    Afghanistan Humanitarian Mission

Sloss, Joel P., last posted Feb. 20, a portion of which reads:

I know economic times are hard in the US but we continue our efforts since our government has decided that we must be here.

I have attached a photo of the last village outreach program we did and you can get a sense of the urgency by looking at the photos.   There were probably 500 people who showed up for our visit. All nice people who were desperate for any kind token of help.

There have been 28 requests for his address (including mine), but given the volume of people his team is in touch with, more help might be in order?   His special request is for school supplies, and things for the locals that the Afghan government has not provided.  This is Sloss's third deployment to Afghanistan.

    Regards,

    Ginny

I will send him  a box.  I have been sending aid boxes to Jenny Mccarthy but I always have something to spare.

I was fortunate to hit on a final clearance sale at Marshalls and picked up 10 girls hats & mitten sets for 30c each - WOW!!   They are adorable and warm and fluffy.   I would love to send them and some candy to LTC Sloss for his HA efforts (envisioning many smiling, happy, warm Afghan girls), but am currently blocked from receiving any addresses.  Tongue Tied

I'm glad you are "back in business"!  I am packing a box of "goodie bags" (toys, trinkets, candy) for the children and will get it on its way Monday! (I sent children's sandals/socks, and lots of boxed crayons last week).

    Cheers!

Have any of you heard from Slos?.  He was dropped and is now in old contacts.

I have been looking for Sloss also because I have a box for him. Think I will wait another week and then just send it anyway. I can't use the children's things.

I had an email thank you from him April 5, and told him I would be sending him a box of "goodie bags" about every 3 weeks.  I have a box ready to mail to him next week, so will drop him an email to confirm his address still current, and suggest he check in with AS.

He has been on leave, he's back now and will be at the same address until September.

Joel posted with the Support Team today on the "where to send" page, and is again on "active".

Sent him a box last week. He's scheduled to leave mid August, so I marked it as "school supplies to be given to the commander" if he is not there anymore. I do not know how long it takes for a box to reach him, given what is happening now. I hope he posts the name of someone who will take over his mission for him. I especially want to help girl's schools after reading Thomas J. Friedman's compelling op-ed piece in the Sunday NY Times this past weekend. It's about the urgent need for girls to be educated in Afghanistan, and the long reaching ramifications of their be coming educated - and why the Taliban doesn't want them going to school.

    Re: Afghanistan Humanitarian Mission

I have not had much time lately to check out the forums, but have continued to support the troops.

Sarah, thank you for sharing the article about education in the other post.

Shane Cordrey posted in June.  Represents 130/40, has had 17 requests.

They train Afghan service men, and apparently support these men and their families.  Requesting food (no fridge/freezer, unreliable microwave) , hygiene items, magazines, as well as clothing and school supplies for the nationals and their children.

I am sending one box of snack items and a few school items - all I have on hand right now.
