    Hi all!

Today, at Dollar General, I found special Sweethearts conversation hearts.  They're called Red, White, and You.  They've teamed up with the USO and make a donation to USO Operation Care Package.  The hearts are red, white, and blue and say things like Brave One, My Hero, Proud of U, Home Safe, and a bunch of other sayings.  Its 50 cents a box, so i bought a ton!!

    Re: Fun Stuff

Oh, that sounds like a great idea!  I will have to stop by Dollar General and pick some up for my next package.

It may be a little unorthodox, but I sent a package recently that received good reviews from its receipient.

I work at an art store (Michaels, to be specific) and decided to try sending a different brand of "fun."  I put together a themed "craft" package. While I know most guys don't do crafts (me exluded, I think... lol), it is definitely something unique to try.

Michaels sells wooden frames for $1, and small bottles of acrylic paint for 59 cents, as well as inexpensive brushes!  I put together a small craft "kit" for my soldier to paint a frame for a loved one.  I included some Army stickers I found in the scrapbooking section, but they also sell 25 cent already-painted wooden accents as an option.  In addition, I sent a disposable camera with the frame kit so that they could take pictures for the frame.

Also, in the craft section in with all of the spring foam projects you can find in the 'center' aisle that runs around the store, there are origami books that come with patterns and paper for $1.  You can also print out additional instructions from numerous websites online.  The "ninja star" origami pattern is a winner, for sure, if you can find it online.

I also included a leather working set that Michaels sells, where you can make your own leather tool & flashlight holder.  Everything is precut, and it needs nothing in addition to what is included in the kit except a pair of scissors to cut the thread.  There are other options at the store, such as moccassins, medicine bags, and leather cuff bracelets.

In the jewelry section, under "Naturals" there's a beginners hemp set that is not very expensive (especially if you get the 40% off coupon in the paper... if not, print out the coupons from JoAnn's website.  Michaels will honor them!).  I purchased an additional roll of hemp.  Bracelets and chokers can be made for the kids in the area, for themselves or for their loved ones back home.

The last thing I included was a small wooden plane you assemble from three pieces, that he could paint with the paint I included with the frame.  The plane was only $1 and I found it in the model car section with the model rockets.  It also really flies when you throw it. :D

I was a little worried about how my package would be received, because crafts are not generally a "manly" thing, but he was very excited to have something different to do!

As a note, there are always numerous kits you can find around the store with easy to do projects to help pass 30-60 minutes of time.  Some are far more appropriate for our Any Female Soldiers, but there's a lot for the boys to do too!

Also, I just worked a delivery truck for Michaels today that had a couple dozen new products for the "Kids Impulse" aisle (labeled with a bright orange sign that says "Fun Finds Under $5!) with a lot of cool new stuff--including very inexpensive silly string!  There are generally cheap, $1 toys down that aisle... playdoh, mini rubik's cubes, parachute men (plastic army guys attached to parachutes that you can drop from high distances and they float down), sticky bubbles (bubbles that don't pop!), silly putty, bouncy balls, water guns, note pads, packs of pens, small crafts.

Other easy craft and art ideas for male and/or female soldiers: Air dry clay (Crayola Model Magic is a good one), blank bookmarks with markers and stickers, small sketch book and pencils, a friendship bracelet book (comes with floss) OR embroidery floss and printed instructions for them, duct tape and duct tape wallet instructions (http://www.rpi-polymath.com/ducttape/duct_tape_wallet.html), small velvet art posters (velvety posters with white sections to color in), t-shirts and fabric markers, t-shirt and tye dye kit!  Every now and then Michaels has t-shirts on sale for $2. :)

In case you haven't thought of it yet, the hospitals, and especially the mental health units, always ask for crafty items.  The staff likes to get their patients' minds off the norm for a time of rehabilitation.  They would be very grateful for a box of your crafts.

    Re: Fun Stuff

I love these posts because it's true... just because our men and women are out there doing some serious business, they deserve to have some fun during their downtime!

In a package I'm sending to Afghanastan I included one of my son's footballs.  Sent one to a friend's son in Iraq a couple of years ago and his troop loved it!  (I was so happy my son thought of it because at the time I was concentrating more on basic stuff to send).

My package is all ready to be taped up and addressed..... But now I'll have to make another trip to the 99 cent store to see what FUN items I can add in!

I did actually find a large 200/man, 200/woman hospital unit to send my crafts to. :D

I think Pinata's sound like fun, I wouldn't limit them to Cinco De Mayo, they are fun for any occasion or just because. Anything to bring smiles to the faces of these brave men and women, and something to add a little fun to their days. I say go for it..it certainly couldn't hurt

I've seen Silly String mentioned a few times and just saw a picture of some of the soldiers playing with it.  One of my guys asked for it but I thought it was pressurized and can't be mailed?

If I'm wrong then I'm off to get some!  Anyone know what the rule is on that for sure?

Pressurized cans sent by air are against postal regulations, but regulations don't stop some people.  Many people have admitted that they have sent aerosol shave cream, cheese, etc.  That doesn't change the regulations - just puts them in jeopardy of losing their right to send packages  to those countries.

Okay.. so the Silly String is right out!  I honestly want to stick to the rules.. it's just that it's difficult to know what they are sometimes!  I was shocked to see fingernail polish on the list the other day, I never would have guessed.  I'm sure I've sent a few items not knowing that they were on the black list.  Especially since my post office people always read the list of what's in the box and have never said anything!

Thanks for the info.  I'll find some fun things that are okay to send.

    Re: Fun Stuff question

we can't send fingernail polish?  I had bought some bottles to send and am going to go to dollar store pay day to buy items for the guys and gals.

I had never thought of that, I have been looking for stuffed animals for them to pass out, would crayons, markers be good for them to give to the kids?  How about kids socks, decorative ones?   I was thinking of stuffing them between items, even some shirts and shorts for kids.  I figured it would be easy to roll them up and stuff them in pockets.  Also ribbons, bows and such for girls, and rub on items that boys would like, or rubber squichy type toys.

    Any more suggestions?

    Re: Fun Stuff question

Chaplain Jacobs has asked for crayons under his humanitarian list, so I think that's good. the 24-packs that are on special now should fit into pockets. When I asked him about colored pencils, etc, he said they would take those to a school. But I have read that the kids like pens. Somewhere it says we should wait on crayons until the weather cools off, but I have some packed up to send. Hmmm. Maybe better hold off on them.

Part of the Afghan Orphanage discussion says they don't wear shorts, but I've sent t-shirts. If they don't wear those alone, they can layer in the cold weather. I haven't sent socks. I like the ribbons, bow, hairclips idea for the girls. Party City carries good, but pink, balls for 99 cents that I've sent to Operation Christmas Child. Those might be good--even if they're not a soccer ball. They're in the party favors section. Dollar Tree has the little slinkies.

    Most fingernail polish is flammable.

Gonna quit now before I ramble more.

My 3yo and 6yo picked out a soap making kit.  You molded the soap into shapes like playdoh, then let it dry and used it like regular bars of soap.  They also picked out a remote controlled spider.  We also sent some splash toys.  The ones that are like sponges that you fill up with water-footballs, baseballs.  We sent water guns.  We have also sent a hungry hungry hippos travel game and cards.  Every box, I let the kids pick out one thing to send and tell the guys that the boys picked this just for them...I let them either write a note or draw a picture, their choice.  I have to translate sometimes for the 3 yr old since he really doesn't write yet, but it works.  I don't really try to pick the fun things, I let my kids, the experts, do that job.

I have sent harmonicas.  Lots of yo-yos and hackey sacks.  I sent a set of dice and a copy of the rules for Bunco after mentioning my Bunco group in a letter and my guys asking what Bunco was.

    Re: Fun Stuff

I have sent inflatable beach balls, glow in the dark star stickers, travel size games I found (like trivial pursuit, taboo, boggle, etc.)

I try to put at least one small fun thing in each box.

I saw one soldier's post had a photo of her blowing bubbles with local children.  I thought that was just wonderful.

There is a store called Five Below with relatively inexpensive stuff.  I have gotten toys, games and flip flops there for my packages.

Next I am thinking of shopping at one of those craft stores and getting some kits to include with packages.  You know, they sell kits to make all kinds of things.  They usually have everything you need in the box.

Brain teasers are a great idea!

I was talking to some retired Army folks...they all said they really enjoyed reading or things to occupy their time when they weren't working on their missions.

I was thinking that these brain teasers could really be something that would survive the trip and keep them occupied for hours. Some of them have great replay value too. The Great Escape is great one because it's compact. The goal is to get the red tile out the front exit slit of the wooden box so it takes some tactical know-how.

There's a Sudoku peg board game on this site too. Infinite replay value.

You can find brain teasers like these at www.PaxPuzzle.com

I've also seen great puzzle books at the big box stores. I found a Sudoku book the size of a phone book a little while ago.
