I contacted them and they said they base it right off of the usps.gov site and always use priority mail. I ran some calculations myself using the calculator on usps.gov and selecting priority mail service. On what I thought stuff weighed, i.e., I figured 20 cans at 16oz was 20 pounds - and added in a couple pounds for packing and the weght of the can, and it was close to what I figured it would be. There is no way 20 cans would fit in the flat rate box - so you can't assume you can ship in that kind of box.

One order I shipped they actually credited me back some shipping charges because the package weighed less than what they had originally calculated.

Well, that explains it. You probably get more shipped faster this way, anyway. I was just wondering...... I do that alot.

I understand the need for Cajun food. lol I guess that is a good site to know about in the case of an emergency such as snow storms, hurricanes and earthquakes. At least our troops will have a lifeline.

Thanks for the info, I hope you don't think I was being nosy, just always curious. I figure it takes me more than two hours to get a box ready to go, by the time I have packed and repacked to get as much as I can in the flat rate box and then to fill out all the paperwork and to write a letter to go with it. It really does add up. I need a few little anysoldier elves!

Ease.... the closest supermarket of any decent size is 30 minutes away.... packing items for shipment is a pain, and so is the trip to the PO. I figured my time invested in both shopping and shipping is about 2 hours. I can sit and click in in 5 minutes be done. Living in such a rural area perhaps makes the choice easier - we live to see a brown UPS truck show up. Had I still lived in Boston it might be different, with more options and choices. I order a ton online - especially for items you cannot get in the northeast. I am addicted to cajun food... not alot here in Maine. But I know where to find it delivered to my door. Do I pay more than if I lived in New Orleans - sure do - but then I don't live there.

These prices are really high, at least to me. Is there a reason that you didn't just get the items and ship them?

No - they charge for shipping based on weight. I had checked amazon first, but they had minimum order quanties on some items that required a case to be shipped - I wanted to ship a box of special K - amazon had 4 for $20.81, and this site I could order a box for $5.80 - about a 60 cent premium, but I could select my own quantities. Plus amazon wanted a $79 annual membership for free shipping - that seemed way to high.
