    Sending food items and non-food items together in a box?

    This is a completely silly question, but I have to ask.. in the FAQ it says to not do it. And I totally get not sending soaps or deodorants or other similar type items in with food items.. but what about things like ink pens, and mechanical pencils, stationary, magazines, and books? Those things are ok to pack with food and vice versa, right? Or should I really just *not* mix them at all?

    Thx,

    //Mary (nissus)

    Yes, you can send them with food. I try to stick in a pen, small notepad, and envelopes in every package (usually in a ziplock), and often throw in a few magazines as well.

    Mary,

    That would apply to any scented toiletries, detergents, and either new or washed clothing, but wouldn't matter about toothbrushes, plastic cutlery, paper plates/napkins, etc. that you are absolutely sure that is unscented.  You have to be alert, though, as some unsuspecting things now are scented, or even just naturally strong smelling, thus the warning.

    Another thing to be aware of is that some foods have a strong smell and can influence other foods in the box.  I have noticed it with some microwave popcorn and chewing gums.  I borrow a food vaccuum sealer from a friend and seal all the deoderant and soap products as well as "smelly" foods.  Once sealed the odors are contained and I can ship everything in one box.
