email full of hugz and support if not an actual care package, so he heard a little love from us.
Bob, Soldiersdad, Angela, Tammy, Donna... I'm glad your boys are safe. I'm thinking of them and you.... Shelly

Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
Thank you Shelly. I am glad to think that John might have gotten a care package of love and support from us. That is the power of the supporters on AS. I want to say and do something, but there is nothing to be done. These soldiers are hurting, this family is hurting, we on AS are grieving Sgt John Penich's loss. This is so hard!
Then I read his post - his soldiers are in desperate need of things. How can we make sure they get the things they need. They really have nothing and can't really get anything unless we send it. John was trying to take care of his soldiers - a legacy for him would be that we continue to remember and send stuff to the soldiers in his group. Can we still make sure this is done? I don't know how this works in this situation, but his guys have real needs and he was trying to get those needs met.
Now in old contacts:
05 Oct 2008 To whom it may concern, I am a team leader currently deployed to Afghanistan. I am in an infantry unit that is based out of Texas, but we are from all over the country. Personally I am from Illinois, but the others in my squad represent Florida, Ohio, Idaho, and Nebraska along with a couple other states I don't remember. Our location is very remote, spending most of our time in the mountains. We spend our time patrolling, but also building up position, so construction materials such as nails would be a great help. Of course we all appreciate food items, and it always lifts morale to see a package full of good snacks and food to share with everyone. We do not have a microwave or refrigeration capabilities where we spend most of our time, but we do have a hot plate and some pots and pans. Many of my guys like to have ramen noodles and chef boyardee type food sent over. As far as clothing needs, socks would be top on the list. Unfortunately it is almost impossible for us to get anything not sent to us, so socks go out pretty quick. I have found that socks designed for hiking work the best (ie: fox river). I know this sounds like a lot of stuff to request, but anything at all is deeply appreciated by both myself and my men. Thank you very much.
Sincerely, SGT John M Penich

Re: Korengal Valley ~ July 2008 edition
I think LongIslandGirl has a good idea of who is where out there. Jo, do you know which AS contacts may be same place as Sgt Penich? I'm making an educated guess that contact Steven R Halase is. Donna, what a lovely way for us to pay tribute... thanks for that post. Shelly
