Hello Junkies especially you Quilters.

The Quilting Bee is once again springing back to life. I received a box of quilting materials from Natascha (FIFQB queen bee). Natascha brought the Q Bee to life and I intend to breathe life back into it and carry on as best I can. She will be a hard one to fill shoes of, or in this case, expertise at getting those quilts made up and sent off to their recipients.

At this point give me time to look at what she sent, and see what quilts I need to finish off, etc. before we get rolling again. She did send a kitty of $57 to work with.

2009 Card Swaps with added 2010 swaps.

Here's the list of 2009 swaps with the 2010 swaps added. The 2010 dates are only a guideline. Hostesses can make changes to the one they pick. I added Thanksgiving #20 to the list. (I have made changes as of August 22nd.) The underlined ones still need Hostesses. Check out the dates on the 2010 calendar to figure out your due date.

You ideally want to get the cards into your hands from all the swappers at least a month and a half before the "Holiday" that you want them to get sent back out to the troops by. Set your due date knowing that there might be swappers that will send them late to you.

You may want to move your dates by a week or more to accommodate your life and style.

Always ask for return postage from all the swappers. The going rate right now for a regular flat rate stamp is $4.95. This might change after Mother's Day 2010. There are Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Boxes and Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelopes on USPS.com that you can order in packs of 10 or 25 that are delivered to your mailbox.

Ask questions. There is a full detailed list on how to do a swap somewhere in these threads that can be found and posted on here also. If you want to host(ess) a swap, ask questions, there are those of us who will answer. Ask all the previous Hostesses - did you have fun or what?! I enjoyed my experience.

I have not hosted one before but would be glad to try Valentine's Day. I participated in that one last year and I think the cards were needed right after the holidays. All right guys - here at last is the official posting of the list of participants and the rules. I am opening up 25 slots plus myself as #26. That way, hopefully, you will get back 25 cards from someone else and not any of your own cards back .

1. Minimum of 25 cards please. Homemade or store bought - either are welcome. ( If you wish to do more that 25 you may - I will use them to fill in for extras if we lack 25 participants or else send the extras in my own boxes to the troops.) Halloween, General Fall, and Thanksgiving themed cards are encouraged to be submitted. Please address them in general terms to any hero or any service member so they may be sent to any branch of the service. Leave envelopes unsealed please. This is so that the other swappers can see and enjoy the cards and also so that swappers can forward them to an appropriate contact that will appreciate them the most.

2. Remember not to put any strong political or religious statements in your cards so as not to offend. Do say Thank You or express your gratitude to the troops.

3. Enclose either $4.95 in postage stamps (prefered) or cash to cover the return postage to you - this is how you will get the swapped cards returned to you. You may also include a self addressed shipping label if you wish.

4. Email or private message me to confirm that you want to be put on the list. I will email back my shipping address and contact information to you. Please give me a way to contact you as well (i.e. your email address) so that I can keep you up to date in case there are any snafu's or issues.

5. Be mindful of the due date of September 25. Be sure to mail them a few days before that in order that they arrive on time to me. I will be sending cards back out on Tuesday the 29th via priority mail envelopes so you should receive them within the first couple of days of October.

6. Please keep any enclosures in your cards as flat as possible. I would like to discourage candy in the cards as well other than something flat like a stick of gum. I need to mail these in the flat rate envelopes and there is only so much that will fit in those!

Red Cross and sending of Holiday Cards

Red Cross to Distribute Holiday Cards

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 23, 2009 - The American Red Cross again will sponsor a national "Holiday Mail for Heroes" campaign to receive and distribute holiday cards to servicemembers, veterans and their families in the United States and abroad.

The card campaign includes those working and receiving care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here.

A special P.O. Box address will be published the first week of November online at http://www.redcross.org/holidaymail.

In the meantime, people shouldn't send cards to Walter Reed unless they are addressed to a specific wounded warrior.

Due to security restrictions, Walter Reed cannot accept generic mail addressed to "A Recovering Soldier" or "Any Soldier." In past years, hundreds of cards were returned to senders because of generic addresses, many sent in response to misleading e-mails.

The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. will partner for the third year to provide screening of all mail sent to the special P.O. Box address. Cards postmarked no later than Dec. 7 will reach servicemembers recovering at Walter Reed.

I am think to buy a mitsubshi Diamante of 92/93 or a Honda inspire 92...what ever. Is not great cars but who dont have money for buy a new see this options. Imagine that has this options and in hot spot for escape what car you use? lol

I think that Lisa had said that she had set up folders for each swapper. I am thinking maybe hanging folders. She did 50 though, so maybe not. That information is on here somewhere.

Someone asked for this, so here it is. Not that I have been a hostess, just helping with the process.

Hi Junkies! Y'all have been fantastic about letting me know when you see contacts requesting cards.... Cardsforheroes.org has sent out boxes to well over 300 heroes so far, and we always have more cards coming in!

If you see a name requesting cards, leave their name here and we and others can request their addies. :)

(FYI We typically do a search for "cards", which brings up playing as well as phone cards too...a long list! Then we go through who we've already sent to, etc, and it's quite the process. So having your eyes on the profiles and letting us know when you see blank card requests helps lots!)

If we get lucky and end up with a bunch more we can still stick with 20 and then just each person will be mailed 20 back and not everyone will get all of them, make sense?

Basically, anything patriotic to go along with the 4th of July would be great. Remember these will be going to different branches of the military so keep that in mind when you address the envelope or write in your card. Leave the cards unsealed when you send them too. I liked Heidi's idea of sending them back in the small flat rate boxes to you guys so if you could send $5 with it for shipping that would be great. If we can keep the cards 5x7 or smaller too that would be great, thanks!

Don't know if this is the right place to put this......but I was at AC Moore yesterday and came across Christmas color yarn (you know the multi-colored one.....red, green and white) as well as the sparkle green and sparkle red. The reason I mentioned this is I know of crafters that might want to get a jump start on Christmas things. I was happy to see the yarn I need and can get started on the little stockings again. The clerk asked what I was making and I told her stocking for the soldiers. Then I proceeded to talk about AnySoldier and she commented that her mom is a member (small world)....then she gave me the employee discount off all my craft stuff. NICE.......never hurts to chat a bit and get a discount Silly me....never asked who her mom is......

Anyway....just FYI for anyone thinking ahead a few months like me

I believe that Card Swap 9 is next up. It is the Summertime Fun Swap. I am setting the due date as May 1, which is a Friday. I am off work on Fridays, and that will give me the weekend to get the parcels together and sent out the following Monday. I have two people confirmed for this swap, so now is the time to send to me your name and email and snail mail address if you are interested in participating. I am hoping for at least 20 swappers. Milk Mission for our troops

Before any of you get concerned about the contents of this post, Marty OK'd it.

Kim is a new friend of mine that I've gotten to know through purchasing "Remembering Their Sacrifices" shirts for my hubby and me from her website. I found her website through the Dear American Hero cards (DearAmericanHero.com) that I got for free to send to our troops.

She sent me a photo that shows a very happy soldier (her hubby) holding up the fresh bags of milk that made it over to Iraq. It's a good mission to support if you can help, I know she would appreciate it.

All we have left to pay for to make this happen, is the shipping costs!!!!!!!! which is the largest part of this mission.

We are asking as little as a $1 donation from many citizens, to make this happen!
to where a soldier can have a few glasses of fresh cold milk, just in time for the holidays.

It's 5 degrees outside, if the wind doesn't blow. A layer of Styrofoam crunchy snow covers the garden and paths.....destruction from the ice storm lies obvious across the yard and woods........thoughts of Spring are probably the farthest thing from minds right now. But.......

a tickler for those looking ahead and keeping our soldiers in our hearts ...

Swap Number 8. A Happy Easter Happy Spring Card swap . I have 9 names right now. It would be SUPER if we could shoot for 20. I don't want everyone to get "carded-out" but after the rush of the Holidays its the smaller Holidays that can really make an impact in showing the troops they are in our thoughts.

Can we do it???

With all due respect to any religious or spiritual preferences, please focus your cards' emphasis on Spring and light and warmth, bunnies and hippity hop and such...... perhaps we can share ideas and suggestions in this thread.

If you can get your cards to me by March 10th, I will aim at sending out your "bunch" by March 12th. Easter is April 12th so hopefully this will give us enough turn around time.

Please email me with you interest to join in this swap (pretty please?) and include your address so I can start working on return address labels.

Several of you know my whining and frustrations with not being able to "do" the high end needs of many soldiers requests. (I thank those who have guided and supported me through this frustration. ) I will not be asking for postage for this swap....I'm considering it a "package" cost and my contribution. Thank you for letting me do this.

At Christmastime, y'all know we sent out over 35,000 blank cards. In each of the boxes I put in HUGE ziplocs filled with mail from home (marked HERO MAIL on the outside)----letters and cards from all across the US......Including swap cards! Yours got sprinkled throughout all the boxes. And I just got the sweetest note from Chaplain Nielsen about what he does with his, how cool!!

Thank you for the cards! I make sure that the soldiers give their families letters often. You work makes it easier. They find it hard to say no when I give them a card to write on.

The Hero Mail* is great. I go out and pray wih the soldiers before missions and I hand out Hero Mail. Helps to know that we are remembered and a letter from home is always refreshing.

Ideas for Soldier Easter Egg Hunt

One of my Soldiers was telling me last night his unit's morale is 'in the toilet' and he and I were trying to come up with ideas to cheer them up. We decided on an Easter egg hunt. To make things more interesting and to lengthen the time spent with the hunt, amongst the plastic eggs with little candies in them, I want to send plastic eggs with notes saying the person finding that egg won a prize. There are a LOT of people in his unit, I am thinking 600 plastic eggs with maybe 20 of them notes that they won a prize. Then after all the eggs are found, they can pick their prize from wrapped items so they won't know what they are getting til they unwrap it.

Please help me come up with ideas for prizes that won't empty my bank account - either buying them or mailing them! They can be practical or funny or edible or drinkable or whatever you can think of that is not too big to mail and costs no more than $10 each item - the less expensive, the better! I might spring for an iPod nano as the grand prize and a new DVD or two but mostly I want stuff the guys will like but that won't put me in the poor house!

Thanks for any ideas you come up with. Anybody wanting to do the same thing for their contact, feel free to borrow off this post.

I have had several emails regarding the Valentine Card Swap #6 saying they can't do 25 cards, how could we do a separate swap for just 10 cards. Sooooo here tis!

IF YOU want to swap just 10 Valentines for your contacts... here's what to do!

Step 1: Send your name and address to avenewsanna@yahoo.com

Step 2: Get working on your cards. Handmade is fine. Postcards are fine. The little kid-school pack Valentines are fine!

REMEMBER: It is the thought that counts! The contacts and their units love to know we took the time... especially this one that crosses over the winter holidays... we took the time to think of them! YEAH AS JUNKIES!

STEP 3 - mail the cards to me with a self-addressed label and the required postage.

Step 4 -- "The Ladies of the Bay" Red Hatters will gather with me on Friday Jan 16, swap out the cards and repackage them back to you with your label and your postage.

Step 5 -- receive your "swap" and mail to your contacts! YEAH!

Question for Cardswappers and scrapbookers

Hi guys

I want to get one of those Cricut machines, but I don't know if the little one-more compact and less expensive- would be ok. I mean, I would be using it for cards and scrapbooking, not for big stuff like posters. I saw some at walmart before christmas, and they were the 3-400 dollar ones, and I wasn't going to ask for that! But on a shelf there was a "compact" one, and I think it was less than $200. My question is, is the compact one as good as the bigger one for cards and such? Don't really know about them, so I thought I would ask you.
