My Dear brothers and sisters in uniform. Today is a very sad occasion for all that were involved in the Ft. Hood incident. My

first duty station during Vietnam was Ft. Hood where I served as a solider and entertain troops at night as a musician for a

post band. Do know that words cannot express the sincere regret for the loss of our fallen soldiers. My prayers will always

be with you all. And, also know that there is no greater calling than to serve in defense of freedom and liberty for all of God's

people. May the peace of God that passes all understanding be with you all now and for ever more. Through His Grace,

They have finally recoverd and identified remains of Michael Scott Speicher. He was the first American lost in the Gulf War.

I remember when it happened, I was living in Jacksonville then, and it was all over the news and papers. We all went to prayer vigils and things like that. At least now the family knows and they can bring him home.

FYI -

The Empire State building has donned red, white and blue lighting tonight.

And a Beam of Light again shines into the sky this year from ground zero tonight in lower Manhattan in memory of those who lost there lives eight years ago.

It can be seen from across the river in spite of the clouds and the multiplicity of lights.

So rest easy all - you have not been forgotten, nor have your families and friends all over this country of ours.

Nor have all those who continue to sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy - you remain always in our hearts and prayers.

MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIES

A Mom sits at home, quiet and sad

She fingers a shirt her son wore.

She remembers his voice and thinks of his kisses

Before he went off to war.

A Dad reminisces about the good times

That he and his son always shared.

Tears track silently down his cheeks

He hopes his son knew how he cared.

A Wife slowly rocks her infant son

Whose father, he’ll never meet

While her three year old toddler asks, "Where’s Daddy?"

As she plays at her mother’s feet.

A Comrade in arms glances ‘round the tent

And spies an empty rack

He knows his best buddy in the whole world

Is never coming back.

For some Memorial Day is just words

It’s a day to picnic and sleep

For others the loss is so profound

Their memories and dreams run deep.

I wrote this poem last year and sent it out to my contacts. Thought that I would share it here if anyone wishes to send it to their own contacts this year.

This is dedicated to every American serviceman and woman who has bravely served our country with honor. On this day, we thank you and we salute you, heroes all.

MEMORIAL DAY

They don’t ask for much, these guardians of peace

As they quietly give it their all

They struggle to fight and they struggle to win

While watching their comrades fall.

A helmet stands silently up on a gun

A pair of boots sits below

There are dog tags, which hang forlorn and sad

As a flag waves to and fro.

And when tears wet their cheeks, they bow their heads

That none will witness their pain

They say goodbye to a brother in arms

And escort him off to the plane.

They serve with honor these brave young souls

They take pride in all that they do

They shoulder the burden of our defense

To our country they’re forever true.

So on this day, we remember them,

With gratitude in our hearts

Those still here and those that are gone

For each has done his part.

Sargent John M Penich was killed in afghan.on october 16,2008, He was killed when a morter was sent to the safe house he was in with his fellow solders. My son was a true hero, five weeks before he was taken from us he took over control of a battle that was going bad, he was given a silver star for that battle. before that he received a bronze star and a bronze star with valor. John made sargent after only one and ahalf year in the army. he was given solder of the year award and many other awards. I cannot express how proud of john i am. He told me, two days before his death, that he was going to get out and go to school, finish his degree and go back in the army and become something great someday. I have no doubt he would have done just that. I miss him everyday, we were very close and my world has changed forever. God blessed me when john was born. I know i will see him again someday soon, until then i will help support our men and women who keep us safe. with gods love, Kathy Penich-Garross

We As members have a great love for Bob and Rick as well, may he and his loved ones find peach in knowing how much of a impact this has made to our AS family. Through our talks with our beloved Bob and Rick!!

I keep encouraging Bob to keep in contact with us on AS, and he has Promised to do so!!

Here is “Taps” played in its entirety.

The Original version of ‘Taps’ was called ‘Last Post’, and was written by Daniel Butterfield in 1801.

It was rather lengthy and formal, as you will hear in this clip, so in 1862 it was shortened to 24 notes and re-named ‘Taps’.

Melissa Venema is playing it on a trumpet whereby the original was played on a bugle.

This young soldier died in Iraq on January 22, 2009. He was deployed on December 26th, 2008 and married at a small ceremony at his home a few days before.

On the news page, Marty has posted information on the passing of a son of a long-time Any Soldier Supporter, Kim Tyrone, Her son, SPC Leland Calloway (Cal) Tyrone, age 23, was killed at Fort Carson on Saturday, December 20, 2008. He wasn't a contact with Any Soldier^®. Much more information is on the news page and there is a site to post memorial messages. I'm sure that all AS supporters join me in expressing our deepest sympathy to Kim and her family in this most difficult of times.

DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Capt. Robert J. Yllescas, 31, of Lincoln, Neb., died Dec. 1 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., of wounds suffered Oct. 28 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit at Combat Outpost Keating, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

He has been mentioned on both the KOP and the 6/4 threads. If you have not read his story, I suggest going to his wife's blog. She kept a very candid, almost daily record of his struggle after he was wounded, and reading it will leave an amazing impression on you about who he was and the courage his wife and family have shown.
