    Themed Care Packages

My boyfriend is in the army and I've sent him a "few" of these themed care packages.  Sometimes I need new ideas as I'm sure some of you anysoldier junkies can relate.  The same old care package can get a little boring after awhile so I've taken some of the ideas I've found online and compiled one giant list.  I'm sure many of you have great ideas and I'd love to hear them.  Here is my "little"....well not so little list! Enjoy!

    www.hersheygifts.com/p...2(Hershey)

    Christmas Ideas:
how about a Christmas card swap, I know postage would be a little more but soldiers would be bombarded with cards across the nation, those little Christmas trees that they sell in all of the mail order catalogs (Lillian Vernon, etc.) that come with their own ornaments, mini Christmas stockings and candy canes or those little candy bags of coal (bubble gum ones), the green and red M&Ms for the holidays, an Advent Calendar box, Oriental Trading Company has these. They are little pine trees (about 4" tall) that have a mineral solution on them (I'm going by memory here, I have a whole bag upstairs in a closet but am too lazy to dig them out). You add water to the little base, and these color mineral salts "grow" on the tree and look like colored snow and decorations

Turkey Jerky, dried cranberries I think they are called Craisens?, if you check a good candy store there are some candies called Peas n Carrots ( they are round green balls and small orange squares ), candy corn, beef jerky or summer sausage = venison, potato chips = potatoes, canned veggies = veggies, dried fruits and assorted mixed nuts are themselves assorted crackers or breadsticks = asst. breads, hostess fruit pies for the pies, cupcakes for cakes, you could even send some caramel sauce with shortbread cookies for the gravy! and send it in one of those cheapy cornucopia baskets from the craft stores and stick some plastic or silk colored leaves around it and write a note on a nice autumn looking picture postcard ! If you have kids - or access to some, you can do some Thanksgiving crafts. The old trace-you-hand and color turkey comes to mind, instant mashed potatoes, many of the big candle companies make scented candles that would fit this theme and Thanksgiving also, for example, Yankee has Harvest, Cranberry Chutney, Apple Cider, Autumn Lodge, Pumpkin Pie, and Spiced Pumpkin

Then we colored pictures - or threw around a football etc. (take pictures doing activity). We all ate dinner together (take picture having dinner). We had a full day so we were tired when it was time to set down and watch our favorite TV programs (take picture watching TV). Later we snuggled up in our jammies (take picture in jammies) and had a nighttime snack (take picture snacking). We love you very much and miss you! (send picture of kiss goodnight)

Indifferent Wow. Indifferent  I think it's going to take me a few days to read all of the above!  But those are way cute ideas, Las Vegas Angel!  The Sponge Bob one is too funny!  Thanks for all of the ideas... I don't think I'll ever put together a non-themed package again! Big Smile

Ahahaha... it does make me laugh, but in a good way!  I think it's a cute idea and if I had a contact with a fondness for Sponge Bob I would put one together too!

FWIW, not sure if you've checked in-store already, but both Target and WalMart have lots of good Sponge Bob stuff (cut-out wall decorations, magnet board, string lights, blankets, etc.) on their websites if you do a search for "Sponge Bob".

    Good luck! Big Smile

    Speaking of Sponge Bob...

One thing I have learned is that stuff on the lighter side goes over very well.  They are in a bland, even grim, environment...all brown sand, rocks, heat, and dust. Most of them love anything colorful, anything fun.  A lot of them are not quite done with their childhoods, and they sorely miss the opportunity to just be crazy kids for a little while. They appreciate shampoo; they LOVE squirt guns.  I still send practical stuff, but the toy section in the dollar store is my favorite haunt these days.  Similarly, for female soldiers...the more girly-girl, the better. Even though they probably don't normally think of themselves as girly girls, they feel the absence of these things that say "home."

WOW! What great ideas! I had a couple of females that were into scrapbooking and decorating their letters home.. I would send supplies and stickers etc to them. I gave them a nickname...they were my sticker girls. When they sent letters to me the envelopes were always adorned with stickers.

I just sent a 'feminine' box to my lady soldier.  I put in some body spray and flavored lip gloss, along with some asian wooden hand fans and a few other things I can't remember now.  I asked her if she wanted some 'girly' things and she responded with a resounding 'YES"!  The toughest gal still wants to be a lady!

Very cool ideas!  I've never done themed packages because I'm not that creative, but now I don't have to do the thinking - just the shopping!  Thanks!  Can't wait to put together my first themed package!

    Hi!

WOW! I was really impressed when I read your post! Those are some really great ideas that I'm sure the soldiers would appreciate. It's more exciting to create a themed box rather than just a box! Thanks for some wonderful ideas!

That's it!!! I'm adding you to my list of heroes!!!

This is all absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to get home tonight to inventory what I already have and make notes on things I need to do theme boxes. I bought water balloons and squirt guns yesterday so I think I'm on my way!!! Oh, and Walmart has the "balloon launcher." I'm not entirely sure that's a good idea but it sounded like fun to me!! Of course I bought it!

    Re: Themed Care Packages

Well it has already been said, but great ideas.

I am glad to see the beach on.. because that is my next package, though I have no idea to whom (I am new so I have not established any direct soldiers:))

I have tons of squirt guns locked and well unloaded Big Smile  I am going to include the inflatable balls, bless their hearts they already have the sand.. making a CD is a great idea.. I will include it, and forgive me if it was on there, bec I did "speed read" :)  would they play with frisbees or is it too darn hot? I have a slingshot ready, was thinking about other thinking about adding some other stuff and now I have ideas.. thanks again!!

Appreciate any advice - since I don't have any "regulars" lol  is there something key I should search on or look for to send that type of package too? like what their arrangements are, etc.. or maybe even something I should not send this type of package to someone

    thanks
