    Boot Socks

I keep seeing postings from soldiers asking for boot socks.  As they are asking specifically for "boot" socks I am assuming that they are not anything that can be picked up in my local Wally World.  Where do you find them?  Online?  With my guys pounding the dirt everyday I want to get them something that is comfortable but won't wear out too quickly.

Has anyone sent any boot socks recently that can point me in the right direction?

Will take any and all suggestions.  Thanks in advance.

    Re: Boot Socks

Good question.  I was wondering the same myself.  Confused  Do I shop at the local Army/Navy store?

I did find boot socks at Walmart in the section with work clothes - Dickies. I also found them at KMart once. I look whenever I am in a store I think might have them but they are not easy to find. Especially now with warm weather coming I find them even harder to find. Haven't tried an Army/Navy store. They might carry them.

You might want to read through the Socks, socks, socks thread under this forum.  I hope I can get the link transferred right.  I am not as good as Jennifer at this.

There's a place called The Sock Company - it's their site name also - socks plus, if you put "military boot socks" in their search engine it will list what they sell for you.  Not cheap but you can get style numbers, etc and then look on line for less expensive deals on same.  Don't know if they have wharehouses in other parts of the country - if they do, the wharehouses tend to have sales.  They sell all the major brands - Smartwool, Fox River, etc

A contact posted a link to the site a couple of years ago because the boot socks he was looking for there met Marine Corps regs - I bookmarked it but now can't find the bookmark:):).   At the time, another Junkie pointed me in the direction of Etailer discounts so if you check around you might find the same.

    Good Luck.

I found a couple of websites where I found what I thought were pretty good deals and placed orders.

on this one I found these socks on sale for 6.00!!   Now they are 10.79 , but on the Fox River Mills site the price is 18.49!! :

    Then there is this:  http://www.amazingsocks.com/web-pid-F2300-Wigwam-Merino-Wool-Lite-Hiker-Sock-itemclearance.htm

I hope they were a usable color.

    Re: Boot Socks

So many sock threads I didn't know where to post this so I flipped a coin:). Just kidding - anyway -

I saw this site advertised on the military channel the other day and just got around to checking it out.

    S4 Military Surplus and Supplies

They have a “GI cushion sole sock” 2.99 US made, wool and cotton, black and olive, sm, medium, large sizes. (1st item after the Sealskinz on the Footwear/Boots page).

They also have “40 Below Wigwams” for 7.99 but doesn’t give fiber content. (same page further down).

A lot of their stuff is US made and they have phone (not 800 tho, fax and email ordering)

Maybe someone with more “sock” knowledge than I could check out the socks and see what you think. It was the “wool cotton” blend that caught my attention.

Thanks, Ann, Well yeah the print's a little goofy.  Obviously the fault of my computer:):)

If the "GI Cushion Sole Sock" is the same one I tried a few years ago (description and price are the same), they shrink considerably in the wash.  They're ok if you're looking for a completely disposable sock.  If you wash them before sending, buy a size up, use cold water and line dry them.

The "40 Below Wigwams" are wool (or they were when I tried them).  Definitely wash inside out before sending.  They produce a considerable amount of lint with the first drying.  These are good, warm socks.

My favorite sock, and the only one that's been commented on by any of my contacts, is Smartwool - the Light Hiker for summer and Medium Hiker or Expedition Trekker for winter.

    Re: Boot Socks

Several Marines contacts in Afghanistan ask for "white tube socks."   Does it mean white wool/wool blend boot socks or cotton blend tube socks?  Some brands of cotton blend tube socks are moisture wicking.

Jocee - Thanks for the info, esp on the wool/cotton blend.  One more question on them - what climate, conditions did you use them for? Wouldn't they keep feet cold if they get wet in a cold climate? (with cotton in them?). Thx. Ann

    Re: Boot Socks

Well I clicked on the link Marty posted.  Quite some time ago one of our contacts who has since redeployed sent us a gift in a boot box.  YAY - a real boot box with all the info on military boots used in the field.  No it wasn't a hint they weren't asking for boots.

Anyway it gave me the specs i needed to check out boots online for another contact.  Sadly I couln't afford them.

So you can imagine my surprise to see military boots front and center on Extreme OUtfitters page - top left first item first page - for a price you probably can pay for on a paper route pay!

Seriously - my husband's work boots cost more than that and the prices I found a couple of months ago were at least $60 more elsewhere not including shipping.

    Just thought I'd mention it:).

So Thanks for the link Marty.
