On Friday, Oct. 10, I stopped at the Hy-Vee
in Lincoln Center to pick up some pastries. As I was looking over the
tasty treats, I heard a voice from behind the counter say, "Sir, I
would like to shake your hand."
I looked up to see the lady
reach over the counter and extend her hand to me. I shook her hand and
she said, "Thank you for serving our country, sir."
It took
me a second to register what had just happened. Then, I realized that
she had noticed the patch on my hat that said "Submarine Service
Veteran." For a moment, I was speechless. Here was a complete stranger
who almost brought me to my knees with a few heartfelt words.
I thanked her, told her how sweet she was and that I was truly honored
by her comments. We spoke for a few minutes about all the sacrifices
that our military men and women and their families face on a daily
basis. I thanked her again and went on my way.
A few minutes
later, I called Hy-Vee and spoke to Tom Freeman, the bakery manager. I
told Tom what had transpired earlier and to find out whom this nice
lady was. That was the first time anyone has said that to me, but we
all, including myself, need to say it more. So thank you veterans and
those currently serving and thank you, Joyce Reynolds, for your kind
words to a total stranger.
