Patterns are available at their website. You must use 100% wool yarn because it is flame retardent (and doesn't melt into wounds if it does burn) and warm even when wet. I use Paton's classic merino wool which is usually $4.99 a skein at Michael's. This week they have it on sale for 2/$5. I'm not sure I've seen it this low before. I'm gonna stock up. I've already sent for this year, but will start in on next year's batch soon. So much yarn, so little time.

A sailor has posted here today and he is aboard the USS Nimitz, he stated that their deployment has been extended for 2 months, I also belong to Navy for Moms and for obvious reasons this was posted a few months ago. They are trying to get Christmas gift to every sailor onboard the entire carrier group. This is for over 4000 sailors. Not sure if anyone wants to join in on the Christmas surprise. Just small things to let everyone on the carrier group know that they are being thought of, like lip balm, hot cocoa, christmas candy. I will ask if I can release the mailing address. But if anyone wants it please send me a private request. Maybe there is a better way to do it? Or maybe there are already enough warriors to help? I dont have a deployed sailor, so this is not for my daughter. Thank you to all.

Operation Baking Gals

In my latest Taste of Home magazine, there was an article about an organization called Baking GALS (Give a Little Support). Begun by a woman named Susan Whetzel when her cousin was deployed to Iraq, there are now 1000 registered users on the site who bake for the troops.

It's been a long time since I have been here on this site. My how things have changed! and for the better. I found a really neat site called PurpledogTag.com. I ordered my tags last month and received them and I was really surprised at how many people recognize them and what they stand for. They are purple tags with a hole in them that represent our past present and future wounded that have served, and our support for them. The other neat thing is 90% of the proceeds go to our wounded for their healthcare and other things necessary to help them.

Just wanted to share.

About the automated address request system: you can't request more addresses until you've finished with the addresses you've already requested, but you can indicate "0" for number of books shipped if you find after requesting, that you can't ship to them after all, in order to clear out your current address list. The address list you get does have an expiration (I think it's 2 weeks), so if someone just requests addresses and then never does anything with them, those addresses will get recycled to someone else. I got a little frustrated when I requested 2 addresses and checked off 2 genres, intending to get one address for each genre; instead it gave me 2 addresses for one of the genres, and none for the other. Not having enough of that genre for 2 people, on the "report a shipment" page, I filled in "0" for one of the people & the number I sent to the other, and then requested one address for the ot her genre I had. So now I either request them one genre at a time or just contact the friendly ladies who devote so much of their time (& money) to this endeavor.

They do ask you to put a "operationpaperback" sticker on or in each book, but once you buy a package of the stickers at the store (they tell you what kind to get) & download the formatted text from the site, it's really no big deal. I just print out 3 or 4 sheets at a time so I don't have to do it every time I'm about to ship. They also provide a standard letter you can download & print out to include in each shipment if you don't want to (or just don't have the time to) include a personal note. I find I'm much more likely to get a personal response from the troops by including a personal note with my own email address.

They don't have the long entries and pics from the troops that you can browse and search on anysoldier, but they do post thank-yous they get from the troops.

I have strayed...

I admit, I do use AdoptAUSSoldier.org.

Straying permanently.. :)

Yeah, I was with an other organization, they weren't well run, even though it was started by 2 veterans and a few supporters, the site has NO advertising and nothing to make you come to the site, there's like no soldiers on there that are able to be helped and they don't really have it all together there.

A SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight;
The sparkling lights in the tree, I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem.
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
But I opened my eye when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood; his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

“What are you doing?” I asked without fear
“Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts,
To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light
Then he sighed and he said, “It’s really all right,
I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night”

“It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ‘Pearl on a day in December,”
Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.”
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘Nam
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red white and blue… an American flag.

“I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home,
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat,
I can carry the weight of killing another
Or lay down my life with my sisters and brothers
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To insure for all time that this flag will not fall.”

“So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright
Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”
“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
“Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,
For being away from your wife and your son.”

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
“Just tell us you love us, and never forget
To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone;
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust.
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.”

At the site, you can also print out a kit to contribute your story if you'd like to, if you are a Veteran. Civilians can contribute in the name of deceased Veterans in their families I think too - not sure about that one.

It's an extremely interesting site that pays tribute to all the Veterans of all the wars our country has fought since WWI.

Well worth a look in tribute to our heroes this Veterans Day!
