    Mail Delivery Days

Anyone read about the Postmaster General asking Congress to allow the PO to consider possibly cutting mail delivery from 6 to 5 days a week? What kind of mail?  (Read it on yahoo news but was unable to post the link - sorry - Wed Jan 28 )

And is anyone aware of the ramifications that might ensue for mailing to the Troops?

Would PO s still be open 6 days? Would mail still be on the move in the system, etc?

    Re: Mail Delivery Days

i just read it. this is pure assumption on my part, but what i read into it was that they wanted to not deliver the mail on the lowest volume days.  So I will guess that whatever that day is, there will be no delivery. That would save them money on salaries and gas and all that from route drivers.  I would hope that mail will still be moving through the system, though.

I guess we will have to see. In Canada-where my inlaws are anyway-do not have mail delivery on Saturday. They have a post office in town, and it is closed up tight. They don't have a lot of stand alone post offices, they have them in drug stores. They did it in the 80's because they couldn't keep the post offices open. They privatized the mail there. (info from my hubby and "they" are Canada in general-with apologies to our Canadian friends to lump them all up in the post office discussion!)Stick out tongue

    Re: Mail Delivery Days

Once our care packages to the Troops hit the APO/FPO systems, they are in the hands of the military and are not affected by changes in the US Postal System.  My understanding is that the APO/FPO delivers every day of the year in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Not all POs are open on Saturdays now and the one near me is only open 3 hours on Saturday.  It seems the USPS is pushing postal stations in stores which seem to be contracted with the store owner.  The one time I tried using this, I knew more about mailing the package than the person in the store AND I had to wait while he finished ringing up a sale until he could come over to the postal station in the corner of his store.

    Re: Mail Delivery Days

What I heard on the tv news is that it will just be the mail delivery that will be cut one day a week.  They said that Tues. was the slowest mail day because mail was usually not sent out on Sat. or Sun.  That makes sense because unless they take a Monday holiday, Tues. is the day we get our regular weekly advertisements and if they don't deliver on Monday, we get them on Wed.  There are so many Mon. holidays now that we get several weeks a year with 5 day delivery as it is.  I wonder how many days we will get delivery in those weeks.  I believe that our mail carrier could use an extra day off because he has had a lot of people complaining about his mix-ups.

I just figured they said Tuesday because combined with a holiday that would give them a 3 1/2 day weekend....  Stick out tongue Wink

    Re: Mail Delivery Days

Mr. Gran talked to our mail carrier today when he delivered an order we had placed for some of our contacts and their units and he is against the 5-day delivery because if they skipped Tues. then it would mean delivering mail collected for Sun. - Tues. on the 10 weeks of the year that they have a Mon. holiday.  He isn't real happy with his job in the first place.

    Re: Mail Delivery Days

That is very true, that will make for a very heavy delivery date for them. Not worth it in the long run. I just hope that this doesn't come to pass.
