    Books by Soldiers, about Soldiers

    Hi everyone Smile

I love to read, so I wanted to pass along the titles of a few books that I think would be of interest to my fellow AnySoldier Junkies. I got most of these at my local library. There are many more out there, so if anyone else has some suggestions about which ones you've read, post them here!

    *****

Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families
    Edited by Andrew Carroll
This is a GREAT compilation of essays, fiction, poetry, and letters. There's also a PBS documentary about the project, featuring a few of the authors. Here's a website that tells how the project came to be:
    http://www.nea.gov/national/homecoming/anthology.html

The Heart of a Soldier: A True Love Story of Love, War, and Sacrifice
    by Capt. Kate Blaise
Blaise and her husband were with the first wave of soldiers entering Iraq when OIF started, she as a logistics officer, he as a helicopter pilot. A great look at being a female in a war zone, as well as the toll a war can take on a family.

Just Another Soldier: A Year on the Ground in Iraq
    by Jason Christopher Hartley
This book came from Hartley's blog of the same name. Just a warning: If you don't like a lot of swearing and rough talk, this isn't the book for you. If you don't mind it, you'll get a very unique perspective from an infantry soldier, often sad and disturbing, but also quite humorous at times.

One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer
    by Nathaniel Fick
I just started this one, so I can't give any sort of synopsis yet.

    Jenifer -

THANK YOU!  Great idea.  Thank you for the titles.  Our county librairies are all hooked together so if my local lib doesn't have a book anothe lib will send it to mine.

Another thread somewhere around here discusses flag etiquette so I looked it up and found some books three of which are posted here if anyone is interested:

Our Flag, Eleanor Ayer. 48 pp. history usage and etiquette.

The Stars and Stripes. Irving Werstein.  The story of the Flag - a Golden book but useful for adults too. Section in the back on the etiquette of displaying the flag plus pictures of the versions of the devlopment of the flag.

Our Flag In Prose and Verse. Robert Haven Schauffler.  Prose and verse about the flag.

    Thanks again Jenifer.

    Ann,

Thanks for the book list.  Our children should have more education about the flag as they grow older.  We had only a very few basic rules given to us in elementary school and never any followup as we grew older.  I believe it would be great if the upper grades had an extensive lesson on flag rules maybe in a civics class if anyone still has these classes anymore.  I think around here they dropped civics classes - maybe in American History class then?

We have found 5-6 books on Amazon (bought 3 of them) on war, stress, PTSD, etc. since our grandson has a problem with it and got out in his second hitch with a medical disability due to trauma from Iraq. He seems to have too much compassion for people to be an infantryman.

Another book to read is about a town supporting the troops during World War II               " Once Upon A Town" By Bob Greene

    Hi Gran,

I think some tips on flag rules would be great.  But since most don't even say the pledge of allegiance anymore in public schools, I doubt that the subject even comes up.

I had to actually sort of take a "refresher course" myself when my old flags became worn and I had to replace them.  I could only remember not to let it touch the ground or fly it at night without proper lighting, though I think the lighting rules have changed since 9-11.

I have my old flags folded, but I still have to find out if the local VFW will take them for proper disposal.

    Take care,

    Maggie

If the VFW won't take them, check with your local fire department, I seem to recall reading somewhere that most firestations will take them.

Re: Books - The Kite Runner

Another great book, that's very relevant right now (but not by or about a soldier), is The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This one is fiction.

I read it for my Book Group about two years ago, and the story is one that has really stayed with me. It's the story of two boys growing up in Afghanistan just as the Taliban takes over. One boy comes to America, but the other stays behind. It gives a really great picture of Afghan culture.

    Hi Ann,

Thanks for the info about the flag books. I'm going to see if my library has any of them, or can get them. I'm thinking one of these would be great to do a little flag lesson for my nieces and nephews.

Wow! Thanks for the great titles, they sound like they're really great books! Unfortunately, our series of libraries only has one of the titles-- but now I have the title and can read this book. In perspective, one is certainly better than none! Thanks again!

Another book-related idea I wanted to pass along:

At my local library, as well as in some book stores, you can pick up free magazines or newspapers with reviews of new books coming out. I've been picking these up to send along in packages to my soldiers who request books. I love to read, and really enjoy reading about new books I might want to "check out" ( Wink I'm on fire tonight with the puns!) in the future.

Plus, the newspaper can be used as packing material!

I thought I'd take a moment to mention:

"Ruff's War" A Navy Nurse on the front line.

I originally heard of this book through C-Span's book review / interview and tells of the life of a nurse in the beginning of the war in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Not only is it a good read, with photos of the conditions she was living in, when you consider this woman is almost twice the age of most of her patients it can really show you the spirit of one really amazing woman.

    Just to let you know.
