Hi! From what some of the Soldiers reported to their wives, they aren't allowed to buy the tobacco over there, the cheap stuff, for that reason. It may be "poisoned". Interpret that as you may. I've never asked for the official reason, just heard there was a high demand because of the restrictions. I think the guys were getting cheap cigs made in Pakistan, but again that's just what I heard from the spouses. My guess is cigarettes HERE are considered to be harmful. I can't imagine that the regulations in Afghanistan or Pakistan are any better as far as pesticides on the tobacco, or worse.

Yes, we did hear that two soldiers were found unconscious and that they suspect it was from dip bought from Afghan locals.  I have heard that it was arsenic.  There was a notice sent to all that they could no longer buy locally.  That is really tough on the guys.

    Re: 6-4 CAV Soldiers, Afghanistan

We can start a list of specific cigs and dips requested.  I'm guessing they probably all have someone in their group that wants some.  Here are the ones that I know have helped out by listing brand preference:

Barrett   -  Marlboro, Camel filters and Skoal  (He is a contact, but not on this list, we might want to add him, because his group of 30 are doing some very important work up in the A'stan mountains.  Withdrawals had a definite impact on morale for his group and had become a real issue.)

Brewer  -  Marlboro Lights  (There are only 2 smokers  out of 5, with a LOT of # of requests, they are probably well covered)

Moore   -   Copenhagen and other tobacco products

Moss - Skoal/COPE - any flavors, Marlboros in box  (note: he was given a 50 day notice on 12 Nov)

Strickland - cigs and dip - not specific about brand, but has requested on last post

     Also:

Johnson, 1SG Howard T. - Updated yesterday 14 Nov - asking for large and water resistant tarps (i.e from Walmart) - said the snow has stopped construction and they could not put on the A roof.  The flat roof will leak...

Thank you 6-4 Mom - will add to the list!  Wink

I sent 15 Petzl headlamps a while ago (17 Oct)  to them, and Ruth sent 15.  Also sent Army boot socks, Army t-shirts and cold weather boot socks, lots of hygiene and Halloween candy, along with other misc. stuff. (incl. tobacco products).

    Kaylynn,

I will go to Walmart tonight or tomorrow and get 1st Sgt Johnson some tarps.  I have to work late Monday but will try to make it to the post office Tuesday.

He has had only 9 address requests since Sept :(

cwmom98 ~ There are a few things you need to keep in mind (and not in any particular order)

Over time "someone" within each military branch has determined what a Soldier, Marine, Airman, Coastie or Sailor needs for deployment.  I certainly have my opinions about that but - they are just that - my opinions.  I have asked the question over and over in the past about "why?" and I have generally gotten the same answer(s) which will be covered in all of the points I am writing.

Deployments to different places within Iraq or within Afghanistan require different "needs".  I guess the military (all branches) hasn't really found the absolute key to all of those needs yet.  So there is a generic list of what is issued by each military branch regardless of where the deployment will be.  Granted, they do take into account weather situations, etc.  One thing you might want to consider about the Soldiers in NE Afghanistan is that this is "relatively" new terrain.  There's a learning curve.  Each Commander DOES meet with (in theatre) and talk with the Commander they are replacing about a myriad of issues - the most important of which are the battle and logistical issues.  Please keep in mind that the 6-4 (and probably others but I know more specifically about them) are building NEW OPs, etc. from, literally, the ground up.

Also keep in mind budgets constraints.  Yep...confounding as it may sound the military has budgets as to what they can spend on gear and everything else.

Many times a Soldier will see a piece of gear that a buddy of his has that was not government issue.  Most of the time it's an item they "like" to have and, quite honestly, may make their job easier.  Does that mean it's "essential"?  Not really.  For example, I know a lot of people supporting the 1-26, 6-4, etc went to a great deal of expense and trouble to get plate carriers to a large number of Soldiers who preferred those over their IBA.  Does that mean the Army SHOULD have issued the plate carriers.  In my opinion, no.  I've spoken with over 100 of the 173rd, 2-503 Soldiers who just returned for the same AO.  Less than 10% of them preferred or used plate carriers.  The remainder preferred the IBA for various reasons.  So, again, in my opinion if the Army issues IBA and doesn't give the "option" of plate carriers that doesn't mean they are under supplying the Soldiers.

Don't get me wrong - there are times when I just sit here and scratch my head reading some of the "basic" requests.  Nothing we can do about it EXCEPT call and/or write Congress.  And with the new adminstration coming it TRUST ME - it's just going to get worse when they start cutting the Defense Budget.  Might as well buckle your seatbelt for that one.

Also keep in mind - when you start making those calls and demanding "why?" that you must make yourself crystal clear about the specific items.  The Commanders (ALL OF THEM) in Afghanistan right now have their hands FULL.  Understaffed, under supplied, etc.  I would ask you to be careful so as not to make whomever you are complaining to think that any specific Commander isn't taking care of his men.  That's just NOT the case.  Way too many in Congress and civilians throughout the nation would love ANY reason to make this more difficult than it already is for all of those who are deployed.

I guess at the end of the day it's up to each of us to determine what we can do, want to do and will do.  Just because you read a "request" doesn't mean it's an essential need.  How many requests have you read for Xbox and other electronic games?  Are those essential?  Nah.  Are they a good thing for the Soldiers to have to take their minds off of what they are in day and night?  Absolutely.

To me support is about more than buying and sending "things".  It's about protecting our beloved deployed personnel from all of those who would love to see them fail.

    I hope this helps.

Just one thing I want to point out:

The Marine Corps has indeed found that the plate carriers are needed and has contracted with Eagle Industries.  The Corps is and will be issuing them to their Marines in the mountains of Afghanistan. Yes

    Re: 6-4 CAV Soldiers, Afghanistan

[Posted this on Korengal earlier, so figured I should post here.]

    Hello to everyone,

Needed or desired - I'm not big on semantics.  Let's hope noone gets "talked to" this time.  This should be a SAFE HAVEN for our soldiers' requests.  Anything that makes our soldiers' lives safer is a "need" to me.  Maybe not to others.  It may be things to help improve a soldier's health, strength, and morale.  It may be gear to make the soldiers more agile or less fatigued.  Items to help them fight faster and more efficiently in the heat of battle.  Things that improve their ability to function in different terrain and with less room for error.

OPSEC controls - yes, but not censorship Zip it! in order to save face...  for anyone or any organization.

This type of information is always posted on The Gear Guys & Gals thread.  Anything that can help out any of our men in combat.  That is, as long as someone sees a post and shares that on the thread.  It does not matter where the contact is from, it is still helpful to gather it all in one spot.  We are all able to help each other out with online vendors, best prices and percent off codes.  Why reinvent the wheel?

    My thoughts,

    Kaylynn

    Re: 6-4 CAV Soldiers, Afghanistan

I read everything you wrote & took it to heart.  At the end,  you stated "I hope this helps."  It did.  Message received.  As you will notice, I deleted my post.  The very LAST thing I wanted to do was upset anyone, & upon re-reading what I wrote, I can see that some of the family members & fellow volunteers COULD have been upset by what I wrote.  I'm afraid I let my passion get the better of me & I tend to shoot from the hip.  Sometimes that's a good thing, but then there are times like this where maybe not so much.  So I thank you & Kaylynn & Donna for putting things into a better perspective.  My heart truly is in the right place but I will be the first to appologize when I realize I am out of line.  This would be one of those such occassions.

    Big Hugs!
    Ann

No worries and no apology required.  I think we all have those "days" when opening the door and screaming doesn't even seem to help.  LOL!  Hang in there.  No doubt your heart is in the right place and all you do is well received and appreciated.

    Oh, my dear Ann ~

You heart is BIG and filled with LOVE!!!   You are an awesome supporter of our Soldiers!  Your presence here is motivating and inspiring.

My apologies if my private "venting" to you, may have spurred you on to your honest and open words.  Shooting from the hip?  You must have learned that in your previous career, where that skill can be lifesaving!  Wink

    No apologies needed, sweetie,

    Kaylynn

Now, can you make some phone calls and get these wildfires out?  They're getting closer...  Angry
