Hey Laura, I have an idea you can do to help them out as well.... those cotton rounds(they come in a column looking bag at Wal-mart and Target)  that you use for makeup removal can be used for swabs for cleaning the barrels and actions...I have used them before on my firearms and they hold up really well...just tell them it's for AFTER ...
