Re: Plate carriers and other gear-hand warmers
Lilly:
Another AS forums person justme76 (I think that is right, her real name is Sheila) posted elsewhere on the forums about Thorlo socks with slight irregularities that could be ordered. I got the info from her, they quoted a price of $6.80 a pari for the Cold Weather Mountaineering socks that normally sell for $20 or more dollars a pair.
Hi Lilly,
I did a search for the Thorlo socks and I did see the post by justme76. Did you happen to remember the name of the man that would give us a discount? I will PM and e-mail her for info, also.
Thanks,
Kaylynn

Re: Plate carriers and other gear
Wow !!! The only guys left who may still need these are Rodriguez and Moore (unless someone new has signed up). Great work. If anyone hears back from either of these guys, please let us know.
Clearance on Plate Carriers at Botach - $25 each (shipping for 4 is $42, 10 is $69) http://www.botachtactical.com/bliohaarplca.html Despite my optimism about prospects of saving money by reshipping these, I was not able to fit them in an FRB. It cost 22.35 to ship 8 to me and 19.15 to ship 4 (from TN to APO AE) along with 2 fleece throws and some odds and ends. Depending on your location, it may or may not save much to reship.

Thanks all!
1LT Concho Moore's group is also under Beans and Bullets thread. SSG Carroll is ok on plate carriers now and has been moved to another thread (you should be able to click on his name where underlined)
They can always use replacement bladders for their hydration packs. Both CamelBack and Blackhawk HydraStorm make very good 100oz replacement bladders.
Here's the latest count. Please speak up if I missed anyone or got it wrong.

Re: Plate carriers and other gear-hand warmers
Kaylynn,
I have the e-mails to the contact at the company selling these socks at such a great price but they are on my work computer. I will let you know Monday who the contact at that company is and forward you the e-mail with the price quote in it.
I ordered the socks last Monday and they arrived at my house Thursday. You can't even tell there is anything 'irregular' about them so they are REALLY a great deal. Perfect for the upcoming winter. The people at the company are super-nice to deal with. I told the lady taking my order why I needed so many pair of socks and before I hung up the phone, she thanked me for helping our soldiers. That's always a nice feeling!

Re: Plate carriers and other gear-hand warmers
Anita and anyone else who is interested... Here’s the 411 on the Thorlo socks…I contacted them about more orders, they have plenty of socks available. However, the price per pair of $6.80 was quoted for my order of 50 pairs, that price is not good for smaller orders. If you want to order 50 or more pairs, let me know and I will forward you the e-mail address I used to order. They accept payment by credit card for e-mail orders – Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover. If you want to order fewer than 50 pairs, I will volunteer to collect orders and funds from AS junkies, place the order, and mail to you or direct to your contact, whichever you prefer. If you DO place an order for 50 or more pair, I don’t know if they ship directly to APO addresses but based on the condition of the box when I got my shipment, I would not recommend it. It was not taped shut very securely and one corner flap had torn open where it was very easy to reach in and remove stuff from the box. Nothing was missing in my shipment, it came UPS, but don’t know if it would fare as well in the APO/FPO system, especially in Afghanistan. So if you want to place an order of less than 50 pair through me, please PM or e-mail me. I’ll let you know my mailing address so you can send me a check along with your order. I will need to know number of pairs for each size you want to order - here are the sizes…

I now have enough people ordering Thorlo cold weather mountaineering socks to get in on the discount with a minimum of 50 pair order. Last call for anyone who wants in on this through my placing a group order!!! PM or e-mail me by noon Central time Friday 10/3. See details in other post below this one...
If you want to order 50 or more pair on your own, the contact person is Lisa Hay at Thorlo, contact me for her e-mail address. You can pay by major credit card - Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover

Re: THORLO sock order update
Hey Lilly and all the sock folks!
There seems to be a question regarding the color of the socks...and if they would be useful if they are not army green or some other regulation color.
I have a friend who just came home from Afghanistan two weeks ago, so I went straight to the source and asked his opinion. This is what he said:
Most of the time when you are deployed no one looks at your socks, and most of us that have been around a few years know how to work our pants so that our socks are never visible. The bottom line though, really, is that even if the Soldiers can't wear the socks they can distribute them to folks that do...which REALLY earns them some credibility with the local nationals. It shows support to the people and the cause! I would be willing to bet that the majority of the military guys there will wear the socks...simply because it gets THAT cold there!
"Years ago my mother used to say to me... 'In this world, Elwood, you must be Oh-so-smart, or Oh-so-pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart- I recommend pleasant. You may quote me." James Stewart (from the movie Harvey)

Re: THORLO sock order update
I got the 50 pair of socks ordered yesterday. They are supposed to ship them today. I ordered 45 size large and only 5 x-large. Does anyone have suggestions of who to send them to so we don't all send them to the same groups? Most of the stuff I have sent to Afghanistan lately has been the requested gear from the Korengal guys. Let me know what you think.

Re: THORLO sock order update
Hi, Ruth.
I sent 20 pairs to SSG Kristopher Carroll, 16 pairs to Mathew Healey, both in A-stan. My other 14 pairs went 3 here, 2 there to soldiers whose addresses I did not get through AS, they are relatives of friends and co-workers, also all in A-stan.
I ordered 75 pairs Monday on behalf of 7 other AS supporters, maybe they will check in here with who they are sending them to. I know one of them is sending hers to a former AS contact of hers who is redeploying soon.
I think the guys who really need these socks are the ones out in the boonies! Korengal is an excellent choice. Any of the guys who requested the plate carriers can also use these socks.

Old Nurse Ruth:
Here's a suggestion where to send those socks: SSG Trevor Long. He's got 9 guys and they go around building FOBs in the most obscure places in Afghanistan. The photos in his posting are breathing taking, they are so high up in the mts. Anyway, he specially asked for socks saying some of the guys can't afford them.

Wow !!! Unless someone hears anything to the contrary, I have to assume that our guys are ok on plate carriers. Great work. If anyone hears that these are still needed by anyone, please let us know. I do not have contact with everyone here. I have cleared off the counts on plate carriers to make it easier to track other stuff.
