Junkies -- please check out Tammy M. Dunham's post of 5/30/08 -- for those who helped with movie nights in the Phillippines with Chief Puelo and SGT Steve Nevels (Steve-O on the Forum) -- Tammy continues the tradition!!!
And WOW -- it just keeps growing -- they're up to 100 kids! And 30 bags of popcorn at a pop (sorry, couldn't resist the pun Just take a look at that photo -- looks like the kids are having a great time
I've got a large FRB of candy on its way -- a box of popcorn to go out today! Can anyone else help?
Thanks, Junkies!
--Marilyn

I'll be going to Walmart next week - does any one know how Gummie Bears hold up in the heat and rain? What's the weather like in the Philippines this time of year? Never can remember which side of the line it is on either - DUH time here! Or CRS? Help! What kind of candy is best for holding up under their weather conditions - hard candy,, Gummies, chocolate?
Thanks for pointing this one out Marilyn.

The weather here in the Philippines is hot and humid, and it rains almost every day. The most important thing for the candy is for it to be individually wrapped. The kids from what I have seen love lollipops and the little individual packs of twizzlers. Now that being said, they are like ANY kid in that they won't refuse any type candy offered to them:), so whatever is cheapest, on sale, etc, would be great as long as it is individually wrapped. Thanks so much for supporting movie night. It has grown almost 50% just from when I started helping a few weeks ago. Movie night supports the 'hearts and minds' mission as well.
Thanks,
Tammy

Ann,
This is my link to the time and weather in Manila (which was as close as I could find). Steve said that where he was there was a little breeze coming off the sea and it wasn't as oppressively humid as it was inland. The problem there is rain, rain, rain. The one time I said, "no, don't send that" about something Steve laughed and said it'd be fine. You could send a mix of things and see how it goes?

I just requested the address... I've got a Costco-size case of microwave popcorn that has been waiting a few weeks for the right call to come! Yay!

Thanks so much everyone for the popcorn and candy!! Movie night has grown so much in the last month! We had between 130-140 last night! We are looking at how to make it better-from seating to passing out popcorn, etc. We can't do it without you!! I'll post an update this week with pictures from Sunday night.

I posted an update (with pictures) from Sunday night. I know is a little off topic of movie night, but if anyone has room in their candy/popcorn boxes and has some extra chicken noodle soup in your cupboards, can you send that as well please? We like to give chicken noodle soup to the ones that come in with stomach viruses/diarrhea, and we are down to our last couple of cans.
Thanks so much.

They had large cans of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup at the 99 cent store. I can't remember if they are ready to eat or the add water type.

I talked to Steve a couple of days before he left & he said all I had to do was use the address I already have but sub with Tammy's. Hi, Tammy, nice to meet you! I've already got a popcorn popper here ready to go..been holding off sending it cos Steve had said you guys had a gazillion microwave ones still. Hopefully, with the popper, it will save time than the mic ones. I've got bags of corn, flavored salt & butter/oil, too. Don't really know if you use the latter, I think I mentioned it..and he either didn't hear or ignored it. In any case, it's going in the box, unless you tell me otherwise.
I've only been to the southern part of the Phils when I was a little girl (Sabitan Island) & I don't even really remember it (apart from vague images of tossing starfish, poking some jellyfish stranded on land & digging for sea slugs-yuck), my uncle has property there that, according to my mom, he's not even visited in ages. I'd lived in the middle part (Cebu), far from the "jungle" humidity. Last time I was there (2006), it was wilting-melting humid..I brought some chocolate with me that survived, soft but intact. I don't know how it'd survive in a box, though, as opposed to being in a carry-on. Whenever I'd come over to visit Batasan Island (another uncle has property there), I just bring bags of variety candies/chocs/treat bags with me & never had any problems..the kids loved everything (even the sour stuff!!). Good luck, Tammy!
take care,
Steff
PS. I've got brown paper bags here, too, in lieu of popcorn bags..and some I've gotten from ebay that are popcorn bags.

It is absolutely gorgeous in the Philippines. The weather reminds me of the very hot part of summer at home, except here it is every day and not just a couple days at a time. Not a day goes by without my tshirt being drenched in sweat. (But it is not near as hot as Iraq-that is some intense heat!)
The air popper will help time wise and volume wise. We are going to start putting the popcorn in individual bags and handing it out as they come in, and we will use whatever is sent-air popped and/or microwave. There are just too many kids to do it the way we have been. It will take a little longer to get ready, but I think it will make the night go more smoothly.
I appreciate everyone's time and support.

Thank you very much for the outpouring of support!! Our candy supply had about 3 weeks left, but is much better now, as well as for popcorn. I have either mailed or emailed everyone that sent boxes, but a few of the emails were returned as undeliverable. Also, one box I thought I had an address or email, but found out after the box was burned that I didn't. So if you don't hear back from me, I apologize. You all have your sincere appreciation and thanks for helping us with this mission. We couldn't do it without you!!
We are averaging over a 100 kids every week, despite the rainy season and school starting. I sent an update with pictures, but it hasn't posted yet.
Thanks again so much for your support!!
