Re: Roll Call - NEW YORK.....NEW YORK
Ah, Anne Marie, New York! Love it! Thanks for sharing. This thread has turned into more than I imagined. I just expected a "list" and instead have been given a glimpse into perople's lives and a tour of our great country. Aren't we blessed indeed to live somewhere where we can do this and also respect our differences because we focus on our sameness and humanity. If only we could teach those warring cultures the joy in doing the same...sigh.
My sister has lived in Escondido not far from Oceanside for many years. BTW, I also thank you for reminding me "...but everything in life is a trade-off." I forget that and fight things because I want it all, and whine, "...but why can't they just...." Sigh. I miss my mother and her good advice so it is nice to find little gems again. Bless you.
And thanks to all who have checked in on Roll Call so far. I've REALLY LOVED it! Looking forward to others...and trying hard not to go back to mine to add details and my own "tour"...LOL

Re: Roll Call - South Carolina
Hey, ya'll,
I live in Clemson, SC which is the home of Clemson University, the land grant university for SC. My father was a professor and my husband is a professor. I live in the same neighborhood I grew up in, so I haven't gotten very far in life. LOL (I did live other places from 1966 to 1980.) My husband is in the Economics Dept and consults for the Pentagon on military manpower issues. I used to work parttime at CU, but the money dried up and now I volunteer a lot. I'm church treasurer, help to put on the "Ministers' Cookoff" to benefit the local women's shelter, and am on the board of the Clemson Child Development Center.
I love to knit and to read. I knit Christmas stockings that the Episcopal Churchwomen sell to raise funds for charities. I also knit children's sweaters for Guidepost magazine's Knit for Kids. And now I'm knitting helmet liners for the troops. And occassionally a baby blanket gets thrown in there.
I have two grown daughters who are currently living together in Brooklyn, NY. So migration goes both ways! The younger one is an actress looking for work and the older one is an artist/designer also looking for work. Keeps the budget a little tight around here.
My Dad served in the Army in both WWII and Korea and then finished his 20 in the Reserves. My brother lives in Maryland and is a Viet Nam vet. My Mom will be 87 next month and lives in an "independent living" apartment at our local retirement community. She was a high school teacher.
I found anysoldier.com in late December and I'm very grateful for it. And the fellowship of the junkies is great, too. Thanks
Mellie

"Maybe I'm missing something here, but isn't this thread a duplication of the one Marty started over a year ago called "introduce yourself"."
I read the original poster's talking points as being different from those in the "introduction" thread. In any case, however, I appreciate any opportunity to learn more about all of you!

I live in Texas but grew up in several different states - no, not a military brat, my dad worked for a big corporation and as he moved up the ladder, he got transferred a lot. I consider New Mexico home, that is where my family is from originally and I spent a lot of summers there with my grandparents.
Just to add another little tangent to this post, I have been noticing how many of my contacts are recent immigrants to America from other countries or are only 2nd generation Americans with their parents having immigrated here. I have 3 contacts currently who are originally from Nicaragua and Colombia and India. I think sometimes they appreciate America more than those of us born here or whose families have been here for generations. They know what it's like elsewhere and how good we have it in America compared to where they came from, and DEFINITELY better than they have it in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Re: Roll Call - NEW YORK.....NEW YORK
Hey Anne Marie,
New York, I have lived in all my life. I grew up in Massapequa Park, worked in New York City for 20 years, the first year down by Battery Park. I worked downtown just as they were finishing up the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, then worked Midtown, a few blocks from Radio City. Let me tell you, never in my lifetime did I think the Twin Towers would be no more. 9/11 was a horrible day, and all the towns on Long Island, have renamed the streets after the people who worked in the Towers who died and lived on those streets, in those towns. We will never forget them or their families.
I now live in Farmingdale. My husband passed away in 95 and my Mom in 96.
Deb, I think this is a great thread you started. This is like the one.......CRS setting in, lol.......To people from Oklahoma and South Carolina, or wherever. I think. We had a lot of great times in that thread. Hope to continue them in this one.
Anne Marie, when you come back up to good old New York, let me know and we can meet. Mineola, is about 20 minutes from me.
And to all a marvelous night, day, whatever.
Mimi

Central Texas (Austin) here. Have also spent time in California. I am currently supporting 2 groups semi-regularly and they are both from Texas; one group mostly from Austin, and another group from Fort Hood. In the past, I've supported a great group of guys from NY, and others from Tennessee. I tend to choose my contacts based on what they need, and how I am best suited to provide ongoing support, however I am starting to feel the pinch of the economy, like many others here...

We are full time motor homers. We were both born in North Dakota. I attended high school in Kansas City. DH and I both went to college in Nebraska, and just stayed for about 40 years. We left Omaha 8 years ago when we started full timing. Our legal address is TX, but we spend summers in Colorado. When summer is over we visit RV parks in Nevada, Arizona, and sometimes southern California. For us, this is a great life style. Only problem is when I start packing AS boxes - they sort of take over our living area. I have been collecting items and cash in our park this summer - we mailed box #30 today. I have found that many (make that most) people want to help but have no idea what to do. But I ramble... Dorothy

Hey there Books!
Before these last several months I had never heard of Deland, FL. My new company, Frontier Communications, has a big operation there in Deland so I'm told. We are glad you are on board. Thanks for taking part in Roll Call. It's interesting to see folks from all over, no?

Hi all,
I've been in Florida almost 20 years now but I still consider Mississippi "home" since my mom and brother are still there. I was born in Oxnard, CA just as my dad was retiring from the Seabees. He was an equipment operator so he worked road construction when he got out and that's why we moved so much when I was little.
Before I started first grade, we moved from California to Weatherford, Texas to Tallassee, Alabama to Finlayson, Minnesota to Tallassee, Alabama (again) to Mandeville and Pearl River, Lousiana to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi before finally ending up in Poplarville, MS! And that's where they stayed, 35 years later!
I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1989 and moved to Florida to teach high school chemistry and physics. That lasted for four years and then I moved into the environmental laboratory arena, where I've been ever since. I now work for Polk County government in the Natural Resources Division. Polk County is in the center of the state, top to bottom and side to side. Bartow, where I live, is 40 miles due east of Tampa.
I've only been on anysoldier since July 4th. I have chosen most of my contacts because they were either:
-
Seabees
-
from Mississippi
-
from Florida
I really haven't established any long term relationships yet to know where they come from originally. I have to say that I love this site and am grateful to have a place to come and hear from others who are supporting our troops.
Oops! Just realized I didn't mentioned that I've been happily married to a Florida boy, who my students set me up with, for almost 18 years now. :) We have 5 lovely cats and 2 hound dogs.

Re: Roll Call - NEW YORK.....NEW YORK
I was born in Chicago, but raised in the suburbs. After highschool I went into the Air Force. I met my husband in Charleston, SC. When he returned from VietNam we moved to the Denver area where he is from. My sons were all born there and we continue to be Bronco Fans and still mourn Elway....We came to live in the Atlanta area when my husband had a job transfer. We enjoy the area and have been here for over 20 years now. I have family in Quincy, Ill, but my husband's family is spread out. He is one of 9 and they are in various cities in Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Texas. I have three sons, one lives in Norman, OK, one is close by in Monroe, Ga and the other is AF in Afghanistan.

Re: Roll Call - NW Missouri
I grew up in rural Missouri about an hour N of Kansas City. I graduated from college and taught 3rd grade and thought I would maybe end up in KC but not leave the state. Wrong! I met my career Army husband through a blind date and he lived in Virginia. From there we were stationed in Germany, Salt Lake City, Virginia again, Wisconsin and when it came time to retire I said "I've followed you all over the world, now please take me back home" We have two sons, both in the Army, one just returned from Iraq and the other will be going soon.

Blue Starx2, you and I are probably fairly close neighbors, only I'm on the KS side of the river. How close are you to St. Joe? Lynne
