Hello AS Junkies!
Monday's luncheon at The Globe & Laurel Restaurant was a success! YEAH!
Several AS Junkies gathered to meet and greet, have some great food, and share lots of stories. The AS Junkies were joined by a dozen other guests who were willing to give support to Any Soldier, Inc. Fantabulous!!! (See info below about van tour)
In the group of about 30... We were honored to have Fr. Vandenboogard (active Marine); Sgt. Lloyd, (Ret., Army, WWII); and
Mr. Davis, (Army, Vietnam era Veteran). Everyone enjoyed sharing stories with these gentlemen.
We were privileged to have Cpt. Steven Vandenboogard, (Catholic Priest) present the invocation prior to our meal.
He also graciously shared his story with us regarding his three tours in Iraq, his injuries, his current medical situation (Cander, Kidney dialysis; etc etc) and his devotion to the troops. He also answered various questions from the group! NICE NICE NICE
Two gentlemen who attended had planned to golf in the tournament which was canceled, so instead they joined us at the restaurant. One is an AS Junkie from Rockville, MD; the other is an avid supporter who donates postage money every two weeks so I can mail more packages each month! GO A.S.! GO AS.!. GO A.S. JUNKIES!!!
VAN TOUR: A tour van traveled from Essex - Baltimore County, MD - with twelve folks, who enjoyed the luncheon (preceeded by a short tour of the Quantico Marine Base)/ After lunch they enjoyed a tour of the Marine Museum before going to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC where they enjoyed the picturesque Cherry Blossoms! Wooo Hooo.... so nice.
Included in the tour group were four teenagers who participate in a home school community and they were so glad to be able to attend as a field trip. They were proud to say they got to visit the famous Quantico Marine Base... they did some studying in preparation for the trip, including looking up Adm Chester Nimitz so they could identify him and his quote which is engraved on the wall at the museum! SMART!
Also in this group was the Director of the Home School group... and she now has plans to get these students actively involved in sending letters to our troops! SUPER~!
The group was also privileged to meet Christina, Any Soldier, Inc's Treasurer who was able to be with us. She even brought her son EVAN! A very young AS JUNKIE!
OTHER DETAILS!
Thanks go out to some other AS Junkies who participated in absentia! They could not attend, but were with us in spirit or there as donated items!
Deb W. of Baltimore made some home-made chocolates, wrapped them very patriotically as table favors for all the participants! Deb also donated a beautiful gift basket of Tastefully Simple products which was given as a prize to the person who came the farthest. (The prize went to Peggy Kane of Southern California, who flew in to participate with us! WOW!)
Thanks also goes to Kathy C. in NY for the flag which Fr. Steve will deliver to Walter Reed; along with folders that were delievered to some Marines on base with a beautiful poem and some letters of thanks!
Several folks also very generously donated monies to pay for the lunches of our servicemen who were to attend.
Thanks Pat C. (Eastern Shore, MD); Kathy C (NY); Pat F (Baltimore MD); Cathy T (Baltimore, MD)! KUDOS!!!
Goody Bags were taken by Joan D. back to the Base's computer dept for the seven marines who were scheduled to attend the luncheon, but due to a computer failure, their permission to attend was canceled since they had to work on getting the computers back up and running! (WHAT A BUMMER!). Joan did let me know that the computer system was repaired before night fall! LOL.
I'm sure there are many other details that I'm forgetting, so I'll review this later and see if I have things to add.
MOST CERTAINLY _-- THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all who did attend...
Oh, AND -- a donation of $505 was made to Any Soldier from the profits of this event.
Will be looking to schedule a luncheon in conjunction other events in Baltimore in June as another fundraiser!
WATCH FOR DETAILS! oh, and watch for pictures, etc on the AS site on the NEWS page.
Take care y'all!
