Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
Gee, I forgot about this thread! I will go home tonight after spending the half of the day I am taking off work to spend with my dad (and mom) for Memorial Day and look up a couple more to post out to you. So many movies, so little time!
We did watch the remake of The Day THe Earth Stood Still last night. One: wouldn't call it a remake...perhaps a movie with the same name and a different story. It was a mix of Day, War of the Worlds, and book series I read by SM Stirling about what happens when all the mechanical things on earth simply stop working. Very much like that, actually. Two: I know it is not a movie about war, but there were soldiers all over the movie. *G* So, It is sort of a sci-fi war movie. I liked it though, for what it was.
Will give you some legit movies this week.

Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
Ok, in rememberance of D-Day, my husband and I are watching Ike: Countdown to D Day.
I would recommend this. It is a made for tv movie with Tom Selleck playing Ike. It is of the time from Ike being named Supreme Allied Commander to the day of the invasion. It is a talking movie, not much if any action in it, but I think it is a good portrayal of what went on for the Operation Overlord portion of D-Day. Now, in saying that there are some historical inaccuracies in the movie. And they completely left out the naval half of the invasion: Neptune. Now, I bet you haven't seen a movie that mentions it, neither have I. Maybe we can get a movie maker to come up with something original...Ok, I know I am dreaming! The problems with the historical inaccuracies aside, it is worth the watch. Enjoy! oh...I give it 8/10 stars.

Re: Military movies/video reviews
Has anyone seen Stop-Loss? I think it came out last year. I'll be truthful, I couldn't tell by the short preview whether it was supportive or realistic, I just remember being both captivated and moved by there being a movie made "today" about the war we are fighting today, and I really wanted to see it. Unfortunately, but the time our "once a year" movie date came around, I missed it. and we rarely rent, so I haven't had a chance. Any thoughts/opinions/commentary about Stop-Loss?

Do not know if anyone else noticed it this year or not, but usually on Memorial day and D Day, the channels are packed with WWII movies. I grew up hearing about the war every night and everyone in the family watched those movies every time they came on. This year, no Longest Day, neither Memorial Day nor D Day, no Midway, In Harm's Way, Heaven Knows Mr Allison, A Bridge too Far, Flying Tigers, Band of Brother or even Saving Private Ryan. Maybe it is our cable carrier, but those two days seemed just like any other day on TV. A quick news coverage of the Normandy ceremony but that was all.
Maybe I am getting old
My favorite is Band of Brothers, especially the interviews with *** Winters and the rest of the men still living at the time of filming

It must have been your region. We had movies this year. Of course, I can't remember which ones, but we watched some. Pretty sure Midway was on, but not sure what else there was. We always get Tora! Tora! Tora!, but we have alot on dvd, so we watch them as the days approach too.
But, I wouldn't be surprised if they slowed down showing them. Frankly, none of the people I work with (minus ones that are my age or over-which is 2 others) have seen any movie that would play-just not interested in them anymore. Sad commentary on the state of things.
They don't make movies like they used to. (Oh great! Now I am on old fuddy duddy! I will be telling tales about how I walked up hill in snow to school or something!!!) Ahhhh!

Re: Military movies/video reviews - Music Within
Our area had WWII and WWI movies on all weekend long and the mili channel had Vietnam documentaries on as well.
No Longest Day tho. That one is usually on. Also no Gettysberg. Altho that is usually on over July 4th weekend. We have several channels in our area that play the old black and whites over patriotic weekends and this past Memorial Day was no exception. Band of Brothers usually runs for a 24 hour period.
There were also a number of documentary/interviews with WWII Veterans. Really interesting.
Guess it just depends on the cable company. Of course I'm still upset that they took away the Bluegrass channel!!!(:
