    Re: 6-4 CAV Soldiers, Afghanistan

    6/4 junkie sighting Big Smile

So i was at the post office today mailing off a box to one of my Korengal Valley contacts. And i evesdropped a wee bit on the lady in front of me in line since she had flat rates and customs forms. 6/4 Cav!! Ha, small world huh. So i didn't get to talk to her to find out if it's an AS junkie because my number got called but I got to chat with her husband who said it was adopted troops! He was a neat guy, Vietnam vet and a family full of military. Even a daughter Marine flying the big planes!! I was almost sorry my turn was up in line if u can imagine that! Wish id had a chance to meet her too and thank them for the whole family's service. They were sending off many a box to the 6/4 too! Love it Big Smile

Hope y'all are having a great Holiday season! Shelly

    Re: 6-4 CAV Soldiers, Afghanistan

(copied from Korengal thread but pertinent here too)

Well, today I got my 15 minutes of fame by way of a newspaper article written about me & our boys in our local paper.  Here's the link:

    http://www.winchesterstar.com/showarticle_new.php?sID=6&foldername=20081209&file=Woman%20makes_article.html

A few "facts" are incorrect...for instance, I've only got 5 medics in one of my groups, from the 6/4, & I raised $69 not $59 at the fundraiser.  But overall I'd say the reporter, Kristen Coyne, did a very nice job.  Hopefully, now that it's out there for the whole community to see, maybe they'll get off their collective butts & start being more generous.  I won't hold my breath, but I can HOPE, can't I?  LOL  I still have a bunch more boxes to go out, many of them Xmas stuff.  The guys won't get them till well after the Holidays, but then in MHO, they should have Xmas everyday that they have to be there!!  So I don't think they'll mind, do you?

I haven't heard from Rolling Thunder yet, but I expect to soon.  I had to miss their meeting which was held this past Sunday.  Stupid mouth of mine!!  I had a tooth pulled earlier in the week & all was fine until Friday night, when I managed to obtain a nasty case of dry socket.  Talk about painful!!  I've been misserable ever since.  Saw the doc today though & he worked some kind of magic & sent me home with some REALLY GOOD happy pills, so hopefully I'll get some rest tonight.  But because of all this, I had to miss  the meeting, as I said.  As soon as I know something, I'll let ya'll know.

Well, I'm gonna go gag down some of this V-8 soup...haven't tried it before...it's....interesting?  But I need the nourishment.  Hope ya'll are having fun prepping for the holidays.  I don't even have my tree up yet...think it's gonna be a scaled down version of what usually goes up this year.  Anyway, toodles till later.

     Hugs to all!

    Ann

    Big Hugs!

Nice article.  It is good to get the word out.    I have no idea how long it is taking since the snow has come but whenever these guys get the boxes it will be Christmas!

I am just a mom but I was able to collect some money during our church bazaar and sent off four packages last week.  I was able to send among other things, 6 pounds of dried cheese tortillini and all the fixings so the guys could have a good meal that was not a MRE.  lol

I also sent lots of granola bars, cheese and peanut butter crackers, spices, and chocolate bars.

Way cool Shelly!  Always nice to meet others we can 'talk' to and be understood huh?   Our town is small and the clerks know mej.  A man was in the othe day and was feeling bad because he had been sending packages to someone that was coming home and he wanted to keep sending but didn't know how to get another name.  Don't know how he got the first one.  So the clerks said I know a woman that can help you out!! So when I came in again they told me and I gave them a card they could give him to contact me, the two women clerks both asked if I would get them some names too.    Needless to say I was happy to oblige with AS cards, list of suggested items, etc.   3 more junkies in the making I think!    I gave them names of some of our guys, they will sign on to get the addresses.

Here is an article on the 6-4 from Fort Hood.  Thought you all might like to read it.

Yes, the guys did REALLY well in a very tough situation. Here's the last line of the article (not sure why it wasn't on that page):

"I was proud of the way my Troopers fought that day," Markert said. "They demonstrated the aggressiveness and quick thinking expected in Cavalry units."

    http://www.army.mil/-news/2008/12/08/14872-servicemembers-prove-themselves-in-ambush/

These guys have an extremely difficult mission, but they are doing very well with it. From the Troop Commanders down to the newest Private, they are the kind of Soldiers that make me proud of our Army today. They are well trained, and working well as a unit.

The mission is rough, though. I've always believed while their tactical part of their lives is critical, taking care of their morale is equally important. Every single card, hand written note, up to the cases of socks that are sent are very important to these guys. THANK YOU for continuing to send them. ;)

    Re: 6-4 CAV Soldiers, Afghanistan

Hey y'all, copying Deb's post from the KOP thread... there's 6/4 pix in there :)

    empressfrancis:

If any of you would like to take the time to look through a lot of photos taken in Afghanistan, there are 365 here:

    http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Afghanistan/ss/events/wl/08072001afghanistan/im:/081223/480/062a536f3e8e4132b0635cf46e3f023b/#photoViewer=/081228/ids_photos_wl/r1469466580.jpg

There are MANY taken over Christmas and you might be able to see your soldier.  Keep in mind there are also photos of Allied troops, political photos, photos of injured civilians, street life, soldiers on patrol, etc., but also many during Christmas Eve services and Christmas dinners.

Good luck in finding that special someone.  May the New Year keep them ALL safe until they return home.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

    Debbie

Thanks Deb! The 6/4 cav guys are in 61,62, 81,82, 106, 113, 114 and 124. The Beans & Bullets guys in 209! No Korengal that was labled anyway. Great pix!!

Thanks for the pics.  I didn't see my son but it was good to see some of the other soldiers having some down time at Christmas.  Looking at pictures of our troops is like being able to have a connection with them all.  I just want to be able to reach out and hold them all.

May you all have a blessed and hopefully, peace filled, New Year!

I'm so glad you heard from your son!  And that they are finally getting some of their mail.  I was hoping extra efforts would be made to get it up the mtn in time, I think they are pretty good about holidays and trying to make them special for the guys.

Did he mention if they were now overloaded, I understand that is the case for some of them, and no storage room.  Guess they will have to eat fast!  LOL

Yeah, he did say they were very short on space.  I asked him if he needed anything but all he says he needs are smokes.  LOL  He did say ramin noodles are always welcome but that they simply don't have any space.  His birthday is coming up so I guess smokes it will be.  Says he plans on quiting when he comes home.Big SmileBig SmileCake

I am mailing to Metcalfe today a space heater, some socks and the thing to cover your head with to stay warm, hot chocolate and a bunch of movies.  I hope it doesn't take too long to get there, I think they really need the heater.

Many of the locations are running off generators which probably can't support electric space heaters. Keep this in mind before buying and sending too many more of these to the Soldiers.

Other cold weather gear is always appreciated.
