A long time ago there was a thread about devices to help female soldiers to "go." Yesterday on the news I saw a new product--Go Girl. It's a device that allows women to pee standing up. It's reusable,etc. And it's only $6.99 for one or $18.99 for three. The website is www.go-girl.com Don't know if anyone is asking for such things, but it sounds handy.

Hand sanitizers and what the postal clerk said...

I just stopped at the post office to pick up some address lables and those plastic sleeves. (They didn't have any, gave me self stick lables and old style customs forms)

Anyway, when I thanked the postal clerk she asked me if I had ever sent a package to the military before. I said no but I was looking up instructions online. She said list everything in detail on the customs form and be sure not to send anything alcohol based. She really stressed "anything" and said that includes those hand sanitzers because they are alcohol based.

Note - I did not ask her any questions other than if they had some of the shipping labels. She volunteered this information.

I have not seen that mentioned on this site yet and I have seen many requests from the soldiers for hand sanitizer. I actually already have some of it packed in two of my three boxes... all sealed in zip lock bags and the boxes are sealed.

Does anyone have more information about this? I can open my boxes and read the containers of hand sanitizer but I think the Postal Clerk is right, I think they are (almost all?) have alcohol.

I would appreciate hearing from you veteran any soldier supporters.

Is it okay for the hygiene items to be travel size?

I see that some of the contacts request travel size and some do not specify a size.

Is it okay to send travel size items if they don't specifically request full size?

I just figured that many small body washes, shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen, bug repellent, would help more people.

Granted, it won't help them for long because they are small, but you get variety too and I can fit more/different things into a box.

Anyway, please let me know your thoughts.

My current boxes are packed and sealed and I will search for contacts that specify travel sizes, but in the future should I be sending full size?

Bug repellent, head tents and laundry soap

Hi All

It's getting to be the time of year in Iraq and Afghanistan (well all over really) when it's getting hot and the bugs are coming out. In the past I have had requests from my Soldiers for head tents. This is so that they can take a break outside in the shade, maybe catch a little nap and have their head protected from bugs. It's a light net that simply fits over their head, even helmet and has a drawstring at the bottom. You can pick them up in the camping section at Walmart for about $1.50 apiece.

Also, and I've seen threads in this forum also, about Units that have to do their own laundry sometimes have really bad water which makes thier uniforms smell horrible and they can't get the smell out. Well, also at Walmart (I'm starting to sound like a commercial) they have what they call hunters laundry soap (also in the camping section) It's in a white bottle with neon letters. It is specially formulated to remove scent and apparently works pretty well based on comments from some of my Soldier contacts. It's not cheap (about $4.00 a bottle maybe 10 washes) but I told them to alternate between the other soap and this and should last a little longer.

Lastly, in the past, I have found sun block with bug repellent in it. I think the bug repellent works pretty good (probably not as good as straight deet) but they are not having to layer all that gunk and in moderate buggy conditions I think it's good. I haven't found any yet this year but let me know if you do.

My little town has a Dollar Tree, along with Dollar General, etc. Anyway, they have 5 oz. tubes of shaving gel for $1.00. None of the other "dollar" stores have it for anywhere near this price.

Has anyone tried the new Pert 3 in 1 for men yet? Saw it at the grocery store yesterday - it is shampoo, conditioner and body wash in one. 12 oz bottle for 2.99. Was in with the women's shampoo tho, not with the men's. Dark green bottle. Guess they expect us women to buy it for the men to get them to try it?

I just read a post on AS where it was mentioned that the Hoo Ahhs brand of cleansing wipes were the wipe of choice...I googled and found many sites that sell them. They come in soft packs rather than tubs and the package is sized to fit in the uniform pocket..plus the size of the wipe is such that two can do the whole body. After all the years I've been a support junkie and I didn't know these existed!! Always learning something!....

I wanted to pass on a suggestion from a female soldier- camper's toilet tissue. It is a small individual roll in a plastic dispenser which fits easily in their pocket. I found it in Walmart in a package of three for about $2.00.

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, I wasn't exactly sure where my post qualified, so I do apologize if it's in the wrong forum. Anyways, I have been supporting a group of female soldiers for the last three months or so, and I want to do something special for them for the 4th of July. I decided I wanted to make individual goody bags for each (12 of them) and put a couple of little things in there. Originally I had wanted to include some Bath and Body Works travel-sized lotion in each, but my bill would've come out to about $30+, so I couldn't do that on my limited budget, especially when I would need another item to go along with it, too. Instead, I found some $1 Bath and Body Works hand sanitizer and bought them all that. However, I'd like to include one more thing, at least, and I am just having trouble coming up with ideas that won't break the bank. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!!

New Product - Colgate Wisp

I recieved a sample with an order I had placed online, of Colgate Wisp. I looked at it and immediately thought "This would be perfect to send to our warriors, especially the ones in remote places." Basically, the Wisp is a disposable toothbrush. It's very small and would fit handily into a pocket or pack.One end of the 3 1/2 inch mini-brush is a set of bristles with a "freshening bead" built in; the other end is a pick to clean between teeth. No water required, no rinsing needed. Go to the website www.colgatewisp.com and check this out. They come four to a pack, and according to the website, should sell for approximately $2.79 per pack. I think these would be very handy for our troops, and I intend to look for them next time I have funds available for care packages, to send to one of my heroes at a remote outpost in Afghanistan.

Did we ever decide if shaving cream could be shipped overseas as long as it wasn't Priority Mail? It seems like I read that somewhere but it doesn't really make sense to me. Any one know for sure? I will go search the USPS website but sometimes that kind of information is buried so deep that I can't find it!!!

Walmart has new types of travel size IrishSpring shower gel for 50cents. Only the new types were 50cents. The original ones were 97cents each. I picked up 2 different kinds...a total of 40 bottles for $20.00. The 50 cent ones were mixed in with the 97cent ones so I had to check the product numbers.

Looking for Shaving Lotion

I have been trying to find inexpensive shaving lotion to send to my troops. I managed to score a 6 pack of 8oz tubes of Natures Organics from Amazon for $14.00. I'm kicking myself for not buying more because now the price is $27.00. So I have been looking around the internet and I found a website called Dollar Days. The sell by the case and at wholesale prices.

Has anyone ever bought from this site or had any experience with Dollar Days?

Do you have a good source for inexpensive shaving lotion?

I know a lot of folks get things from The Dollar Tree but we don't have them in NYC. I have thought about going to a dollar store but I am a bit leery because in the past year there have been several safety warnings about buying things such as toothpaste from those kind of stores. I really really don't want to send the soldiers something that could be a health risk. They have enough to worry about.

shower caps and makeup

Do the female troops use shower caps and can they use makeup and lipstick?

I was given a lot of travel size toiletries and don't know if I should send shower caps.

Also given lots of new lipstick, mascara items, and fingernail polish - can the females use this stuff while deployed?

liquid soap

I have seen several warriors request AXE liquid soap. So when I saw them on sale I over bought. (Seems to be a common issue on this site

Now I am concerned about mailing the liquids. I am not concerned about spillage because I will put them in double ziplocs but is there an issue with putting them in the mail? Are there mail restrictions with liquids?

Hi Everyone!

I'm new here and was hoping for a little guidance before I send out my first package.

A little bit of background: Three years ago, when I first started college, some of the women who mentored me were former Marines who had gone back to school after one or two tours in Afghanistan. Back then, I used to help them put together these giant care packages for friends of theirs still in the service. However, after they graduated (and the people we'd been mailing returned stateside) I never thought to continue doing anything until I ran across this site.

The thing is, I'm still a college student and it's been a rough year financially so I don't have much money to spare right now. After reading through the lists and requesting an address, I got a (small) box of stuff together with a 40 pack of tampons, a bar of deodorant, and a bottle of lotion in an envelope labeled "to any female soldier", a few different packs of candy (since it's almost Halloween), and four or five letters that I bugged my friends for (in addition to my own). (Looking at this package, and thinking of the ones friends and I used to send, I can't help feeling like I'm not putting much in there.)

Is it alright to send so little? Would I be better off just sending the letters and waiting till I have some more money so I can send more items (so it doesn't look to scattered)?

I hate being half assed about things but I truely don't have much to spare just now.

Suggestions please?
