How to Select the Right Cigars

If you're ready to join the ranks of cigar smokers, here is how to get started. The first step is selecting the right cigars to "practice" with. You should start by choosing several different single cigars at your local tobacconist. Do not buy a box of cigars until you have sampled a few singles, first. Don't be afraid to ask the owner or manager for advice.

Choose Mild Cigars

Mild cigars are recommended for beginners, since the more full-flavored cigars would most likely taste too strong (or just plain bad) to a new smoker. Mild cigars are also the least expensive, so you won't have to worry about ruining an expensive cigar by lighting it incorrectly, or by cutting too much off the closed end.

Inspect the Cigar

Once you have determined which type of cigar(s) to purchase, then gently squeeze the cigar to determine if there are any hard or soft spots.

You don't want to take a chance on buying a cigar with a bad draw, or worse yet, one that is plugged and not smokeable. Tip: Reputable tobacconists will usually replace a plugged cigar. Also, inspect the wrapper for cracks or discolorations.

Protect & Smoke

If you do not yet own a humidor, do not buy more cigars than you can smoke within a couple of days, and make sure to leave them in their cellophane packaging (if applicable) until you're ready to smoke. Never leave an unprotected cigar exposed to the elements, as it will quickly dry out. You can temporarily store cigars in a Tupperware or similar container.

My USPS folks today were a little confused, and I don't want my packages to get busted in customs.....and I HOPE the bunch I already SENT don't have a problem!! Not sure if it it a USVI or a USPS issue.....any suggestions appreciated.

Just returned back from the big “as” tray and I can tell you, along with hand sanitizer and wet wipes, stogies are awesome to send to your warriors. First, make sure they smoke them. Then, send them to them.

They not only take your mind off all that is evil but also encourage conversations and esprit de corps. I was very furtunatly to have all of you great AS warriors send my Marines and I some stoagies and I can promise you IT MADE A DIFFERENCE!!!

So if you have sent cigars to troops, share a few tricks of the trade here. I will do the same.

These are handmade cigars rolled by apprentices, so I understand. I've ordered them a couple of times, and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. No fancy boxes and wrappers, just a nice cigar.

If you have an interest in cigars, and would like to see one of the most expensive cigars to come out recently, check out God of Fire, also from Fuente. $18 - $20+ per cigar, but at least you can buy them. There's also the incredible Opus X, but these are next-to-impossible to ever find, and especially not the "different" specialty ones.

Here is a lesson in understanding the what, how, where, why of cigars from someone who also recommended the "Sweethearts" as George did so well previously on the other thread:

Size does matter (LOL) but not always with cigars. A short, fat one can
last as long or longer that a long medium size one. Here is the deal. The
fatter the cigar usually means that more different types of leaves are used
which can add to a cigars flavors, complexity, blah, blah, blah. Generally,
no matter the length, a leaf is used from one end to the other. This is
referred to as a long filler. Some cigars are made from the "left-over
clippings of other cigars. This is called "medium or short-filler". They
taste just as good but the leaf does not go from one end to the other.
These types of cigars usually will not allow the smoker to maintain a long
ash. The length does not indicate a better buy. Some types of tobacco leaf
are very flavorful, mild or strong, and maybe plentiful in supply or not.
This is what dictates the price. Also the leaf that is used to wrap the
outside of the cigar (appropriately named the wrapper) is the most
expensive part used. That is because it is carefully chosen to provide the
best appearance with little or no blemishes. It also is said to contribute
about half of the flavor of the cigar. All harvested leaves go through a
fermentation process and aging. Really good cigars that are sold today
have leaves that were harvested as many as 3, 4, 5 or more years ago.

Yep, Ybor City is the name of the place [near Tampa, FL]. Years ago it was the cigar making
capital of the world. Now it is a shell of itself. Nearly all hand-rolled
cigars are produced outside of the US because of the price of labor.

Ok---So I still don't want to smoke one but I have a better appreciation of them...even though they stink...LOL

They charge only $2.50 per item for shipping. (So a box of cigars is $2.50 to ship) If you click HERE you will see the cover of their most recent print catalog and how they are support the troops and you can too by purchasing cigars. You can also find their most current print catalog by going to their homepage and clicking on it on the lower right corner of the page. When they were selling-out of all their SD Dupont cigars, they were only $1 each, and they often have really great buys like this. . . and along with their great shipping price, I highly recommend them. Send your soldier a box today!

Update. . . . .. . I received a nice email from someone about which cigar to choose, and I wanted to post some of my response here.

Unless you know exactly what the person you're buying for likes, then you're just going to have to guess. First and foremost. . . . DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT! Believe me, I'm sure that whatever you send is going to be GREATLY appreciated. There are all kinds of things that come into play with cigars. . . filler tobacco. . . binder tobacco. . . the tobacco leaf wrapper. . . and each of these may come from a different country, or all for the same country. There is the ring-size (thickness) and the length. The different cigar companies call different sizes by different names. The standard name "churchill" might be called the "El Grande de la Noche" by another company. Again. . . .DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT! I tend to say . . . all things considered.. . if the price is the same. . . send a larger cigar rather than a smaller one, simply because they smoke longer, and to be honest, most of the guys I have sent to would not know a "Robusto" from a hole in the ground (a little cigar humor) and are happy to receive anything.

The #1 thing that will decide what you send is how much money you have to spend. The #2 thing will be how many cigars are you trying to buy with that amount of money. If you're looking for just a few really nice cigars to send to someone, then you really can't go wrong by clicking HERE and purchasing a 5-pack of cigars from JR's. All of the brands listed are fine. Some of the more well-known ones are: H. Upmann, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Bolivar and Astral is nice and has a lower price. But again, any of these are great. They are in all different price ranges.

If you would like a nice cigar that is not going to cost an arm-and-a-leg, but is handmade, I would recommend La Finca. They are made in Nicaragua. They do not come in 5-packs though, and only boxes. Here is another option though. . . and I didn't mention this when I originally posted, but I'm going to now. . . There is another website I like as well, and it's www.tampasweetheart.com This company is owned by the Fuenta family, which is a VERY famous cigar family. ANY of the Fuente cigars are good. JR Cigars has a few of them, but only in boxes and not 5-packs. Fuente makes what I believe to be the best cigar outside of Cuba and it's called the Opus X. It's VERY rare and you won't find them unless you know someone or are willing to pay a lot of money for them online. They retail for around $12 each, but if you try to find them online they will go for MUCH more than that. You also have to be careful because there are fakes as well. I just tell you about the XO, because it's kind of like the "ultimate" and I'm always searching for them. Sometimes I find them. . or friends will find them. If you can ever find them in a regular cigar shop, they will usually only allow you to purchase 1 or at the most 2. Even then, you have to know to ask because they always hide them. But anyway, Tampa Sweetheart has what I would call their "apprentice" cigars. These are their "Tampa Sweethearts". These are rolled by apprentices, and are sold in bundles and not "fancy" boxes. I have gotten these a few times and REALLY have been happy with them. You should be able to see them by clicking HERE. If the link does not work just go to their website and on the left, close to the bottom, you will see Tampa Sweethearts. They do not ship to APO/FPO and only use UPS so you have to reship. But still, I like them.

As if all of this wasn't enough. . . . One last thing. . . . And this is just an idea, and certainly not any sort of requirement. If you do happen to place an order through JR Cigars, and you're ordering a box. . . you might want to add a Drymistat Tube. This is a great, inexpensive humidification device that will turn a cigar box into somewhat of a humidor cheap and easy. The guys can use regular water in it. If they go out for a few days, they can stick a few cigars in a zip-loc bag and put the tube in there as well. They also have a punch which is cheap and nice. Again, neither really necessary, but just nice to have.

Sending Cigars

Hey everybody,

We have been sending packages through any solider since 05/07. We found it to be the most efficient means of finding people and hustling cigars, jerky, snacks, etc. than any other effort out there. The cigars are a big hit. I usually stop at the Thompson cigar outlet here in Tampa and send a nice selection of tins and larger sticks in each box.

Does anyone have some advice on ensuring the packages get to the recipient? I don't want to pester the soldier, sailor, airman or marine as my preferred follow up correspondence has been additional packages. That said we have only sent one package to 6 individuals as we weren't sure they got their first packages at all.

Any guidance is welcome.

My husbands cousin just arrived in Iraq for his second tour. I mailed him his first box today and put 2cans of chewing tobacco in it, and listed it on the export paperwork. I havent sent my anysoldier contact tobacco products, they need hygiene items so badly due to a understocked PX that Ive never considered it, and can you image smoking a cigar that has been in the box with deodorant for two weeks? Anyway the mail clerk got out this book and looked up the APO zip code to see if it is prohibited. I didnt know that tobacco is restricted in some areas. Luckily his isnt and I didnt need to open the box and remove it. Has anyone else experienced this?

My goodness, give our boys a break!! It may be bad for their health but there is worse things like... umm..

The beginning.

Your warriors over in either sandbox need down time. Being that one of the best ways to decpmpress and relax is a cold beer, the NEXT best thing in hell is a cigar.

These are great for everyone (known to cure illness……….ok maybe not) but they are great for warriors to smoke at the end of the day, or special occasion while deployed.

WHO-

Everyone smoke cigars. Especially my 90 yr old grand mother. If they don’t smoke stoags, they probably dip and then you can just substitute dip for cigar through all this.

WHAT

Cigars come ia all sorts of flavors and strengths. A Maduro will kick your butt if you are not use to smoking them. A mediaum or lighter colored cigar is better for the 9 yr olds out there starting to smoke cigars J Kidding.

WHEN

Cigars are great for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

WHERE

You can get cigars from numerous places. Some will ship direcly to the warrior in the sand box with a special msg from you. (www.cigar international.com does this.

Otherwise you can go into your local cigar shop, tell the meat behind the counter what your doing and get a discount if he is a descent guy. Then put them in a zip lock back and ship away in a strong box.

WHY

C’mon haven’t you been listening?

I Need Cigar 101!

Hello all!

I'm stepping into foreign territory here. I know absolutely nothing about cigars except that they're brown, you smoke 'em, and the troops like 'em! So, my friend's birthday is coming up, he's a Marine Infantry Officer deployed to Iraq, and I want to send cigars for his platoon, roughly 50 guys, for the "celebration" (if you can call it that). So my questions are as follows:

What is a good cigar that most guys will like? I don't want to send something gross but I can't really spend hundreds of $ on this either. I've seen people posting things about samplers; maybe that's a good idea...??

Apparently size matters when it comes to cigars??

What is a humidor?? I'm guessing something to keep them in good condition until they get smoked? And do I need to send one if this is a one-time thing??

Any other basic info I should know?? (I read that most don't like flavored ones, that was good advice- thank you!)

RE:J&R RUGGED HUMIDORS just in time for Christmas gifts

I stopped into my local J&R tobacco store today and found a line of really rugged humidors. There are 3 in the line made by a company called Madelaine. They are called X-treme Humidor.

One is sized and priced for a unit present - 39.95 - has 3 trays - each tray holds if I recall correctly six regular or 12 short cigars. The middle model is 18.98 and holds 15 or 30 and the small one is 13.95 and holds 5 or 10.

All are vacuum sealed, black plastic, lockable, rugged - you can 'run over them with your car and not hurt them' - didn;t ask about a tank and available in the store. Don't know about the web site.

Really cool gift - and of course then you'd have to fill them up with cigars! The small one is a travel humidor, has a loop handle and would probably fit in a cargo pocket.

Forgot to mention - They also would easily fit in the 12 x 12 cube the big one or the FRB1 (shoebox) the middle one (I think - it's 9x5x4.50). Big one is 10x8x5.
