    Gran:

Will someone please help me remember whether I just dreamed this or actually read a contact post that we shouldn't send the children the composition books with wires in them?  I am guessing that they could be used for bomb-making or something ominous like that.  Are we only supposed to send loose-leaf paper?

    Gran

    Gran,

I noticed that there are hilroy notebooks that you can send. They don't have the wire, so it's just like a regular book with "neat-rip" edges so the pages don't rip when you take them out. This might work better than loose-leaf paper; just a thought! Oh, and they come in different sizes: 70pgs, 150 pgs, and I think they continue up to 350 pages. Hope this helps! Big Smile

    Jen,

Thanks for your reply.  I know that we have seen them specify in someone's post what was needed, but I'm just too busy to look right this minute.  We got a bag of pencils, but haven't gotten paper.

There are some great deals on hygiene and school supplies at this link:

We're currently camped in Springville UT, and they have a store here, so I will check it out within the next few days and let you know what I find out.

This one looks like fun - they have no rinse shampoo/conditioner and body wash - realitively cheap!  Can't wait to get back from vacation and really check it out!

Re: School supplies, Hygiene Supplies, Humanitarian Aid Supplies

I went to the Survival Solutions store today - they're great - they have a section of Humanitarian Aid Supplies as well as survival items.  I picked up 100 pencils for $6.00, 100 pencil sharpeners for $20.00, some nail clippers at $0.49 each, 4 ounce bottles of combo shampoo/body bath for $0.55 each, 2 ounce bottles of no-rinse body wash for $1.49 each, little portable rolls of TP for $0.69 each, and some individual, single-use packets of shave cream for $0.29 each.  They also have packages of 100 toothbrushes for $20.00, and several other items that I don't remember the prices of.

Ask about quantity discounts - he said that they generally start discounting at quantities of 25 or more.

We chatted with the proprieter for awhile and told him about AnySoldier - turns out he's the son of an Air Force member, and grew up on an air base in North Dakota.  He thanked us for what we're doing for the troops, and said he'd be happy to put up flyers, so we gave him a couple of flyers and some business cards.  I told him I'd plugged his website here and he was grateful for that.

    FWIW.

Re: School supplies, Hygiene Supplies, Humanitarian Aid Supplies

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but we just bought a bunch of 70 sheet spiral notebooks at Wal-Mart for 20 cents each.  Also the Office Depot here (near Salt Lake City at the moment) has the marble-look cover compostition notebooks for 25 cents each.

I also went back to Survival Solutions today (see above post) and picked up :

    100 toothbrushes for $20.00
10 large tubes of toothpaste (not from China) for$12.00
Pack of 10 large hand towels for $$12.00
    100 erasers for $12.00
Pack of 10 pocket tissue packs for $1.49
2 fleece blankets, 50 by 60 inches, for $4.99 each

    Hi Pat,

Our Wal-Mart had the 70-sheet notebooks for 10 cents each. At least they did 2 weeks ago. I'll check again in the next few days.

I also got 24 ct. Crayola crayons for 20 cents, 48-ct. pencils for 97 cents, Rose Art markers (I think 12-count) for 50 cents, and some other things that I can't remember the prices for. I got a bunch of stuff, for not a lot of money!

This is definitely the time of year for the deals!  I just heard a commercial tonight that K-Mart has the 70-sheet notebooks for 10 cents apc., too.  I just packed up several boxes of school supplies for contacts that have requested them.  The school supply boxes turn out to be much less expensive than alot of other types of boxes, given the prices this time of year!Geeked

    Hi.

Gee, I can't believe it's that time again... I was at Wal Mart today and they had school supplies out already. Wire bound notebooks 70 lined sheets each for 5 cents a piece; they were 10 cents last year!  Crayons...Rose Art pack of 24 for 17 cents...the Crayola 24 pack 22 cents. Pencils 24 count for 92 cents. Scissors 55 cents. Rose Art colored pencil packs 60 cents each.

I talked to a couple who were loading up on notebooks. They were sending school supplies to an orphanage in Africa. We swapped info about where to find good deals Big Smile and I gave them an AS card.

    Re: School supplies (Staples)

I need to pay attention to dates before I do a shopping list.  But thanks for the 2008 update.  By the way, several years ago I bought some RoseArt crayons for another project and tried some out - they did not work very well.  Not sure if they are still the same - seemed kind of waxy and did not put out much color.  Off to WalMart tomorrow!

I seem to remember one contact also mentioning that the Crayola brand of crayons didn't get as soft or melt as easily as other brands also.
