Since so many contacts ask for reading material ie: both magazines and books I keep looking for books to send as well as the usual periodicals. 

In honor of Presidents' day:

The First Salute by Barbara Tuchman - A View of The American Revolution - with a lot on Washington.  ppbk, but not exactly pocket sized.  also not exactly light reading although not real heavy stuff either.

Abraham Lincoln, His Essential Wisdom, edited by Carol Kelly-Gangi. hrdcvr but small and thin enough to fit in a bubble mailer.  Interesting and cool quotes from his life and speeches.  Found it at the B&N sale table.

My favorite books are:

Keith Armstrong and others, Courage After Fire. Great for families, troops and therapists.

Dave Grossman's books, On Killing and On Combat. He is a former Army Ranger, and teaches military. These books are not expensive and explain a lot about how people do not want to kill, and how difficult it is for most to have killed. In On Combat, he explains the physiological changes of what happens when a person is in a life/death situation, and - for example, why a Soldier may think he did nothing to help his buddies, but in fact he really did a lot.

Jonathan Shay's books - Odysseus in America and Achilles in Vietnam. These are a more difficult read, and he compares the experience of Odysseus to all soldiers. He is a great psychiatrist, and has advice on how the military could help lower combat stress. Works at Boston VA.

Aphrodite Matsakis ' books - there is a new one that came out in 2007 or 2008. If your library has Vietnam Wives but not anything newer, take it - there is one really good chapter about what it was like to have "boots on the ground" - and even though the country is different, I learned a lot about what it would be like in Iraq.

Author? I Love my Rifle More than You. - great book by female soldier who served in Iraq.

Jackie Spinner, journalist. Tell Them I Didn't Cry.- female journalist in Iraq - great book to read on a long flight. Oh - I forgot to say that I got some really funny looks reading "On Killing" at a Souplantation - middle aged, graying woman reading this book!

Hi,

  I saw Pat Tillman's mother on the Today Show the other day. She has written a tribute to her son called "Boots on the Ground by Dusk".  I'm sure it is a heartwrenching story considering the events that occurred after his death, but I plan to get a copy ASAP.

They went back to the scene of the battle with surviving members of their unit accompanied by the men they fought.

Bumping this one up - both LT Gen Moore (RET) and Mr. Galloway, I believe, will be at the American Veterans Conference in Washington, D.C. noted on the News Page here on the site this Nov. 

 You can see the videos of Gen. Moore from previous yrs conference by clicking on the links from the News page.  He is as compelling now as he was back then!

FYI - I did a search on 'Veterans Day" and my state name along with ceremony and came up with a whole list of ceremonies and parades being held in the state I live in for Veterans Day:) 

If you lleave out the state you get ones on a National level - ie the D.C. conference - and all kinds of good links to Veterans sites for info on Veterans information, Veterans homes, etc. 

So if you are interested in supporting our Veterans now's the time to do the search because all the info is front and center this time of year:)

I just finished NO TRUE GLORY: A Frontline Account of the Battle for Fallujah. The book was great though not for the faint of heart and don't leave it out were the children can get to it. Some of the pictures in the book are rather disturbing. The book is an account of Operation Vigilant Resolve (cancelled in April 2004) and Operation Phantom Fury (November 2004 offensive strike) through the eyes of the 1st Marine Division.
