Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
Gee, I forgot about this thread! I will go home tonight after spending the half of the day I am taking off work to spend with my dad (and mom) for Memorial Day and look up a couple more to post out to you. So many movies, so little time!
We did watch the remake of The Day THe Earth Stood Still last night. One: wouldn't call it a remake...perhaps a movie with the same name and a different story. It was a mix of Day, War of the Worlds, and book series I read by SM Stirling about what happens when all the mechanical things on earth simply stop working. Very much like that, actually. Two: I know it is not a movie about war, but there were soldiers all over the movie. *G* So, It is sort of a sci-fi war movie. I liked it though, for what it was.
Will give you some legit movies this week.

Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
Ok, in rememberance of D-Day, my husband and I are watching Ike: Countdown to D Day.
I would recommend this. It is a made for tv movie with Tom Selleck playing Ike. It is of the time from Ike being named Supreme Allied Commander to the day of the invasion. It is a talking movie, not much if any action in it, but I think it is a good portrayal of what went on for the Operation Overlord portion of D-Day. Now, in saying that there are some historical inaccuracies in the movie. And they completely left out the naval half of the invasion: Neptune. Now, I bet you haven't seen a movie that mentions it, neither have I. Maybe we can get a movie maker to come up with something original...Ok, I know I am dreaming! The problems with the historical inaccuracies aside, it is worth the watch. Enjoy! oh...I give it 8/10 stars.

Re: Military movies/video reviews
Has anyone seen Stop-Loss? I think it came out last year. I'll be truthful, I couldn't tell by the short preview whether it was supportive or realistic, I just remember being both captivated and moved by there being a movie made "today" about the war we are fighting today, and I really wanted to see it. Unfortunately, but the time our "once a year" movie date came around, I missed it. and we rarely rent, so I haven't had a chance. Any thoughts/opinions/commentary about Stop-Loss?

Do not know if anyone else noticed it this year or not, but usually on Memorial day and D Day, the channels are packed with WWII movies. I grew up hearing about the war every night and everyone in the family watched those movies every time they came on. This year, no Longest Day, neither Memorial Day nor D Day, no Midway, In Harm's Way, Heaven Knows Mr Allison, A Bridge too Far, Flying Tigers, Band of Brother or even Saving Private Ryan. Maybe it is our cable carrier, but those two days seemed just like any other day on TV. A quick news coverage of the Normandy ceremony but that was all.
Maybe I am getting old
My favorite is Band of Brothers, especially the interviews with *** Winters and the rest of the men still living at the time of filming

Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
It must have been your region. We had movies this year. Of course, I can't remember which ones, but we watched some. Pretty sure Midway was on, but not sure what else there was. We always get Tora! Tora! Tora!, but we have alot on dvd, so we watch them as the days approach too.
But, I wouldn't be surprised if they slowed down showing them. Frankly, none of the people I work with (minus ones that are my age or over-which is 2 others) have seen any movie that would play-just not interested in them anymore. Sad commentary on the state of things.
They don't make movies like they used to. (Oh great! Now I am on old fuddy duddy! I will be telling tales about how I walked up hill in snow to school or something!!!) Ahhhh!

Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
Our area had WWII and WWI movies on all weekend long and the mili channel had Vietnam documentaries on as well.
No Longest Day tho. That one is usually on. Also no Gettysberg. Altho that is usually on over July 4th weekend. We have several channels in our area that play the old black and whites over patriotic weekends and this past Memorial Day was no exception. Band of Brothers usually runs for a 24 hour period.
There were also a number of documentary/interviews with WWII Veterans. Really interesting.
Guess it just depends on the cable company. Of course I'm still upset that they took away the Bluegrass channel!!!(:

Re: Military movies/video reviews
Ok, different movie for you. This is post-WWII, but focuses on 3 vets returning home to the same home town, and how their lives play out. It is called "The Best Years of Our Lives" and is from 1947. This is the one that has Harold Russell playing one of the vets. He lost both hands in a training accident, and plays a double amputee in the movie. the movies director saw him in a training viedo and changed the character in his movie to an amputee so he could have this young man in his movie. It also has Myrna Loy, Fredrick March, Dana Andrews and a youngish Theresa Wright. Myrna Loy had spent the war years with the Red Cross leading the entertainment of the troops, so she was a great choice to be in this movie, as she had gained so much from her war time experiences and she really wanted to do this movie. It is of course dated now, but I think the underlying drama is still the same as what it would be now. If you have not seen it, if you get a chance watch it. It is good and timely.
I give it 9/10 stars for the type of movie it is.
Thanks
Heidi

Re: Military movies/video reviews
Heidi Hello!
I just looked up "The Best Years of Our Lives" on Netflix and it won 7 Academy Awards. I ordered it and placed it at the top of my list. Thanks for the suggestion.
Happy New Year!

Great! Let me know what you think. It is one of my favorite. I love Myrna Loy, and the cast just did a wonderful job with this script. I hope you like it!

Re: Military movies/video reviews
I think this is one of the best "coming home" movies ever. Some lines may be a bit dated (and in 2010 we are less openly scandalized by things like divorce than we thought we were in 1947) but, in the big picture, I think it's timeless. Theresa Wright, who plays Myrna Loy's daughter, is also one of my favorites. She was in "The Men" with Marlon Brando as well, a movie about a paraplegic vet from a few years later, which is also very good. I think it was Brando's first major film role, and he is gorgeous. But "The Best Years of Our Lives" is one of those movies everyone should see.
p.s. Heidi, most of the "young people" I know (I'm 47, so define it how you will) are not terribly interested in these movies, but I have spotted a window of opportunity with my 11-year-old son, and so I intend to start renting them more often. A few months ago "Run Silent, Run Deep" was on - another one of my all-time favorites - and he was mesmerized, despite what now appear to be pathetic special effects (look! it's a model sub in a pool!). A good story will still get his attention.

Re: Military movies/video reviews
When my kids were young my parents would sit them all the time, my dad was big into war movies, his favorite was "Bridge Over River Kwai" my kids (age 21 and 19) can still til this day quote lines from it or sing the theme song...my dad would have been so proud of my sailor (he was also Navy) Its a very good story to watch, but again it is dated, but no real special effects, just the true attrocities of war and prisoner camps. Midway, Run Silent Run Deep, A Bridge Too Far....too many to list.

Re: Military movies/video reviews
Bridge over River Kwai and Run Silent run deep are two of the best. Midway is awesome, and Tora, Tora, Tora is a MUST see for anyone. Don't get me started!*lol* Barbara-that is the age to get them to watch these movies. Kids have to know the past, and these movies tell the story. One of the new ones that I love is the movie based on a rescue of a group of Bataan death march survivors. It is called The Great Raid. It is just a great movie, and I was shocked at how close the movie came to the real story. I reccommend it to everyone. Unlike Pearl Harbor, which doesn't get any points from me, or any of the WWII vets I know-and I know alot of them! Three of them walked out of the theater, which I would have too if my husband hadn't made me stay.
Ooops..ok, off the soap box!! Anyway, enjoy all the movies, and tell us about yours too!
Oh...btw-The Hurt Locker is coming out on video this month! Can't wait to get it. Might have to get one for me and one to pass out to my friends!

Re: Military movies/video reviews
2 top rated military movies from 2009 that are really worth seeing are 'The Messenger' and 'Hurt Locker'. Neither stayed long at the movie theatre but if you can catch them on video, I highly reccomend them both.
