Never take for granted their safety. My son Jason Bogar was one of the nine killed Sunday. Even though one tries to prepare for what could happen, the grief of knowing you will never see your 25 year old son gain is almost overwhelming. I trust that his death was of value for our country, for the world and especially for the results that will take place in the lives of those of us at a spiritual level as we are challenged to trust God in a world of elementary soul-making.

Michael,
My son is with the 173rd and is still in the Korengal. Nothing I can say would sound right or be enough. So simply, our family will never forget the gift of freedom your son has given us and the hero he is. May you know that though we are not with you in person we are surrounding you with caring, love and prayers.

Michael,
There are not enough words of comfort that we can give. Your family and all the other families that have lost their sons are in my prayers.

Re: Korengal Valley, Afghanistan - July 2008 edition
Michael, my thoughts are with you. When my friend Matt Blaskowski was killed in Afghanistan in Sept of 2007, the world turned upside down and time stood still. I really struggled with his death. One thing that has comforted me is an email that Matt sent me a few weeks before he was killed. He and his paratroopers were living under very difficult conditions on Firebase Vegas. Matt walked from Vegas over to the Korengal Outpost. When he arrived, one of my care packages was waiting for him. He sent me an email to thank me for remembering him. In his email, Matt said,"I love my job." He and his paratroopers were living in the wilderness in the Korengal Valley with no amenities and with danger on all sides, and he said, "I love my job." He went on to say that when he was on Firebase Vegas, he always felt so blessed because he was surrounded by such extraordinary young paratroopers. Towards the end of the email, he said, "I'm so proud to be a member of the best airborne brigade in the world." I'm sure Jason felt the same way. With Matt, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tell him how much his friendship meant to me and how much I respected him.I told him to ignore the rock stars, actors, actresses, the professional athletes, and the media creations. I told him that the Sky Soldiers up there in the Korengal Valley are America's real national treasure. I believed that last summer, and Michael, I believe that today. Jason and his brothers are our real national treasure. We won't ever forget them. Please try to focus on all of the good memories.Try to recall all of the good things that you did for him. Recall the beautiful boy he was and the good man he became. May God hold you and Jason in the Light of His Love.

Thank you for one of the most helpful and comforting email, perhaps the most helpful and comforting so far. And for all of those who have written, thank you. I have a lot of love and support around me, but very few who understand as you do, and have stated it so beautifully. Jason felt the same way. I begged him to not return for a third tour. It was his blissful call; he was a compassionate warrior. He loved the children and protected the weak and those in bondage. He died knowing where he was, why he was there and ready to pay any price.

Thank you for lifting my spirits by your wonderful email.

Michael, I won't say that I know how you are feeling because I have not lost a child. I think I would feel like the world stopped spinning, the sun won't shine again, and a feeling of loss so great that I don't know if I would recover. I can only say that you raised a great man, an American hero, a role model for other young men. I want you to know that there are many grateful people that your son was strong and brave and stepped forward to protect our country and all that it stands for. I am sending you warm hugs and prayers for you and your family that you will forever remember your son with pride and honor and cherish all the memories that you have of him growing up and becoming the wonderful person that he was. My warmest regards, Vicki
