    Cool Ties

Has anyone sent any cool ties yet? I know last year a lot of people were making them and thought it might be something the newbies were interested in.

What kind of fabric do you use and where do you get it?  I've had trouble finding suitable fabric locally. Thx. Ann

I have sent a few cool ties that I had made up last year.  It's starting to heat up in a few places.  Ann, I got fabric at JoAnn's.  It was 100% soft cotton, medium weight and a sand color.  It worked out fine.  I need to get sewing to make some for this year though (I bought extra fabric).

At the bottom of the FAQs page (under the forum section in the top headings), there is a section called Helpful Links.  Then you will see this:

  • Beat the heat: sew a cool tie!
  • Watersorb Polymers for the above ties.
  • These link you to instructions for the cool ties and also the water crystals that you put in them.  Hopefully, you can just click on the links I just typed.  I put each finished cool tie in its own ziplock bag along with instructions for use which I coat with clear contact paper since they can get wet from the used cool ties.  Then I put however many I am sending in a larger ziplock bag to mail out.  Hope this helps.

    Hi Kathy,

What do you put down as a description or the cool ties on the custom form?  I read the two strings of posts for cool ties and they said they're like gold over there, but never saw anything about whether you should list them as cool ties on the custom for or list them as something special so they get to your contact.

I never heard of any problems and have always just listed them as cool ties.  If you are concerned, just write neckerchiefs down and it should be good.

This is a link to a web site I have used in the past to purchase cooling helmet liners and bandannas that can also be tied around the neck

Thanks Kathy.  I wasn't sure if I needed a code name or not.

I use 100% cotton in a tan or beige print that would go with desert colors.  I've even found the tan camouflage cotton at Walmart last winter.  I haven't sewed any of that fabric into ties yet.  Normally I already have my guys supplied but I'm behind this year.  I'll be working on mine this week.

I have sent well over 100 in the past 4 years and yes, they are like gold.  I always tell them to write their name on it immediately as there will be many alike floating around the unit.  I even enclose a sharpie and instruct them not to freeze the cool ties as they will burst.  Be sure to follow the directions exactly as you don't want to overfill the fabric tubes.

These are excellent for soldiers stationed in Iraq but isn't not nearly as hot in Afghanistan.

    Re: Cool Ties

Awhile back I bought a bunch of ties on sale and am mailing them out.  Don't remember the exact website, but the brand is Mira Cool Cooling Bandana, comes in variety of colors (I bought tan) and prices depending on which website.  I found this website:  http://www.starsafetytrading.com/1/3443/OccuNomix_One_Size_Fits_All_Wavy_Flag_MiraCool_Bandana?REF=utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=datafeed

selling them for 1.85.   Some charge around 5.00.    I know I paid less than 2.00 and did that because it seemed so much easier and cost effective for me to do that rather than buy supplies and make them.

     Happy shopping.
